We stayed at the Hotel Bellwether, my wife and I, for four nights starting April 27, 2011 and then traveled on to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island for three nights. We had a king waterfront room, second floor. The room was large, comfortable, excellent view on the balcony of the marina, the bay and a park on the other side of the marina, and a nice fireplace. Absolutely no complaints about the room, everything worked as it should, bed and furniture all clean and comfortable and the room in general was clean and well kept. There was secure, underground parking which was extremely convenient.
There was an excellent restaurant just next door, Anthony's Hearthfire Grill, and we had dinner there twice. Both food and service left nothing to complain about. There is a paved walking/bicycle path that goes around the marina to Zuanich Park across from the hotel. The park is active on evenings and weekends with families, walkers, joggers and kite flyers as well as people with their dogs, something we loved to see as we miss our Border Collies when we are traveling without them.
In the hotel was a small, cozy bar/lounge with fireplace and an excellent view. There was also a restaurant and we had breakfast there once, had a dinner of several appetizers in the bar once. The food was very good with only one flaw. The breakfast omelet I had was very tasty and well prepared but the hash browns were a bit cold in the center. It really wasn't enough to complain about at the time and we're early risers so were seated just as the restaurant opened.
The only downside to the location is that you travel through a typical waterfront business district to get to the hotel and downtown Bellingham is a about a five minute drive or a good long walk. The village of Fairhaven is about a fifteen minute drive.
The staff were pleasant and helpful, no complaints here at all. All in all Hotel Bellwether was a really pleasant, relaxing stay. We will definitely return as we love the Pacific Northwest, so different from Florida.
If it were possible I think a 4.5 of 5 rating would be more accurate.
