“Great find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2008

We spent a night at the Mountain Rose Inn passing through from the Greak Smokies to Washington.

It's a beautiful, tranquil place. The room we had was fantastic, decorated to the highest order and with a gas fire to take the early autumn chill off. The innkeepers were first class in their service and the breakfast was brilliant.

It's only minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, so a perfect stop off spot. We got some cheese and wine from Chateau Morrisette for supper and ate it in the cosy front room.

Make sure you take a walk in the extensive grounds.

This was our second stay to Mountain Rose Inn. We stayed earlier in the year (Easter Weekend) before the trees had opened. The setting was beautiful both seasons. With warmer weather this trip we were able to enjoy sitting by the river at the end of the day reading a good book. The B & B has several porches where you can enjoy star gazing in the evening, find a quiet spot to read or spend quiet moments, visit with loved ones or new friends, or just enjoy the frolic of hummingbirds. Dora and Mike are the perfect hostess/host and have taken much TLC towards caring for this beautiful historic home and those who stay with them. We look forward to our next trip to Mountain Rose and would definately reccomend it to our friends and family.

Dear travelers:

We greatly appreciate the kind comments that our guests post after staying at the Mountain Rose Inn. It is aways a pleasure for us to have guests that visit us more than once. Many of them become a part of our extended family.

As mentioned by this guest, all seasons here at the Inn are quite beautiful. It's one of the many reasons that we too love this area. It is a delight to hear that the Inn and surrounding beauty has worked its charm on yet another visitor to these parts.

Happy travels to all of you,
Mike & Dora Jane Barwick

My husband and I needed a short vacation and I wanted a B & B with a pool that was also in the mountains. We love staying at B & B's - but I had never had a 4 course breakfast before. It was fantastic! Dora Jane and Mike are wonderful hosts. The house is right on a creek and the humming birds will entertain you! It is located where you can visit some local wineries. We felt refreshed and relaxed.

The first rule in being a gracious host is to overcome personal angst and observe the situation. The innkeeper, Mike failed in greeting us after a long day and despite my restraints went on and on with his smart-mouth remarks towards me and my wife which were totally unnecessary. We decided not stay as I value my money and if the we were to be greeted in such fashion who knows about the rest of the stay. The inn itself is average with small, cramped rooms. It would be okay for short stay, but the website is prettier than the real thing.
Anyhow, my advice is to keep Mike in the background and let the Mrs innkeepr take care of the guests.
Overall, there are better lodgings close by for the money with much better service.

Mountain-Rose, Manager/Innkeeper at Mountain Rose Inn, responded to this review, June 29, 2008
Dear travelers:

We read this review with much dismay as we were unaware of any guest who had visited the Inn and left displeased with us or with the accommodations provided. When concerns are expressed, we always do everything that we can to meet guests’ needs and rectify any potential problems. We certainly regret that we were unable to meet this traveler’s needs, however it is somewhat difficult to correct problems that we do not know exist.

The writer mentioned that he thought the rooms were cramped. The Inn is a 100+ year old home. The average size of our guests rooms is 250sq.ft. Many of our previous guests have commented to us on how spacious, relaxing and detailed they find the guest rooms to be. The rooms are furnished with the comfort of our guests in mind.

We have in the past month had a couple who made a reservation, stopped by for a visit with large dogs in tow in spite of being informed of our no-pet policy, left for the kennel that we located for them and for dinner and did not return. We assumed that they reneged on their reservation without so much as a considerate cancellation call because their reservation was held with a stolen credit card. It is doubtful that they would have posted this review but we wanted to mention the one and only possible problem that we have known about in the time frame that this review was posted.

The old adage holds true – you can’t please all the people, all of the time. However, as shown by our many other reviews, we do please the majority of our guests who come to experience this wonderful Inn and our Southern hospitality. We are committed to caring for our guests and ensuring that their getaway is wonderful in every way.

Happy travels to all of you!

Really, my husband and I could go on and on about our stay at the Mountain Rose... but we'll keep this practical, yet enticing.

First, the innkeepers, Dora Jane and Mike, are tremendous managers and hosts!! They went above and beyond to make us feel right at home but completely special. We found ourselves drawn to them personally during our afternoon/evening down-time-- very easy to be with! They are open-books, professional business people, quick to respond to any needs, and eager to please. We actually miss them right now!

My husband and I stayed at the Inn on a whim for our honeymoon, having never heard of it two days prior. We found them online and felt good about the website... and that was all we had going for us. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised with how modern it is (yet still quaint and cozy), how CLEAN they keep every room, well-maintained grounds, flexible scheduling, fireplace in every room, privacy, porches, very nice bathrooms, etc. Oh, and the multi-course breakfasts are outstanding!! It's truly the whole "too-good-to-be-true" bit. My husband is a man's man, and even he's telling everyone about this B&B now.

We were looking for a mild-winter honeymoon destination with privacy and the opportunity to just be together. The small, hip, artsy town of Floyd is nearby for a good dinner, gallery-visits, country stores, antiques, coffee, music... And Mike recommended various spots for hiking (again, stunning!!)... but, really, we found ourselves saying to each other: "Let's just go back to the inn, sit by the fireplace, eat snacks, and play Scrabble." So we did. We didn't want to leave, even for a few hours. You just feel good there.

We are officially fans of honeymoons now, but we're junkies for The Mountain Rose Inn.

  • Liked — The overall ambiance and mood the hosts nurture for the inn...
  • Disliked — Leaving it behind

This was our second stay at the Mountain Rose - the property has improved, although it was great the first time, too. On this trip another couple of old friends was there with us and they loved it, too.
The property is sooooo quiet and relaxing that one has trouble getting to the next thing to praise, but probably the breakfast. The breakfast each day was delicious and substantial, we only needed one more meal that day. The local commerce is sparse and simple. You can buy fine local fruit at the right times of the year, but shopping is just not much.
The scenery all about is wonderful. You can get onto the Blue Ridge Parkway in about fifteen minutes, there are some tourist places and vineyards. You can have a decent meal at the Chateau Morissette (spelling?) on the Parkway, but in one man's opinion their wine is poor and the restaurant is just okay.
If you go to the Mountain Rose, you must go for the place itself and the rest and peaceful weekend, which are enough to bring us back again. The inn-keepers are perfectly gracious, friendly and helpful with any little detail you might require.

The Mountain Rose Inn is a slice of heaven on earth!

My husband and I took a one week driving vacation that started on the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 0. We enjoyed driving the Parkway and were amazed at the views, wildlife, and history that is to be seen.

We arrived at the Inn late on Saturday and were greeted by the dog and cat that live on the property. It was so quiet I felt like we were the only people within miles.

Our room was The Pride of Virginia and worth every penny. The room had two private porches and a very comfortable queen size bed. It was so clean you could have eaten off the floors!

Speaking of eating ... the breakfast is exactly what everyone else has described. From lemon tartlets to homemade waffles with a cream and pecan syrup glaze - it was all to die for.

The grounds of the Inn are impeccable and enjoyable to peruse. We had a glass of wine on the chairs by the stream one late afternoon, and the cat crawled up on my lap and took a nap. It was just like being at home!

I hope that this is just my first trip of many to The Mountain Rose Inn!

  • Liked — The peace and quiet of being in the mountains.
  • Disliked — It can be tough to travel the roads at night because of the location.
