We decided to go to Colonial Williamsburg for a few days. After carefully screening other hotels and B&Bs in the area, we confidently decided on Bentley Manor Inn for two main reasons:
1) They were running a fantastic special of stay two nights and get the third night free, and the special was good 7 days a week (most properties just offered this Mon-Thu)
2) We read wonderful reviews about the Inn. As someone who works in the hotel industry, I knew it had to be special to get such positive consistent ratings across the board.
When we made our reservation, we spoke with Fred Garland who, along with his wife Jane, owns and runs the inn. He gave us a choice of which room we would stay in, and we chose the Captain John Smith room, which we loved! However, after seeing all the rooms there, we would have been pleased in any of them. The rooms are even more beautiful in person than the pictures on the internet.
We arrived around 2pm, but Fred told us we could check in whenever it was convenient to us. Fred immediately welcomed us and showed us around the inn. He also gave us a great map, along with suggestions for dining and activities. Throughout our stay, he and Jane gave us such great suggestions for local restaurants. We had an idea before we came which restaurants we'd go to, and Fred and Jane's suggestions were so much better.
The room was pristine and spacious. We had a beautiful bed, a large private bathroom, and a closet that held a small refrigerator. There was also an ample selection of books that Fred and Jane had collected over the years that were fun and interesting.
Breakfast was OUT OF THIS WORLD every day. Jane collects china and I have never eaten off such pretty plates. We had juice and coffee every morning. The coffee was by far the best I have ever had. We got a lovely little fruit and yogurt cup every morning. Jane always gave us a choice of two entrees. While we were there we had Apple Danish French Toast, Sour Cream Apple Pancakes, Cranberry French Toast Stuffed with Cream Cheese, Sweet Potato Pancakes, and a delicious omelette.
We sat around every morning for about an hour and just talked to Fred and Jane. They are fascinating and personable.
After returning from our activities each day, Jane had bottled water and either cookies or brownies set out. Not to mention the scrumptious candy dish in the common area and each bedroom.
I must also mention that I was visiting over my birthday. I do not want to give away Fred and Jane's surprises, but I will say that they truly went above and beyond to make my birthday special. It was the little touches from them that made my birthday so memorable.
We were originally scheduled to stay Wednesday-Saturday, but we had such a great time we opted to stay another night. I have never in my life met two people so passionate about hospitality as Fred and Jane. We will most definitely return to the Bentley Manor Inn. Words cannot describe the truly lovely experience we had there. I could go on forever about the inn and its delightful keepers.
