“Excellent Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

I loved this hotel! I stayed at this hotel for a wedding that I was attending and it was beyond wonderful! The staff at this hotel went above and beyond great customer service. Each room is different from the next which makes it a real unique experience.

This is one of the most interesting concepts in a hotel you will ever experience. My wife and I decided to return to Wedmore after staying a few days the previous summer - we were once again delighted. We had already become familiar with the quirks of the Inn, most of which stem from the fact that it is built more like a large home than a hotel, and this time it even seemed to enhance the great charm of the place. Every way we turned we were greeted with smiles from the staff, almost all of whom we knew by first name by the end of the stay.

Though the rooms are a bit pricey I suppose, the decor is priceless. It's tailor made for those who appreciate the finer details of European home aesthetics. It is not, in my opinion, meant to be a Euro-themed hotel with typical vacation-style bells and whistles.

The Winery tour is very enjoyable, and a convenient short walk from Wedmore. The restaurants are quite good (wait staff is both personable and unpretentious).

Though there is a multitude of tourist attractions in the surrounding area of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, it's surprisingly nice to stay in a unique, secluded place in the vineyards. It was curious to be a part of the "newness" of "old" in this place, which is another odd juxtaposition here. From this, however, I suspect that it will only get better with age.

We love to visit wineries, and Wedmore is located on the grounds of a high quality winery and a tavern restaurant. The tavern has indoor and patio seating. While we can recommend the wine and the wine tour, all other accommodations are disappointing.

The hotel looks nice, but is poorly constructed. The building is only 2 years old, but the floors squeak loudly, and noise easily travels from the corridors to the rooms. Our bathroom floor sloped about 2 inches over its 5 foot width. Dead bugs came out of the tub faucet when we drew a bath.

The food selection at the tavern restaurant was limited, and not very good. We did like the baguette bread, and asked if we could buy one to take back to our room. At first the server said yes, that they had plenty to give us. She returned a couple minutes later and said that she was wrong. She said that the only way we could get a bread was to go back to the hotel, ask the manager to call the restaurant to approve the purchase, and then they could offer the baguette.

The self serve continental breakfast was decent. However, the coffee was not self serve, even though juices, milk, and water were. We had to ask the breakfast area attendant if coffee was available. It is behind a counter, and the attendant had to pour it. We wanted refills, but at that point the attendant was gone, so we just left.

They advertise that the grounds can be enjoyed, and has walking trails. However, the brochure in the room cautions against using the grounds due to ticks and poisonous snakes.

The winery does not have an area to enjoy a bottle on the grounds. All other wineries that we visit have an area to have a bottle with real glasses. You can only get a bottle at the adjoining tavern restaurant, which has limited hours compared to the winery. After our wine tour, and especially considering that we were staying at the hotel, we wanted to have a bottle outdoors. The restaurant closed a few hours before the winery (4:00 pm!). We were not even allowed to use the patio area of the restaurant, or anywhere else on the grounds. We returned to our room disappointed, with no way to enjoy the grounds with our wine. We felt trapped!

There was no "poolside" bar service either. The bar existed, but was unavailable.

The wireless high speed internet was barely faster than dial-up, and the internet access dropped every few minutes. When you are already trapped in your room, the poor internet was particularly frustrating. My wife and I were sarcastically laughing about feeling like prisoners in our room!

Bottom line, we were honestly glad to leave the hotel after 2 days. The winery owner definitely knows how to make wine, but it appears that hotel management and hospitality are lacking skills.

