My husband and I have vacationed in Williamsburg frequently over the past 12 years. We LOVE Williamsburg and always look forward to an enchanting escape from a grueling year of hard work and stress, except it backfired this time. And of all times, this was a special wedding anniversary and birthday... so celebrating in fine style was part of our plan. We wanted everything to be just right...I've rented timeshares from friends and craiglist alike in the past, and always have been pleasantly pleased, until duped into Williamsburg Plantation. The pictures looked nice on this site and the woman (craigslist renter) who spoke with my husband seemed sincere in describing the *resort*, so we bit the bait. I paid significantly more than I've ever had and ended up with a run down old unit that smelled. I'm actually a bit perplexed that there are some good reviews about W.P., perhaps it's because they don't except a lot or don't vacation often. I could not agree more with the negative reviews on this site for they depict the truth, particularly the recent one from Richard (Roanoke, VA). His report is articulate in describing life at W.P. Our experience:
1) We were rented an old unit!! Old appliances, outdated decor, and the clincher... a full-size bed. I thought I was going to faint upon first seeing it. My husband is 6'3' and we didn't think full-sized beds existed in master bedrooms anymore...very small master bedroom... yet the bed had a king-sized flat sheet and a old fitted sheet that was so old, the elastic did not hug the matress. Everything in the place was junky and I found myself scheeving everything I touched.
2) The doors, including the one entering into the timeshare unit, were ALL dirty.... fingerprints, one looked like it has some dried ketchup on it,,,it was disgusting. We were on the second floor and the stairway smelled of a mold odor.
3)The deck off the unit... wish I took a picture to share.... under us was a a set of old AC unit that constantly grinded for dear life, so a peaceful rest on the deck was out of the question.....no view, just vinyl shingles with trim that was in desperate need of paint.,, this set-up also includes two upright rubbermaid ($5 value) chairs with it's own matching rubbermaid end table...and ashtray!
4) The pool area. Overcrowded, cloudy water, dirty tables and loud static pop music blasting.... it was more of a punishment to sit there than what one envisions when vacationing, of rest and relaxation in the pool area. The pool and patio furniture are in severe need of hot water and soap, and updating. My husband asked that a table be cleaned because it was very wet from a storm and had food on it.... the staff person at the front desk directed him to the towel bin and told him, he'd have clean where he wanted to sit.
5) Other than the entrance into W.P..... the grounds are very unattractive, with old rusty grills and sand spots everywhere... no landscaping beauty.
Let me point out, there are new units that likely provide nicer interior set-ups, but remember you still have to deal with the pool area and the club house is outdated and staff a bit aggressive,,, It was disheartening to watch staff badger people upon checking on about signing up for the usual line of *free ticket to.. for a quick tour of*.
By day three I was in tears, because realty hit that we had been swindled, especially for the money we paid...and this trip had personal meaning. Upon my return home, I contacted the renter from Craiglist, and sent her a similar e-mail of what you've read here... No reply or apology to date..
I encourage people go to Kingsgate (off Richmond Road) if you're interesting in renting a timeshare..... I rented there several times....beautiful rooms, beautiful grounds, adult pool for those who are looking for more peace and serenity, clean crisp water. no grinding ac's near your windows, the decks off the units are beautiful with adirondack chairs and landscaping. best of all... KING-SIZED beds, with state-of-the-art bedding and sheets, and huge room with flat screen tv's. DO NOT RENT AT WILLIAMSBURG PLANTATION!! The Guest Relations Mgr. can pipe back on this site,,, and say the usual... "their goal is to please, etc. etc". Unless they reimburse what it cost me to stay there... Don't bother posting. W.P. management or the Craiglist renter cannot give me back my vacation time from work, the money I've spent, the travel time. It's done - together, you ruined our stay this year.
From the many times we've stayed in Williamsburg, Kingsgate is your very best bet.
