“Casual yet Upscale”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Le Chat Noir is a lovely and very inviting lounge/restaurant, located on the third floor of an historic building in the historic Fairhaven district of Bellingham. Finding it is the hardest thing about going there! It is marked by a small, black corner sign -- "Le Chat Noir" -- high on the wall at 12th and Harris Sts., and by another very small sign -- "The Black cat" -- next to the building's entrance on 12th St., next door to the prominent Mambo Italiano restaurant. Once in the building, take the stairs or elevator to the 3rd floor and look for the entryway in the northwest corner. Their sign at the entryway is very easy to miss!

Once inside, you'll find the restaurant that is divided into several cozy rooms, with decidedly 18th Century, romantic Victorian decor, fit to satisfy any romantic date.

The menu is quite eclectic, ranging from fondues and sandwiches to crepes to filet mignon! Drinks are equally eclectic. Prices are moderate+, ranging from $8 happy hour fare, salads, soups, and desserts, to entrées in the $17 - $28 range. Everything ordered at our table (a group of 19) was beautifully presented and expertly served. Entrées were all prepared to order, so they took about 25 minutes to arrive, but we were plied with our drinks, sourdough bread, and our soups and salads to smoothly fill the time. While everyone was happy with their orders, several dishes stood out as particularly good: the cheese fondue, the Greek salad, the French onion soup, and the "Chat Noir" crepe. The entrée plates were good, but less "special" considering their higher prices. There were also a couple of oddities with the entrée plates: the "cooked" carrots were huge slices and nearly raw (still crunchy!) and the roasted new potatoes were very hot peppery spiced (good, but shocking). Servings were large -- no one in our group saved room for dessert.

All-in-all, I most recommend Le Chat Noir for a very relaxed and romantic early evening out, for a meal of their fondue, small plates, appetizers, and drinks.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

Our group, three adults and four young teenagers, went to Black Cat Sunday evening 8/12/2012. The place was not at all busy, only a few tables, but the server was not attentive and our meals took 40 minutes to arrive. Too long of a wait for a group that was obviously not going to be spending time having cocktails and appetizers. The food was good but not great. Their "famous" caeser salad was just OK.

“We went for happy hour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

and sat at the bar. We had two appetisers, Avenue bread and garlic aioli and 3 sliders. Both were really good. We could have used 3 times as much bread with the aioli. They didn't skimp. We used the the extra aioli as an extra ingredient on the sliders. They were good to begin with but that put them over the top. Both were discounted during happy hour.

Our bartender was really nice and good at her job. And man does she pour a mean drink. We were both drinking beer but a couple of her drinks would have put me on the floor.

It's an interesting place for a restaurant. The building looks like its 150 years old. The floors and most of the interior look original. We went on a nice day and they had the windows open so we could catch some sea breeze.

We thought it was worth our time and would recommend it to anyone.

“Great food, crummy service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

My husband and I were looking for a dinner spot in Fairhaven while staying at the Fairhaven Village Inn. The Black Cat offers what we consider a traditional and typical french restaurant experience, which means, great food and drinks, poor service. This restaurant was no exception, but is worth the wait for the spectacular steamed clams and entrees. Cocktails have a french flair and aren't too sweet. Stop by for lunch or dinner, but make sure you have plenty of time. This seemed like a great locals spot and definitely not touristy, which we consider a plus.

“Non-traditional atmosphere with very good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2012

Very casual, third-floor location. Service was good. Food was very good with unusually generous portions. We ordered an appetizer to share and a salad to share as well as two entrees. The salad and appetizer were both superb and frankly would have sufficed as our dinner. Mixed reviews on the entrees, one excellent chicken dish and one rather over-rich beef stroganoff, but to be fair we were totally full after appetizer and salad.