We recently stayed at Wedmore Place for two evenings. What a marvelous experience! The Tuscany Suite was beautifully appointed and spacious with woodland views on two sides, and a fireplace. (No fire since we were there in May.) The kingsize bed, feather pillows and duvet provided two extremely restful, quiet and refreshing nights - a comfort level unsurpassed by other luxury establishments. Our bathroom was spotless with spearate shower and jacuzzi tub. I didn't try the tub but the shower was great. Continental breakfast at the Cafe Provencal was warm croissants, pastries, fresh fruit, etc. -- all very good -- in a delightful, informal setting. I also enjoyed spending a some leisure time in the library and recommend it to any bibliophiles -- the selection of books was very good and the chairs in particular were very comfortable. We found the small staff helpful and attentive without being intrusive. Wedmore Place has a charming European feel and exudes tranquility. It is surrounded by the vineyards of the Williamsburg Winery and it gives you the feeling of being far from traffic and hubbub, but it's only about 3 miles from Colonial Williamsburg.
Years ago, my sister spent her honeymoon in Williamsburg and based on our positive experience at Wedmore Place, my daughter is looking into having her wedding reception at the Winery and her first honeymoon night at Wedmore. I can't think of more romantic and wonderful venue for such a celebration. Our stay at Wedmore Place was great and I look forward to staying there again.

I honestly don't know how this place qualified for inclusion in the Select Registry and Small Luxury Hotels. I doesn't come close to living up to what we have experienced at other SR & SLH properties. When we checked in the staff completely mixed up what was supposed to have been included in the package we reserved. Spoke w/the manager later and found out that they knew before we arrived of the mix up - but NO ONE contacted us to communicate that beforehand. Front desk staff just tried to gloss over the situation w/out addressing/fixing/acknowledging any problem. I wanted to check right out again, and we should have with what was to follow.

So, on to other glaring problems. No hot tub in the miniscule pool area. Included bottle of "champagne" wasn't even palatable. Dinner in the restaurant didn't come close to being worth the $30/per entree charged. Breakfast was decent, but the service was lacking. The included tasting at the adjacent Williamsburg Winery was a hard sell of their lowest quality wine.

By far the most egregious lapse in service was courtesy of housekeeping. One of us had a nosebleed the first night of our two-night stay. There were obvious spots on one pillow and the sheet. But the SHEETS WERE NOT CHANGED!!!! That to me is reason enough to write off any hotel whatever the price range. Disgusting.

I agree w/previous posters regarding the lack of quality in the bathroom finishes and fixtures. It's almost as if they had these grand plans and then ran out of money at the end to carry them out. The noise level from the hallway was ridiculous. I can't imagine staying there if the property was fully booked. The noise from slamming doors and adjacent rooms would be intolerable.

The decor was nice w/a European Country feel. But I have stayed in comparable quality country inns in Europe but they were $60-80/nt not $250 and up!

My wife and I stayed at Wedmore for a week on our honeymoon. Overall, it was a great experience. I believe that there were only a few guests during that week and it was as peaceful as can be. The service was excellent and when we arrived, we were given a bottle of Williamsburg Winery Chardonnay along with a plate of assorted cheeses on the house. (because we just got married). The grounds are well kept and very quiet and the reserve wine tasting was fantastic. (I believe we tasted about 15 different wines). The complimentary breakfast could be better though. That is about my only complaint. Great place to stay!!

Stayed here with my new bride on Valentines 2009. If you are deaf or VERY SOUND sleeper than this place is great, as long as you are in be before 9pm and don't mind poor service. First off the major problem: The walls are PAPER thin. We were up at 2am because someone somewhere was snoring. It was not our neighbors but someone else in the inn. Of course the front desk had no ear plugs or fan. We also heard all the foot traffic in the whole place, just a poor design all around. Now, we booked the inn for Valentines because each room has a wood burning fireplace. How romantic, go out for a nice dinner and then come back to our room and have a bottle of Williamsburg Winery wine in front of a fire? Well for us, not so romantic because fires can only be done in the room between 7pm and 9pm. When do 95% of people eat dinner on Valentines? Between 7 and 9!! Lastly, the complimentary breakfast was nice except for the lack of plates, coffee cups, the empty carafes of coffee (both decaf and regular) and OJ. Oh well, it was only $250 a night. (sarcasm off)
Seriously, just avoid this place.
