“A Very Romantic Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2010

My husband and I recently stayed at the Governor's Trace B&B and I must say it was top-notch! The website pictures did not do this place justice~it was much more than we expected! We stayed in the Alexander Spotswood room. The room featured a wood-burning fireplace that was all set up and ready to go (& had additional wood there for us to use) and a huge bathroom. The bathroom featured a large walk-in shower and was immaculate. The room was appointed with Sue's collection of brass tavern plates and other colonial decor. We especially enjoyed the lanterns above the fireplace, they really gave a romantic glow to the room. We enjoyed breakfast in our room (and we could choose between a later time or earlier time) and it was delicious. There was no TV which we also liked, we could truly relax and enjoy each other's company. The B&B was literally a 2 minute walk to Christiana Campbell's Tavern and the Capital bus stop in the historic area. We parked the car and didn't use it until it was time to leave. Dick also gave us some recommendations on where to go for dinner and sites to visit. They also helped us take a photo on their stairs for our Christmas card photo this year. We highly recommend this place to someone looking for a quiet respite but not too far away from the action. Very romantic and we hope to visit again soon.

This is one block from the historic district! Both Dick and Sue, the owners, were very hospitable and informative. The candlelight breakfasts were superb. The room was comfortable, warm and cozy - no radio, TV or Internet - heaven!

This is a highly recommended B and B.

The candlelit breakfast and the location was the best features.
We would definately recommend this B & B, and this town.
The bed was a little hard, could benefit from a pillow top.
The Nicholson room on the first floor has its own sunporch to eat on,
and was VERY nice.

Staying at the Govenors Trace was a blessed treat. The Inn was very nice and such a quick walk to Coloinal WIlliamsburg. The inn keepers were very nice and such great host in recomneding places to go and to stay away from. They were very hospitable and had a wealth of knowledge about the area. The breakfast on our pourch each morning was with out a doubt the best part of the stay. The inn keepers had such passion for detail in even the smallest of things. Our room was very comfortable, clean, nice and well decorated. It was a wounderful place to spend a romantic getaway weekend and we can not wait to come back.

We booked this B&B on a whim, luckily they had a room available for us at the last minute. We really knew nothing about it, we just chanced it and I'm glad we did. The house is quaint and cozy. The bed is AWESOME and the room is nice a dark in the morning, just open the blinds a little and "wallah" you got the perfect stream of light shining in your room. And to top it off, breakfast is served in your room on your time, this was perfect! And the breakfast was the best we've ever had at a B&B. Dick and Sue were so pleasant .. wish we were able to stay longer ... it was a pleasure, thank you.

Governor's Trace Bed and Breakfast has three guest rooms all furnished in antiques. The owners are friendly and considerate. One of the most memorable parts of the stay is the candlelight breakfast served in your room on beautiful china with matching linens. The breakfasts are superbly cooked and elegantly presented. The B&B is an easy walk to Colonial Williamsburg. It adds to the comfortable experience that the payment is taken care of before you arrive, so there is no mention of money nor receipts to sign there. The bathrooms are all en suite.

Beware Governor's Trace strict cancellation policy. It is clearly stated, and we knew we were taking a risk when booking. Cancelations two weeks+ are refunded in full, but anything less than two weeks and you will not be getting your money back.

I came down with the stomach flu the Friday morning we were supposed to drive to Williamsburg for our "babymoon" the first time - I was six months pregnant so this was to be a "last hurrah" weekend for us. The Governor's Trace owners were able to sell our room for one night of our two-night stay, so we received a $175 credit toward our re-booked stay.

Fast forward nearly a month, and I unfortunately ended up in the hospital in pre-term labor at 29 weeks. We were just BARELY within the two-week window of our re-booked trip, once again, and the owners said there was nothing they could do. They were unable to book our room for either of our rescheduled nights.

Their lack of compassion each time we called was appalling, especially considering winter is not a peak season for Williamsburg. I really don't believe our last-minute cancellations put them out nearly as much as they made it seem.

So, we're out more than $500 and a "babymoon" as well; we can't afford to pay three times for a weekend away with a baby coming so soon.
