“Romantic nice weekend - underwhelmed & not a destination place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

We really wanted to rate this place 3 stars and it has tremendous calling for some but we expected much more for the monies charged for an Orchard Cottage.

We knew this was a County Inn and the property layout is cute. There is a restaurant on the property, we enjoyed a meal there one night and the food was moderately priced & put together well. The rooms were very clean and as many previous reviews stated, you pull in, park, find your bag and show yourself to own place & it's pretty simple. The rooms were cute with "country décor and a log rustic type theme which was nice. Propane fireplace kept us warm, it was surely romantic, pet friendly and the grounds were pretty quiet. The bunnies that wander about are as big as any cotton tails I've ever seen and deer walked through the rear of the property just after sunrise.

We know Orcas Island and were very underwhelmed here and we wanted to just love it but only loved part of it. The property is located about 1/4 - half a mile away from the water with only peekaboo views at a distance. Cell phone's don't work unless you stand on a picnic table outside away from the rooms and there were no telephones in the rooms. We like to cook our own meals and are glad we brought a cooler as the refrigerator was ultra tiny, the silverware & glasses dated from the 1950's, the coffee maker 2 cup and the mattress had a foam pillow top which was uncomfortable to both my wife & I. The cottages were to have BBQ's which ours did not and after walking to find staff because there was no phone, we were told to go take the neighbors BBQ at the next cottage which we were not comfortable with yet we had no choice as we brought steaks. The TV was really-really small, the hot tub was so hot we couldn't get in (109dg+ and we own one), one of the two buttons were broken and there was a chlorine float, loaded with chlorine tablets which would have ruined our suits and again, there was no telephone to call staff or ask for assistance in any of our issues.

We are not pretentious people and feel badly writing a challenging review as our two interactions with the Owner and staff were pleasant, the grounds pleasant, the restaurant good but we expected far more for the monies charged to stay here. Had the rates been 50% off or more than the advertised rates, this would have been a 3 star review.

Room Tip: Cottages are much larger than private rooms. Cell phones don't work nor are there telephones i...

The Deer Harbor Inn thanks you for your recent visit. Just to clearfy a couple for your comments, we use bromine for a sanitizer in the tub and test it daily to be within state standards. The tubs are only capable of heating to 104 as per state standards. Also want to state that the mattress was not a foam topper but a top end memory foam mattress that other guests have said was the best they have slept on. We are sorry about the cell service but that is what it is in Deer Harbor

We really enjoyed our recent 2 night stay in lodge room 7. The room was clean and the bed was VERY comfortable. Loved everything about this place and would have given it 5 stars but for the poor Internet connectivity. The first night Internet cut in and out and the second night we couldn't connect at all
.

To be fair, there is a computer in the lobby, but I did not try it. My comments pertain only to my attempts to connect wireless from our room.

Showed up and no one was in office to check us in or answer questions. Just a gift bag with our name on it that contained a map and our room keys. We stayed in the main lodge which was basically a house with maybe 8 rooms that had locks (more like a bed & breakfast). A family was sitting in the "common area" which made it really awkward for us since they were so close to our bedroom door. Even late into the night the large family stayed in the common area (6 feet away from our door) playing games and being loud. Just a standing shower and really grubby looking hot tub outside next to the parking lot. Breakfast consisted of a hard boiled egg, an English muffin in a bag, homemade granola, and a small bottle of OJ. Milk can be had downstairs in the SHARED fridge to split between other guests. Poor WiFi and overpriced restaurant nearby. Thankfully we got it as a Groupon deal otherwise I'd be livid to have paid full price. Didn't even stay our entire weekend. Check out was leaving your keys in a bucket on your way out.

Room Tip: Stay in private lodge and not the shared lodge

Thanks for your comments and we do appreciate the feed back. In response to your suggestions, we have removed the TV in the commen area and replaced them with TVs in the guest rooms wich sould make the lodge quieter and more peaceful. Also we no longer have the milk in the commen area fridge but in the fridge in the room.
Thanks Craig Carpenter

I think the inn should not be classified as a B & B. Unless it stands for bed & basket. Very remote setting and had we not stopped in as early as we did to just check out location, it would have been very difficult to figure out where to go as there was not a soul in site to welcome us or help us find our room. Would not recommend this inn.

