“Historic Inn with Great Music Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

This was our third stay at the Inn, one that we have been looking forward to for the past year and which will not be our last. Your innkeeper at the Nancy Shepherd House is one of the foremost musicians on the eastern Seaboard and certainly in the state of Virginia. David is a gracious host and the Inn provides the comfort and charm that is needed for a vacation in Northern Virginia. If you are a budding musician, please check with David for private lessons during your stay for an additional reasonable rate.

We spend a whole week in The Nancy Shepherd Inn.
The Inn is located in down town Winchester, really close to the best stores and restaurants in the city. The house is an Historic old house with all the charm, lots of antiques and books around the house and a lovely patio.
Wifi, no TV, shared bathroom with a nice shower.
The Owner is nice to deal with, friendly, helpful...

I stayed here when I came to see my friend's graduation ceremony. Her mother suggested we stay here and rented all four rooms. The owner is really nice and friendly. It was really amazing to look through the photo books of him renovating the house. He really enjoys the place and that a good thing to find. The breakfast spread was amazing and all made by the owner.
The rooms are well decorated and the mattresses are amazing. I got put on the tiny bed on the former attic floor but with the mattress the owner bought I slept so well.

I won't rate the value because I didn't pay for it but everything else was excellent about it. Close to the old town. I like to go running in the morning and this was a perfect area to go running in.

Would recommend it to anyone and return given the chance.

Room Tip: Room above the kitchen isn't the biggest but it's the best.

This is a wonderful place, if you are accustomed to old dwellings it will feel like coming home. The host does a great job of making people feel welcome and gives some advice on where to go and where to eat which is most helpful. I learned some of the area's history which I found fascinating and there are plenty of interesting things to read. It is a difficult place to leave whether you hav e lived in old houses or just want a great place to stay. We loved it

Room Tip: We are older so the second floor was a better choice for us.

We had a weekend in Winchester and wanted something located close to the walking mall where there are lots of great shops and restaurants, and really something interesting and not the standard hotel or flowery kind of B&B. The Nancy Shepherd house is authentic, restored but not over done. We had the top floor (watch your head) and loved it, having a large bedroom and private bathroom across the hall. Origianlly that room was the attic and I wondered about the temperature but the AC blasted lots of cold air so no problem there. Very comfortable bed, might have been some type of memory foam, solid feel and we both slept great.

Excellent WiFi signal, on-street parking (no troubles finding a spot) and perfect location for our needs. The owner, David, is immensely helpful, knows the town, did the restoration and occasionally has musical "jams" at his place, all string and very nice entertainment after a dinner out. We are already discussing when we can go back !

We opted out of the breakfast part and took the owners suggestion for a local diner Apple Grill ? It was a good 15 min. walk (there a places much, much closer) but we were having fun and exploring so that was fine.

Room Tip: Top Floor or the room off the kitchen.

The Nancy Shepherd house has all of the character, coziness, and comfort of an old fashion bookstore with a proprietor who will spend any amount of time either talking about history, local folk lore or any of the countless artifacts in the premise, or leave to your own devices. There are three separate bedroom areas with each offering their own personality. I stayed in one where there is a walk in shower unit similar to a cave that the owner personally designed. It gave a far better romantic setting than ant hot tub. Perfectly located, this property is a few blocks from Winchester’s pedestrian mall, upon which there was a craft beer brewing exhibition this weekend, and two blocks from major roads that lead all about the Shenandoah Valley. The first night I stayed at Nancy Shepherd there was a country blue grass jamming session (the proprietor is a professional musician who has made numerous foreign trips with Smithsonian cultural exchange visits). The next morning over coffee, he talked at length about how he restored this inn, pointed out different hardware, antique prints his family he acquired (his father was a scientist with the nuclear regulatory agency) and other restoration activities in the area. Nancy Shepherd does not present the overly fancy parlor of many Bed and Breakfasts that you are afraid of entering for fear of disturbing its image. Rather, Nancy Shepard is like visiting an elderly relative who says stop by at any time, kick your shoes off, put your feet up, brose through any number of books, look at all of the antiques, and feel relaxed. I fully recommend staying here if you are in the area.

This was a perfect place for our Vow Renewal. Our host was very attentive and made every effort to make our stay memorable. Our room was cozy and comfortable. The Inn was rustic and dated with antiques and furniture suited for the historic home that made you feel like you stepped back in time. But at the same time has all of todays convienencies. Our host officiated our Vow Renewal and made us feel so special. We will be going back to Nancy Shepard House.
