“Right on the marina - great decor, great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

One of our favourite places to eat in Bellingham. Right from the entry with the flaming fountain, you know the decor is themed and lovely. Inside, you pass the open kitchen with the hearthfire-style ovens, and are seated with spectacular views of the marina, the ocean, the islands beyond. Boats come and go in front of you and you feel you could be in Newport. The seats are tiered, so everyone gets a view.

The food is good, and they use lots of local ingredients. When we arrived, the rhubarb season had just passed, and it was time for strawberries. Another time it was Copper River salmon, some of the tastiest salmon on the planet.

Make reservations - unsurprisingly, the place is always full.

“Appetizer portions small”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

My wife ordered a "bowl" of crab and corn chowder. The "bowl" was a small depression in a large plate. No crab to be found. Hardly enough to even fill a cup let alone a bowl.

“You're paying for the view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

The food at hearthfire is good, but definitely not worth the price. My husband had a tuna steak with wasabi sesame pasta. While the pasta was unique, the tuna was not, and certainly not worth the $30 price tag. My lingcod and pilaf dish was flavorless--the best thing about it were the 7 sauteed snap peas on the side. You expect to overpay for wine at a place like this, and we definitely did. The normally $13 bottle (at a grocery store) was $32. You really are paying for the view at a place like this.

Fortunately, the southwest facing harbourside patio tables are delightful at sunset. The Squalicum Harbor sailboats rest in their slips, and the grassy knoll of Zuanich Park sets the backdrop. Unfortunately for us, a table of off-duty Bellwether hotel employees set up camp at the table next to ours, drank too much, talked loudly about recent sexual exploits, and shared youtube videos on their phones. Here's hoping your visit won't coincide with theirs.

“Best happy hour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013 via mobile

If you can't get on the outside deck, go to the bar. The mixologists were a treat to watch, working their tails off. The outside deck was worth the wait. We just had appy's and wine. They have an awesome $5 appy menu that is worth starting at the top and going through. Service was very good, food very good, atmosphere and value was excellent. The view of the harbour.......beautiful. Anthony's is our #1 go to place in Bellingham.
