“Convenient to all attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

We took our 17 year old grandson here for his birthday. It was chosen because of its closeness to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. We were in a two bedroom condo with a full kitchen which we did not use except for breakfast. This is a great resort and I would recommend it to any family traveling to this area.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms on the lower level have a jetted tub. the upper level does not.

Avoid the summer crowds but still enjoy the diverse activities and pleasant, warm weather Williamsburg VA has to offer! We vacationed here for 7 days beginning on September 6 in 2013. This is now my favorite vacation time of year in Williamsburg and my favorite spot. The Historic Powhatan Resort in Williamsburg is a Timeshare Resort that also offers rental units. Rental rates in September were reasonable especially since you can get a comfortable 2 bedroom unit with full kitchen, dining area, living room, balcony and 2 baths for a price that could easily be paid for a standard room in one of the area's better hotels. Plus the resort has on-site indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, playground, etc. There are 2 restaurants on site (One is casual with OK food, the 2nd which is called "The Kitchen" is more upscale and the food is very good) and a small store to get milk, etc. Regular grocery stores, an array of fast food take-out, coffee shops, restaurants, outlet shopping and more are a short drive from the resort. Resort staff members are friendly and accommodating. (At check-in or while at the resort, you may get invited to a free informational breakfast...this is actually a presentation to purchase a "vacation experience" (timeshare week)...just tell the caller or concierge, or vacation assistant that you're not interested...unless you are... and to please not contact you again during your stay).

Williamsburg VA is a beautiful location that offers diverse activities for everyone. In addition to the extensive historic attractions and sites the area is noted for there is an array of other options including great theme parks (Busch Gardens, Water Parks, etc.), golfing, shopping, etc. The Yorktown River Walk Area (about 20 minute drive) and Virginia Beach (about an hour) are all only a drive away from Powhatan Resort.

Early September in Williamsburg is perfect for those who want to get away, avoiding the summer crowds yet still being able to enjoy the warm weather and related activities (outdoor swimming, beach, etc.) in addition to the many other historical amenities. Although some of the theme parks have a reduced schedule, most attractions/activities are still open! Since the summer crowds are gone, you can truly enjoy the historic tours or the theme park rides and shows without having to stand in a stifling crowd or wait in excessively long lines.

Stayed here for our couple's weekend getaway (1-AUG/3-AUG) this time. The rooms were nice I was skeptical about going back because of the negative reviews. However, I have no complaints about the room itself my only complaint is that after checking in you have to go to the concierge desk. As soon as I got over there I mentioned that I was not doing any tours so if thats what this is about im not interested. So I was done but the couple I was with got trapped LOL (I've done this a time or two so I always say no to tours now). They thought it was a brilliant thing (mind you I did warn them) so they made an appointment that was only supposed to last 90 minutes because we had plans to go to Busch Gardens. They were in there for 3 1/2 HOURS. They were pissed my fiance and I were pissed. So we just went to dinner and came home (it was our last day there). So other than that we enjoyed ourselves. The ADULT ONLY pool is where we spent the most time. So yes I would definitely recommend this place.

Overall

8/10 - A most enjoyable 2 weeks, with a couple of quirky bits.

Arrival/Departure/Staff

10/10 - Smooth with no probs. The entire staff are brilliant with particular thanks to Jason in Concierge, and Sheldon, a most helpful maintenance man.

Grounds/Environment

10/10 – magnificent, with well - behaved geese.

Security

10/10 - excellent and discreet.

Restaurant

9/10 – huge portions but yummy.

Accommodation

6/10 – very dated and in need of refurbishment. Furniture was very 1960ties style and a bit worn. (Was watching great 60ties replays on Antenna of Mr. Ed, Green Acres, 3’s Company, etc., and the furniture was Powhatan!) Also, the mysterious hot tub room – now with no hot tub.

Accommodation Cleanliness

7/10 – Bathrooms and beds spotless, but cobwebs, and dust on the fan blades were a bit yucky!

Landline

3/10 - Cellphone reception poor in our location, (not necessarily Diamonds fault) but it took 10 day of constant requests to get an outside line on ‘9’.

Conclusion

8/10 As above, and will return next year, hopefully to some refurbishments.

Spent the first week of April at this resort and it had everything we needed. The room was clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. The grounds were well kept. Check in and check out were easy. As my friend and I had a busy itinerary we did not spend much time on the resort nor did we use any of the resorts amenities. The location was perfect for us. By the third day we were already planning our return trip for next year.

So we didn't want to fly to Mexico this year to use our beautiful Grand Mayan suite so tried to exchange it for something on the east coast. Was trying to go to NYC or Cape Cod. Nothing available (6 months in advance) for the 3 week range I was looking to travel. Only available resort that was within driving distance was Williamsburg. We were put in the historc Powhatan resort. Upon arrival they told me I didn't have reservations even though I had the confirmation in my hand that was made 5 months ahead of time. It took them almost 40 minutes to figure it out. The reservation was put in the timeshare owners name, not ours. I asked if they could put us in an updated room which I learned to ask from others here on tripadvisor. They didn't even respond.

We needed up with a very outdated unit with the musky smell, worn cabinets, and moldy bathroom. Not anywhere close to what we stay in when we travel in Mexico. We got the short end of the deal on the exchange. This is not the Powhatan's fault (not exactly), but the exchange company's fault. There is no room service or towel exchange or anything with a 7 day or shorter stay. Kitchen was perfectly functional but not exactly pretty. What can I say, I have been spoiled by the Grand Mayan and the hilton resorts.
On a positive, the resort grounds were well kept and beautiful. The pools were nice and the live band on the one night of the week is great. We did see a couple of other units. My sister stayed in a much nicer unit...maybe because her wasn't an exchange but she paid for the few nights she stayed there. Cash is king..you pay to stay you get a nicer unit; you exchange you get a crappier unit. The model unit use by Diamond Resorts International is awesome. Granite countertops in kitchen and all bathrooms, larger beds, clean bathrooms with huge tubs and showers, gorgeous furnishings throughout. Of course, this was far from what we stayed in.
I won't be going back. No reason to re-visit Williamsburg, not because of the Powhatan.
Hope this helps a little with those of you who plan on exchanging for this property.

Stayed in the 2br/2ba with full kitchen condo unit. Nicely updated with granite countertops, clean, spacious for a family of four, and comfortable beds. Stock photos are exactly what our condo looked like. White appliances in the kitchen could use updating but they work and not a big deal. Saw a few ants in the kitchen but did see maintenance outside spraying around the condo units. Dishwasher and washer/dryer were very loud. TV in master bedroom could be updated as well. Resort grounds were nice. Unfortunately, we didn't stay long enough to do much (ie. pool, mini golf, fishing, kids activities, etc). Old mansion onsite was neat and enjoyed the history of the area. Overall, a nice comfortable stay at an affordable price. Used a Groupon deal. Was not bothered at all at check-in for any timeshare pitches. Would have liked for wifi access to be included in the price. Wifi costs extra fee. We had issues with wifi the next morning and called AT&T. We were refunded our fee since they were unable to figure out why we couldn't access the wifi anymore. Within a few minutes drive from local attractions. I would stay here again if I found another good rate.
