Went on the 6-hour Island Mariner cruise on Sun, Aug 12. The weather was stunning, the boat was nice, the staff was very good and the the stars of the show, the orcas, were positively spectacular! We were fortunate enough to see hundreds of sightings...of course, of the same pod of whales surfacing many times.
It took quite a ride to get out to where the whales were that day, but that was a lot of fun, too, because the sights in the San Juans are beautiful and the naturalist kept us entertained with tidbits of information throughout the trip. Be sure to take extra memory cards and batteries for your camera---I ran out of both, but not until I had taken about 200 pics. I was extremely grateful that they hadn't stacked the boat to its passenger load limit.
The beer was tasty and not over-priced. Although they serve some good food, we brought our own and didn't feel at all awkward doing so. Last, but not least, the two restrooms on board were clean.
One caution: If you buy your tickets through Groupon, call Island Mariner directly to confirm that the correct number of people are reserved for the day you want. I had paid for 3 tickets, was charged on my credit card for 3 tickets, but only 1 was signed up for the 8/12 trip. The Groupon website made it appear as though I had done everything correctly, but I apparently was supposed to know that I needed to enter in the names of each of the ticket holders. I didn't, but fortunately they were able to get all 3 of us on the boat since they weren't full that day.
