“Convenient Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for three nights in December 2012 and used it as our base during a visit to Colonial Williamsburg. The rooms was clean and nicely appointed. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We arrived by train and the hotel arranged for pick up upon our arrival and return transportation when we checked out. The hotel is located right next to the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center and, as guests of one of the hotels affiliated with Colonial Williamsburg, we received a significant discount on our multi-day visitor passes. Colonial Willaimsburg operates a shuttle service that connects the Visitor Center with other areas of the Colonial area so, if you tire of walking, you can easily catch a ride back to the hotel. There is a complimentary continental breakfast served each morning and, if you leave hungry, it's you own fault. There is a full service restaurant located less than 100 feet from the hotel lobby doors. The room rate was, I felt, quite reasonable. If my travels ever take me back to Williamsburg, I would not hesitate to stay at this facility again.

We visited for a Christmas get away. We had a wonderful time. The hotel was clean. The staff was both friendly and knowledgeable of the area and things to do. The lobby was beautifully decorated for the holiday season with a tree and large fireplace that was always burning. We enjoyed our breakfast at one of the seating areas in the lobby. The continental breakfast was better than most. Hot coffee was available 24 hours a day. We didn't eat at Huzaah the hotel restaurant. We opted for the fine dining in the historic area. Shuttles run to both Historic Williamsburg and Busch gardens from the visitors center. The Woodlands property and the visitors center properties meet. It is less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel to the shuttle pick up. We've discussed making this trip a tradition with hopes that our children will be able to join us.

My husband and I go to Williamsburg every year for our anniversary (it's where we spent our honeymoon). We've stayed at a few different places over the years and when they built Woodlands we tried it and fell in love! We always get a suite so it has the mini-kitchen with microwave, fridge, coffee pot, etc. We bring some food and drinks with us to save money and it works well for us. The beds are comfortable. I can't comment on the pillows because I always bring my own when I stay at a hotel. Although there is no room service with a little planning you can have everything you need in the evening in your room. We usually grab some sandwiches from The Cheese Shop and some beer from the grocery store in Williamsburg and settle in for the night. We don't find the walk to the historical area difficult at all, although as we get older we will probably take the shuttle.

Room Tip: I highly recommend the suite rooms. A little more cost but gives you more options for food and drin...

My husband & I had a suite here Dec 1 – 8. Could not have asked for a better set-up or location! The room was spacious, very clean and up-to-date. Flat-screen Sony on the wall of the sitting area; older TV in the bedroom. No problems with water temperature or pressure. Our AT&T phones had no service, but the wi-fi was fine.

The continental breakfast was on a par with what we’ve had at other hotels; it’s what we expected--no complaints. We ate at the Huzzah restaurant twice. Food was tasty (great collard greens!) & the service was quick & friendly without being overbearing.

Front desk personnel were friendly & responsive. One morning I thought I had lost my Fitbit (pedometer). The person at the front desk gave me a short form to fill out & even dialed Security at Colonial Williamsburg so I could talk to their Lost & Found department. I found the Fitbit a little while later & this same front desk person was very happy for me. She even asked to see the gadget to know what I had been talking about.

This was our first visit to the Historic Triangle & the location of the Woodlands was perfect for us. We had great weather for the first part of our stay so we enjoyed the 10-minute walk across the bridge into CW. Other days we used the convenient shuttle from the Visitor’s Center next door. It was great to be able to park the car & not worry about driving. And it was easy to hop on the Colonial Parkway on the days we drove to Jamestown & Yorktown. (We did eat at a couple of restaurants on Richmond Road; overall, we were glad we didn’t have to fight that traffic each & every day to get to CW.)

Room Tip: The suites are roomy & spacious.

If hotels are all about location, this would get better marks, but that isn't the case. You are a guest in someone's home, so if the management & staff don't go out of their way to make the trip worthwhile, why go back?
The best part of our hotel experience was the reservation process, which is amazing. One central number provides all you need to know, and the people are very helpful. This was the only hotel available for when we wanted to go, so we were a bit stuck.
Let's be honest, this is nothing more than an enormous glorified motel. There is no room service. There is no in-room mini-bar. There is no bar in the hotel, nor a lounge. There is no all-day restaurant. Yes, there are options in Colonial Williamsburg (pretty much only until 10pm, because that is when shuttle service stops) & the surrounding area, but sometimes you just want to unwind with a drink & not have to travel out of your hotel, especially if you've been walking around as a tourist all day.
The check-in people are nice and as helpful as they can be, as they are constrained by what the hotel can offer.
There aren't enough carts for the rooms in the hotel, so you have to be prepared to wait.
The "restaurant," which isn't one, is open for breakfast only, but the doors are open 24/7. You can get hot water for tea by the giant coffee machines in off-hours, as long as the staff isn't in there prepping the "continental breakfast."
Breakfast consists of pre-canned (i.e. not fresh or baked locally) muffins, sausage or bacon, eggs, rubbery pancakes, yogurt, some fruit, cereal -- all served on paper plates with plastic utensils.
We didn't have any hot water for any of the 3 mornings we were there. We called and complained each morning. It came on later on, but it was a nightmare. They told us they fixed the problem, which was throughout at least our area of the hotel on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but it wasn't the case. (Seriously, a sold-out hotel without hot water on a holiday weekend. You'd think they would have had that fixed in minutes, not hours...)
In the end, they took money off our bill, but we would have rather had hot showers each morning.
There is no mobile phone service, unless you have Verizon, and then it is only spotty. You won't get calls or texts in the hotel, but they'll all come when you get into Colonial Williamsburg. There is no rational reason for this inconvenience in this day & age.
The list:
Shower pressure: Awful for a 3-floor hotel.
Front desk: Helpful & kind.
Bed: Lumpy and below average. The pillows were horrible.
Sheets/Bedding: Below average.
Towels: Itsy bitsy teeny weeny & thin.
Phone service/attendants: Generally very helpful & sweet.
Room size: Average.
Location: Medium-to-long walk to Colonial Williamsburg, but there is a bus. Very long walk to Merchants Square, so tough if you want to stay out at night as shuttles stop at 10pm.
Room service: None.

My travel group booked this hotel based on price. Was not communicated with them that the lounge was closed two days a week, one of which was the day we checked in. Had to walk into town to get adult beverages. Also was not made clear to them about transportation arrangements, so there was moderate confusion as to how they were to get back to hotel from their walking tour. Comments about the rooms were very positive. I have stayed here mnay times in the past and find the hotel to be very convenient, clean, staff to be very accommodating. I would definatedly stay again.

Booking was easy and hassle free.

Check in was personal, professional and covered everything needed and more.

The room(s) were big, spacious, clean comfortable and everything you'd expect from a Colonial Williamsburg hotel.

The complimentary continental breakfast was great, expected a small selection but was greeted with cereal, bagels, sweet and savoury pastries, toast, ham & scrambled eggs one day and sausage and pancakes the next with unlimited tea coffee and juice too.

Located 2mins away from visitors centre and a brisk 15min walk along a trail to the historic area, the location in my opinion is amazing!

The only issue is bad phone reception but the complimentary wifi more than makes up for that.
