“A Very Nice Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

My wife and I recently spent two nights at Wedmore Place. All in all, it was a very nice getaway.

The inn is located on the property of the Williamsburg Winery -- a few miles south of Colonial Williamsburg. The location is ideal. Although set amid a bucolic countryside, the inn offers very convenient auto access to the heart of the Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle. The owners have also taken great care to "shield" the inn from their neighboring winery, which can receive considerable amounts of traffic.

All the staff members we encountered were professional, accessible, courteous, and very pleasant. Our room on the second floor was smartly furnished, warm, and comfortable. The bed and its linens were downright luxurious. The bathroom offered separate shower and tub facilities. While the tub was a bit shallow, it was suitable for a hot bath. Since the inn was inspired by medieval English architecture, the windows were relatively small, but offered a pastoral view of pine groves and an adjacent pond. We were happy to enjoy a fire in the room's fireplace during our second evening.

The continental breakfasts were delicious and ample. The inn offered cereals, yogurts, breads, French croissants, jams, coffee, juices, and two kinds of specialty quiche. The continental breakfast was properly advertised as being included in the room price; however, guests (after taking their breakfast items from the bar and seating themselves) were given a written note that encouraged them to tip the host/hostess who served them coffee, tea, quiche, and other additional items during their meal. Admittedly, I was slightly thrown by this practice on the first morning and would have appreciated knowing about it in advance.

Overall, I would recommend Wedmore Place to any couple looking for a romantic getaway, and to any couple looking to explore the historical offerings of Williamsburg, but not looking to stay in a tourist-oriented hotel or inn.

The Inn overall is very beautiful. The quality of the materials is high, and the room is nice. We had some trouble with the fireplace, however, as the flue seemed to not suck out all the smoke. Likewise I did not like that the windows do not open anywhere in the room. Also, the choice of television channels is too limited. On the plus side, the bed is extremely comfortable. Shower was strong and toiletries were good. The biggest plus is the restaurant which was first class all the way.

We spent 2 nights at the Wedmore Place after driving an hour in a Virginia "snow storm." We arrived near sunset driving through a beautiful snow covered entrance past fields of dormant grapevines. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We stayed on the second floor in a cozy room with a wood burning fireplace. The bed was very comfortable and the bath was nice and clean. Breakfast was included and consisted of fruit, pastries, bread, juice and quiche. Service was attentive. Will return in the spring to see everything in bloom.

We recently went here for a quick getaway to celebrate our 7th anniversary. We asked for an early check in since we were only staying 1 night. We arrived at noon and our room was ready. We stayed in the Provence room as recommended by the courteous young lady on the phone. She also gave us the free upgrade since it was our anniversary. This location is great since it is within an hour drive and next door to The Williamsburg Winery.

When you check in, they often put a quick description in their computer. We were tagged "the friendly couple". We were curious why every time we checked in for something, we got a second glance. Then the girl at dinner told us about our description. She said that was the first time she had seen that in the computer. What can I say, 24 hours with no kids.... I am sure we were both grinning ear to ear when we checked in.

So.... after unpacking. We went over to The Gabriel Archer tavern for some lunch. We enjoyed a cheese platter and sandwiches. Then off to the wine tasting we went. The wines from here are not our usual go to's, but a few are pretty good. A bit pricey for the one's we like. A few wines are just way out there for our taste.

Then back to the room. We ordered some snacks to the room and a bottle of Bubbly. Then off to Café Provençal we went. Wow!! we really enjoyed our dinner. We would visit here again for sure.

This place is in a lovely rural setting among vineyards. Check-in was uneventful. The lobby is small and made uninviting to me by the suit of armor. Do we always need to be thinking about war? Upstairs on our walk to our room, I noticed the creaky wood floors, mentioned by other guests. The hotel is really quite new, so I wonder if the floors are not well made. My home is over 60 years old and the original hardwood floors barely make a noise. The hallway has lots of windows looking out onto the court yard, but is strangely claustrophobic, probably because of the roofline slants. The courtyard had a fine fountain in the center which wasn't working. Why not place flowering plants in and around it, rather than leaving it looking so sad? There is no seating anywhere in the courtyard, odd. Our room, the Catalonia, was large and well decorated. A reviewer mentioned the lack of a closets; our room had a cloak closet area at the entry and an open hanging space beside the fireplace but nowhere near the bath area. And getting to it required snaking around an antique writing table which was too long far the space. The bed was well attired in upscale linens and pillows. While we heard some sounds from other room during the day, (the new construction could have had better sound proofing), no one was in a late party mood and we all slept well. We enjoyed our Happy Hour wine, visiting with other pleasant guests. Breakfast was very good. We checked out early because of Super Storm Sandy and we had to change our flight out of Norfolk. The front desk handled this graciously.