Just to clearify, the Deer Harbor Inn does not market ourselves as a bed and breakfast but a country inn. Sorry the guest mis- understood. During the off -season we try to be in the office as the ferries arrive but we do not have a staffed check in office. When we are not in the office we leave a gift bag with the guest mame and island information along with the room key. We feel the unique beauty of the Inn is that it is out in the country and offers peace and tranquility
Thanks You

We spent two lovely nights in the Pond Cottage. It was just like a wonderful home in the woods with two comfortable beds and two baths. Even had a craw foot tub in the master bedroom. We watched Dancing with the Stars on a large screen TV. Enjoyed our own hot tub on our deck. Full kitchen with all the amenities. A doe and her fawn came to visit twice a day. We had a delicious meal our first night in their restaurant. I'll come again with my husband this time.

Hubby and I stayed here for two nights during a 2-week road trip exploring the Pacific Northwest. I am disabled, so when I called the Resort to make reservations I requested an accessible room. The person I talked to was very friendly and helpful, explaining they didn’t have fully accessible rooms but if she put us on the first floor of The Lodge (instead of in a cabin) there would be only 3 shallow steps I’d have to negotiate. That I could do. The ferry from Anacortes only sells round-trip tickets to Orcas Island, and the fee was a bit high – over $50 for Hubby, self, and car, even with a disabled passenger discount – but the ferry ride was extremely pleasant and the island itself is absolutely gorgeous.
One of the first things I said to my husband after checking in to Deer Harbor Resort was “I guess a lot of people who visit here probably don’t ‘get’ it.” That was confirmed later in our stay by the one staff person we saw, who told us about 1/3 of the people who check in aren’t able to figure out what to do. There’s no one at the front desk; just a small bag on the counter with your name on it, filled with info, maps, and your room key. There’s no one to tell you where to go, or what to do. The Lodge is a large home that’s been converted into about 6 bedrooms on two floors with a large common area: The common area has a phone (free use, including long distance), a stocked fridge, a microwave, a computer work station with a printer, and cabinets filled with supplies like extra towels, plates, cups, etc. There are covered porches both in the front and back of the lodge with chairs and benches for sitting outside. There’s a hot tub, always ready, for Resort guests in a gazebo just behind the Lodge. And no one around to say you can use any or all these things, which you certainly can. Think of it as if a kind, generous friend went out of town leaving their key hidden just for you, and you’re welcome to make yourself at home in their house – that’s what Deer Harbor Resort is like.
Our room was cozy yet not too small. The queen-size bed was very comfy! There was an electric fireplace in the room, which added to the rustic ambience. On the mantle was a picnic basket containing English muffins and jam, granola, and fruit. (Milk and a toaster were available in the common area.) There was also a coffee maker, as well as a small fridge in the room containing orange juice and butter. One newer amenity, apparently recently added for guests who don’t know how to entertain themselves on their own, was a small-ish flat screen TV in the corner of the room. My only real complaint about our room is that the bathroom wasn’t up to ADA code – no grab bars, either by the toilet or in the tub/shower – but then again, I knew and accepted that when I made our reservations. There’s also a restaurant on site: We didn’t eat there because we kept finding wonderful places to eat while out exploring the island, but the menu looked good and other guests told us they really enjoyed their meals. Would I stay there again? ABSOLUTELY.

We booked a room at the last minute when our boat wasn't able to make the trip over to Deer Harbor. We checked in very early and without any human interaction. Grabbed our bag and found our room all ready to go. Nice room - very homey and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was like scrounging at home except the fridge was clean and tidy here! Loved it. Checkout went as smoothly as check in - dropped our key in the basket on our way out and we were on our way. The Inn sends you a thank you email the next day - makes me wonder if this place is run by computers (the nice kind :). Will definitely visit here again. My kind of place!

Room Tip: Room 2 in the lodge had a great bed and big bathroom
