“Great bargain in Williamsburg!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2009

This is a seasonal property of Colonial Williamsburg and what a bargain!
Our room with two queen sized beds was large, clean and comfortable. A very nice continental breakfast is included with lots of choices and our admission tickets to Colonial Williamsburg were included It is less than a half mile from the visitor center. The desk staff is friendly and helpful. We were there at the height of the spring break season and the price was just $59.00 + tax per night.

We stayed in two connecting rooms on the night of April 9th. Each room was $66 per night, which is very cheap. I did not expect luxury or newer facilities, but I did expect cleanliness. Both rooms had 2 double beds. Both rooms were very dirty -- it looked as if the rooms had not been vacuumed in months. There were dirty tissues under one bed, and huge dust balls and lint on the carpet in both rooms. One bed had a broken box spring (or so it appeared) and was actually tipping off its base. One could not sleep on that bed. The television in one room did not work at all (it was plugged in). Neither room had a working clock radio, so why were they even there? The blankets on all 4 beds were stained, one had a hole in it. The one extra blanket was dirty and covered in all sorts of hair. The telephone was dirty. The pillows were so stained that you could see the stains through the pillowcases (I always bring my own pillowcases, for which I was grateful). There was a coffee pot, but in only one of the rooms. One of the towels appeared to not have been washed -- it had black marks all over it. Because we checked in after 11 pm, we had to check in at a neighboring property -- which the promotional material discribed as "next door." It was not next door and not accessible except by car. At night, it was difficult to find since we were not familiar with the area. There is no staff on duty at the Governor's Inn at night, so if there is an emergency on the property, guests are on their own since there were no contact phone numbers in the room. The location is good (about a half mile walk to Colonial Williamsburg), and there is a free continental breakfast (which was very crowded so you had to eat in your room). But neither the price, the location, or the free breakfast were worth having to stay in a filthy room.

An older, very basic motel-style hotel. Very good price, with extra benefits as a Colonial WIlliamsburg property. A filling, varied free breakfast. Clean but simple rooms. We could hear the family in the next room, but they quieted down about when we did, so it was not a problem. Some reviewers complain about the train noise, as the hotel is right next to the railroad tracks. We heard 2 trains in the night, but they pass quickly, with no bells or horns, so it was easy to ignore them. Only the lightest sleeper in the family even noticed, so it is not a big problem. We took the train from DC, walked about 2 blocks to the Hotel, and could have easily walked the 6 blocks or so to Colonial Willamsburg, but took the free van that they provide. From Colonial WIlliamsburg, we also took free shuttle busses to Jamestown and Yorktown, so we could see all the historic signts and not worry about renting a car. The staff was helpful and very friendly. Highly recommended if you don't need frills

Stayed here 11/19-11/23 to visit the Historic Triangle. The hotel is nothing fancy at all. The room served its purpose, and was clean and replenished with all of the necessities daily (fresh towels and cups and toiletries). It's smallish and basic (small t.v. but it worked fine with plenty of channels).

The staff were extremely nice. We needed directions to the Mariners Museum and the front desk helped give perfect directions, always a plus when the staff knows how to send visitors out without them getting lost.

The breakfast was fine albeit in a rather tight dining area. Actually it had a lot more variety in food options than I was expecting, another plus.

It's within a couple blocks of the main drag (Duke of Gloucester Street) and is a nice easy walk if you wish to do that. The visitors center is literally around the block, takes 2-3 minutes to drive to it and the bus system for visitors is outstanding.

Yes the train does go right next to the inn, but the engineers never blow the horns so it was never a bother. Then again we slept with the fan/heat on all night for white noise and wore earplugs, which helped keep the outside noise level down. But even just watching t.v. the train going by was never a bother.

In all I'd recommend this place for the budget minded who just want a close place to stay in W'burg, within walking distance of everything.

I chose the Governor's Inn as it seemed inexpensive, clean, and it' was close to my main reason for the visit: Colonial Williamsbug. The complimentary shuttle to the Visitor's Center clinched it.
The staff was always friendly and accomodating. My room, a few steps from the hotel office (Rm 1106), was a train nightmare of noise so they immediately offered another room (Rm 1120) which had no train noise. A few cons though: the walls are paper thin so I could hear every word of my noisy neighbors' conversations and TV. The room was a bit smaller and the sink's counter was higher (I'm 5'2"). Also, this room didn't have a light switch near the door like the first room so you had to walk in the dark to the lamps mounted above the beds. Otherwise, it was a fine, basic hotel room.
Using the shuttle from their sister hotel, the Woodlands, next to the Visitor Center, allowed me to stay for evening programs at Colonial Williamsburg without walking in the woodsy area after dark. That and the Historic Triangle Shuttle to Jamestowne and Yorktown meant that I avoided the cost (and carbon emissions) of renting a car, too. I'll probably stay there when I come to see Colonial Williamsburg in full spring bloom.

  • Liked — Location, complimentary shuttle, great staff
  • Disliked — thin insulation between unit walls, lack of light switch by door

For the price of this place, I really can't complain. There was a few hiccups like the stain on the carpet and they had to fix our hot water the last day but that's it. Otherwise this place is well worth what you pay for it. It was located within walking distance of Williamsburg. Warning it is nice walking to Williamsburg in the morning but walking home after a long hot day is not fun because you're exhausted. On the plus, once you get back they always had juice and coffee in the lobby for free to drink. In the morning they had a very nice, large continental breakfast included. Tip, don't eat in the lobby, it gets extremely crowded. I suggest to go up the stairs in the lobby, there is a whole other area with the same breakfast and seating and alot less crowded. Another bonus is because your staying at a Williamsburg hotel, you get a discount on the night time tours which we took advantage of. Another tip is to buy the refillable mug. You can buy them right in the hotel's lobby and it gives you free refills the whole time your in Williamsburg. The place isn't spectacular but reasonably priced, clean with lots amenities in a good location.

  • Liked — breakfast, location, discount on tours in Williamsburg
  • Disliked — older rooms, stained carpet