Room Tip: Upstairs is quieter.

This 4-year-old hotel set in a square design around a French-style courtyard has so many things to recommend it: Ryan, the indefatigable front desk clerk who is responsive beyond words and will even set up a fire in your personal fireplace in the bat of an eye; the delightful new manager, Christine, who helped us solve some minor problems; lovely hallways around the hotel perimeter; a top-notch restaurant right downstairs; an exquisite property even in the dead of winter; lush towels; and a bedding package very close to that at the Westin. But, to really get it right, a few things must be fixed: the water temperature for showers and baths was barely warm, though we mentioned this kindly on night 1 and it still wasn't fixed by night 3; settling cracks all over the interior that take away from the otherwise luxe feel; a lack of closet space (even in the grand Venetian suite, we could find not one place to hang a coat); some very worn furniture in some rooms; and, as mentioned in another review, the noise on floor 2 that can permeate the quiet of rooms on the first floor because no room in the whole hotel is carpeted (area rugs but no carpets). There are some other places where the lovely Belgian-born owner of the winery and hotel has cut corners or just made odd decorating choices that take away from the ambience. A hotel listed in the Select Registry, as this one is, should have a larger, nicer lobby, for instance. And the breakfast could be a little more ample. I also don't know how we would have found the place without a GPS. There is absolutely no exterior lighting leading up to the hotel, and on a dark winter moonless night, we found it only with the help of an iPhone map. But, this place is going to figure out soon how to fix the minor imperfections, so get here while it's still mildly affordable. Quite a find.

For starters, overall this entire property is absolutely beautiful and very well maintained. Lots of neat little touches are seen everywhere--- from the hallway decorations to the layouts of the room. Let's start with the amazing stuff:

1. Ryan on the front desk. Whatever it was we needed, he brought us-- from realizing we forgot toothpaste to fixing the television when we couldn't get the NFL playoff games tuned.

2. Leah in Cafe Provencal. We had a package that included dinner and she made our dinner feel so specialized and such a personal celebration of our wedding the night before and it was much appreciated. The food was absolutely delicious, perfect temperatures, and gloriously fresh.

3. The complimentary breakfasts had platter after platter of fresh fruit and berries. A wide selection of juices and yogurts, fresh breads and croissants, along with spectacular quiches. And coffee. Lots and lots of hot coffee!

4. (Not part of the hotel, per se, but it was part of our package) but Tom gave us a reserve wine tour at the winery and he was knowledgeable, friendly, and thorough in teaching us about wine. We learned a lot, expanded our palates, and had a really great time.

5. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. Thick towels, fluffy robes, down bedding, and the quaintest wood floors and decorations. The bathroom was modern without seeming out of place with the room with a large 2 person bathtub/shower.

However, there were a few hiccups.

1. We arrived on Friday night (for our HONEYMOON, let me reiterate this, we had just gotten married ourselves) and immediately heard about the large wedding the hotel was having on Saturday. The "large wedding" became the theme of why things were or were not a certain way for the entire stay. I would have much preferred a little more personalized service. I think we heard about this large wedding in every setting we were in for the entire stay.

2. If you're an early to bed type- I'd recommend booking for a 2nd floor room. And to be kind to those of us who do go to bed before 10pm then please, STAY on the FIRST floor if you are a late to bed type. The first night the room above us wasn't occupied and we slept soundly. The following night the room above us was clearly having a party, and those quaint creaky wood floors immediately became a nightmare for us trying to sleep underneath that room. They stayed up until after 4am and then got back up at 7:30am which meant, unfortunately, we did too.

3. We stayed in room 11. I mention this because the water doesn't get hot enough for a bath. It is as if the dial isn't set properly on the wall as even on the hottest setting it still clearly had cold water coming in and you couldn't get the water to the proper temperature for a bath. We did mention this to the front desk clerk on checkout so hopefully they've looked at this by now.

4. Our couples massage. Again, not exactly part of the hotel but it was part of our package they sold us. One of the therapists was late, by almost 15 minutes, and our massage was cut short by 15 minutes. I wondered why we wouldn't have been extended until we walked out and saw that the next couple (part of the large wedding) were sitting and waiting.

5. Newspapers. There was only one for the whole hotel, left by the front desk at the coffee station. It wasn't like there is another place to buy a paper on the property so it just would have been nice to have been able to take the newspaper and work the puzzles like we enjoy in the morning.

Room Tip: Stay on the second floor if you go to bed early... the wood floors will keep you awake if you're...
