“Great rates and walking distance to town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

This is one big hotel. Their corridors go on and on. They offer great rates and free parking. The staff is friendly but I have found most Virginians to be really friendly people. The rooms are a nice size but a bit dated. I would definitely stay here again. It was quiet at night too, but I don't think the hotel was that booked. It's about a 3 block walk to old town.

“Good value and nice room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We booked a room at a special prepaid rate online (about$75) for New Year's Eve. The hotel is across the street from the stadium at William & Mary; the location is ideal for walking to the First Night activities. The staff was friendly and courteous and the room clean and charming. It was cold in the room and we couldn't figure out how to adjust the heat, but after a call to the front desk a maintenance person came and took care of it for us.
The parking garages have some height limitations, so be sure to ask where to park based on the height of your vehicle.
The breakfast buffet is delicious. There are two buffet choices - the full buffet with eggs and meats or the continental with cereal, fruit, yogurt and pastries. Be sure to specify as there is a price difference.

“Convenient and clean, but dated”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

I stayed here for several days while attending a conference at the hotel. Parking was a bit difficult to locate at first (you have to go around to the back of the building to access the parking deck), but ample parking was available. Check-in went very smoothly, and the staff was very helpful throughout our stay. They provided me with change for the vending machine, answered questions about checkout, and were able to direct us to conference activities. In fact, one member of the cleaning staff actually stopped what he was doing and led us all the way across the hotel to get us to one of the conference rooms. Of course, this points directly to one of the downsides of the hotel -- it has one of the most confusing floor plans I've ever seen. Conference rooms are given obnoxiously similar names, the hallways are like a maze, and the rooms numbers aren't always in numerical order. Even after three nights at the hotel, I still had difficulty finding my room at times. The room itself was clean, though nothing extraordinary. The carpet and furniture was rather dated. The bathroom was very cramped, and I imagine that a larger individual would actually have a very difficult time shutting the bathroom door. The ceiling in the bathroom was also rather low, which made me feel a bit claustrophobic. On the bright side, there was a sink/vanity area in the bathroom, and another out in the room. This was very convenient when there were two people getting ready in the morning. The location of the hotel was also fantastic. It was easily within walking distance of Colonial Williamsburg, the Merchant's Square shopping area, and the College of William and Mary. If that's not enough, it was only a short drive from tons additional shopping and restaurants.

In short, the positives outweigh the negatives at this hotel. The downsides include the maze-like hallways, small bathroom, and claustrophobic decor. However, this is balanced out by the wonderfully helpful staff, clean accommodations, and convenient location of the hotel. I would stay here again.

“Small problems....but will go back”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

When we arrived, we were taken to our room. It was so cold I had to put on two sweatshirts to be comfortable. We were told by e bellman that heat is not on in the rooms until guest come. The heating system is extremely noisy so you have to listen to a lot of noise to get your room to temp. The grab bar in the shower was rusted off at two of the screws and was a hazard to anyone that would have tried to use it. Several rooms on our floor had room service around lunch time however, the dirty dishes and trays set outside the doors on the floor till the next day. They were still there when we left. Te staff is awesome, the onsite breakfast was wonderful. We will return!!

“Exceptional service and serene surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

After reading some negative comments on Trip Advisor (many of which seemed rather petty and not the fault of the hotel, like people talking outside of their room) we were somewhat concerned about our upcoming stay at the Williamsburg Hospitality House during Christmas holiday. We knew that the location and price could not be beat, so decided to stay there anyway.

We were incredibly, pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful hotel it is and the calibre of staff and services. I don't know if management fired the entire staff and rehired or magically transformed the hotel in a month from the time the negative complaints were made or what, but we found none of the issues mentioned, no dirt, no bad smells, no rude or scary staff, no noise, no loss of hot water, nothing--we experienced quite the opposite. One wonders if they were actually at this hotel or confused with another.
As we approached the elegant entry doors, we were greeted by a friendly and helpful doorman, who also directed us after check in to the underground parking closest to our room. He helped unload the car and took all our luggage to the room for us. The front desk person was cheerful and warm and had us checked in within minutes.

The reception lobby was beautifully decorated in elegant Federal style furnishings and artwork. The fireplace area was so inviting to sit and enjoy the warmth and ambiance, overlooking the lovely and spacious courtyard. The courtyard looks like it would be really nice to sit out in during warmer weather. It had an authentic Colonial/Federal design with brick, arches and large dental trim details, filled with large potted trees, blooming flowers, evergreen plants and elegant tables and chairs. There were a number of other sitting areas around the lobby, one had a grand piano and portraits of William and Mary.

We found a parking spot in the covered and brightly lit garage just across from the elevator and went up to our room. The hallways to our room were elegant and well lit, the room itself was tastefully decorated, including a table and chairs, a desk and an armoire with a tv that could be closed up. The bathroom was roomy, with a separate anteroom with closet and second sink away from the toilet and tub. Although the bathroom fixtures were very "80's" everything worked well and was exceptionally clean. The beds were some of the most comfortable we've ever experienced in a hotel, they had thick newer mattresses with a pillow top that seemed like memory foam inside. I have a bad back and am usually sore after sleeping in most hotels or bnbs, I had no soreness and slept through the night in total comfort. The pillows were equally nice, plumped but not too thick or thin.
It was so quiet and comfortable in our room we almost didn't want to go out.

The Papillon restaurant in the lobby was beautifully decorated in a French cafe design, with stained glass ceiling and light fixtures and lovely murals of Parisian life all overlooking the bright courtyard mentioned earlier. The elegantly presented breakfast buffet was incredible: eggs, bacon, omelette, sausage, ham, biscuits, grits, potatoes, french toast, numerous sweet pastries, an oatmeal bar with toppings and nuts, a fruit and yogurt bar, and a selection of juices, even pineapple! The coffee was excellent as was all the food, and there was a separate coffee bar near the door to fill up to go cups, all included for under $12 pp. The staff were all warm and friendly and treated us like VIPs. The other restaurant was a very upscale grill for dinners, with a bar. We did not eat there, as it was a bit pricy, but others who did told us it was excellent.
Any question or request was handled with care and professionalism by all the staff during our stay.
Before retiring, we walked around the extensive hotel for some exercise and discovered the ballrooms and meeting rooms, all overlooking the courtyard, with new elegant bathrooms and other amenities for conventions (a row of computers to use and a check in table area). We thought it would make a great place to have a wedding reception or other event. We walked some more and found the gym with exercise equipment and a television and biked for a bit, while not missing our show. There is a pool as well, but it's an outdoor pool, rather small for the capacity of the hotel. But then this is not Florida, this is more an area where people come to see Williamsburg or visit the college so it doesn't seem that necessary.
The entire hotel was extremely clean and tidy; we felt as though we were in a five-star hotel like the Ritz, and at such an amazing bargain price (they gave us an AARP discount on top of the already low winter rates). We would have paid twice as much to stay in such a nice hotel, within walking distance of the historic area. We will definitely stay here on any return trips to Williamsburg. PS: Wifi is FREE.
