“Great hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

What a wonderful hotel in this historic little town.
5 STARS!!!
We planned to stay there for one day only, but when we realized what a nice place it is, we stayed for another day.
The location is excellent, right downtown near all the restaurants and historic landmarks.
You can't find a better place.

We stayed at the George Washington Hotel one night for a wedding. The wedding also took place at the hotel. Being that it is a renovated, but old hotel, the rooms are a little small. However, they have been very nicely renovated. The bathrooms were a good size with double sinks and an oversized tub shower. My parents came with us to keep our 6 month old while my husband and I were at the wedding, so we had ajoining rooms - which is always nice to have when traveling with family. They provided a decent porta-crib for our baby. The beds were very comfortable with new linens. There was a fridge and mircowave in the rooms, which was great, especially travelling with a child.
One of the two elevators was broken while we were there, which made for long waits. The bellman was very helpful with all our bags when we first got there. He hurried right out to the car when we pulled up, which is always welcoming. And our rooms were ready by about 1pm, so we could get ready for the wedding.
The wedding was pretty nice, but I am very judgemental of weddings. The food was just so-so, your typical banquet food. The bars were always opening and closing, which was a little odd. The staff was all pretty helpful and friendly. It definitely seemed like they were well organized, and knew how to put one a nice event.
My parents ate downstairs at the Dancing Goat - the hotel restaurant, and they said it was NOT GOOD. So avoid that, but everything else about this hotel was very good.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The George Washington Hotel in Winchester, VA for a 3 day/2 night getaway for his birthday. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, and situated in a peaceful historic town with that "southern hospitality" feel. We got the room with the King Bed and I will say this... the bed takes up almost the entire room, due to the rooms being fairly small. The bathroom was gorgeous with the huge marble sink and giant glass door walk-in shower though. The entire hotel has marble everywhere, and gives that infinite luxury feel. The swimming pool with the columns in it is amazing, the architecture at the pool area is just outstanding. The jacuzzi was very nice too, although there was way too much chlorine in it (you could actually see the thick green/blue chlorine stuck to the bubbles that foamed up when the jets were turned on). The amenities in the hotel room were a little "lackluster" for lack of a better word.. The shampoo/conditioner/soap bar were of less than mediocre quality, and I would *not* recommend drinking the coffee in the room, it was absolutely terrible. They need to invest in some Folgers or Maxwell House, not whatever this "Wolfgang Puck" brand is. No problems with the Wifi in the hotel room, it worked great. Yes there is a daily parking fee, if you manage to get a spot in their back parking lot (probably will not happen, it's small and always full) then it's $5 a day. If you get stuck parking in the garage near the hotel, it's ~$10 a day and there's plenty of room in there. I noticed someone mentioned in their review on here that the hotel never disclosed there was a parking fee, but they did... it's on your receipt confirmation that is e-mailed to you after you book your hotel. It's in small print, but it's definitely there. Another fee that they slip in there is $1.50/day for use of the safe in the room.. if you do not use it then mention it to the front desk when you check out and they will take it off of your bill. I was also told by the front desk before I arrived that there is a $50 hold on your credit card when you book the room (expected..) but what they failed to tell me is that it is $50 PER DAY that you stay there. So for my 2 night stay they put a $100 hold on my credit card, on top of the price of the room + fees + etc. That's pretty much it for the hotel, I still gave it 4/5 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone, it's simply beautiful and worth staying at. If I may recommend one other thing, there is a tiny family-run cafe right down the street called "Just Like Grandma's" and they have AMAZING breakfast food.. don't be put off by the looks of the place, the food is like getting a home cooked meal!

PROS:
*Gorgeous, historic, luxurious hotel in a refreshingly quaint and peaceful part of town
*Hotel is very quiet and we barely saw any other guests during our stay because of how huge it is, even had the entire pool area to ourselves for hours
*Pool area is just... amazing
*Wifi in room is solid, no issues with reliability
*Friendly front desk staff

CONS:
*Skimpy amenities, terrible in-room coffee
*Tiny rooms stuffed with furniture
*Parking fees & hidden safe fees

Room Tip: We stayed in 204, I would recommend a room on the other side of the building or something because we...

The room was comfotable, bathroom very nice. However, website does not disclose that there is a parking charge of $5 a night & there is not enough parking for all visitors. It was messy to say the least. Also there are comparable hotels that offer complimentary edibles that would have been nice for the price.
