“Great place to stay in Williamsburg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2008

After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, I decided to give this place a try. We were a family of three on a budget and staying at this hotel gave us free passes to Williamsburg (for one week) and daily continental breakfast. The hotel room was pretty nice (think of a Holiday Inn) and the breakfast was ample (juice, muffins, danishes, hard boiled eggs, English muffins, bagels, fruit, yogurt, instant oatmeal, fruit, coffee, tea, hot chocolate). The pool was pretty nice as well. The location is right next to Colonial Willimsburg and 10 to 15 minutes from Busch Gardens/Water Country. I was well pleased with the room. The staff was helpful and friendly. Some people have complained about the train, but we didn't hear it at all. If you're not happy with the room, the staff will help you out (i.e. change the room). If you are on a budget, I would definitely recommend this hotel. Call 1-800-HISTORY to book.

If you are used to Hampton Inns and Hiltons, this is not the hotel for you. I booked a room because it seemed very close to the Downtown Williamsburg area (which it was) and because the hotel offers a very attractive admission ticket price to Colonial Williamsburg. However, I was disappointed at the facilities. It is just like a Motel 6 or any inexpensive hotel. Actually I have seen Motel 6's that were better than this. The room was clean in general. The curtains were worn out (you could see the light come through the holes). The blankets were worn out. Really it would not take that much money to make it look decent. The other down side is that is right next to the train station. We could hear the train at night and my husband kept waking up. Since we were just there for three nights and stayed out most of the time, we decided to just ride it out. But for the price, you are better off to stay at another location, park your car at the visitor's center and ride the buses.

Yes it is an older property but it is well kept and in a peacefull location. We walked to the historical area which was only two blocks away. The room was nice and clean and the staff and breakfast were very good. Be aware that the buildings do not have elevators so if you have problems with stairs, be sure to ask for a handicapped or first floor room.

We stayed at the Governor's Inn during a visit to Colonial Williamsburg from June 22-24th. We booked this room as part of a package deal through the CW website.

The Inn looks like an old Motel 6 or Best Western. Nothing fancy but the room was clean (2 double beds, chair with table, small TV and bathroom) and served the purpose.

You can drive from the Inn to the CW Visitor's Center and take the bus to the Colonial sites but there is really no need because your only about 2-3 blocks from the site and the walk is very pleasant.

The hotel staff was nice and free breakfast (danish, fruit, hard boiled eggs, cereal, bagels, toast, etc.) is offered daily. There is also a pool onsite and my kids enjoyed it.

A nice stay for the price.

We stayed at the Governor's Inn for two nights. The property is within walking distance of Merchant's Square and Colonial Williamsburg. By staying here we were able to purchase discounted admission tickets to CW. The room itself was basic but clean. It was about what I would expect for the price. The free continental breakfast was convenient and good: pastries, bagels, cereal, coffee, etc. The front desk and housekeeping staff were very helpful and accomodating. This property is the perfect location for touring CW.

We stayed in Williamsburg for 3 nights on 6/12/08 - 6/14/08. The first night we found a ROACH in our room on the bed. We were moved to another room at The Governor's Inn. The 2nd night we found a ROACH in our "new" room. We traveled with another couple who also found a ROACH in their room on the 2nd night. The hotel staff were very nice and professional and moved us to The Woodlands hotel & resort for no additional charge for the 3rd night of our stay.

I was also disappointed that there was no in-room refrigerator.

The contintental breakfast, the staff and the pool were all very nice but, the roaches couldn't be overlooked.

The Woodlands was a very nice place.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, nice pool and continental breakfast
  • Disliked — ROACHES in 3 of the rooms
