“Beautiful and friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2010

My wife and I and our 12-year-old stayed in the Cabin at the Middleton Inn. Mary Ann welcomed us and helped us get oriented. The cabin was beautiful and elegant, but also very warm and inviting. It was also stocked with some board games my son and I played on our first night. Our son used the upstairs room while my wife and I used the downstairs BR. Breakfast was incredible! Jerry, the chef, was super friendly and happy to accomodate our son's limited diet. And my wife, who doesn't eat eggs, was offered a terrific assortment of freshly-baked scones, yogurt and fruit. Even the cats outside were sweet!! One last item that I have to mention - the softest bath towels I have ever used in my life!! All in all, a great Inn with delicious food and friendly people.

My husband and I, and our Golden Retriever, Rosie, have stayed at the Middleton Inn two times now, and will certainly be returning. We originally chose the Inn because of its location within walking distance of the Inn at Little Washington, and the fact that they have two accommodations that are pet-friendly. We have stayed in both the Cabin and the Cottage. They are both private and luxurious, but in a very homey way. Rosie looks forward to romping in the extensive, beautiful grounds and rolling in the lush grass after a long day in the car. And she felt especially welcomed on her second visit by the treats and toy that the staff had left for her. Our son and girlfriend joined us in the Cabin this visit. It was very comfortable for the 4 of us, and we all agreed that we would enjoy cooking in the well-equiped kitchen and spending time in front of the fireplace on a longer stay. Breakfast is delicious and substantial, and the staff are warm and helpful. We would stay here even if we didn't have dinner at the Inn at Little Washington!

My husband and I stayed at the Middleton Inn to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, and had a wonderful time. Neither of us had ever been there before. The Middleton Inn is about an hour and a half from DC, and very pretty on the outside, with a large front lawn and porches with chairs for the guests on both the front and back of the house. We were greeted by Mary Ann (the owner) and her two friendly dogs as well as a few similarly friendly cats when we arrived. We stayed in the comfortable and quiet Churchill Room and were thrilled (and surprised!) to find champagne on ice & a cheese platter in our room in honor of our anniversary (thanks again Mary Ann - very thoughtful). My husband actually reserved the B&B as a surprise for me while he was out of town on a business trip, and Mary Ann helped him by recommending local restaurants and even making our dinner reservation. Breakfasts on both days we were there were excellent, made by Jerry, the chef. I am a big fan of fresh fruit with breakfast and was not disappointed. The cherry scones in particular were delicious (and Jerry made them again for us for our 2nd breakfast after we told him how much we liked them on day 1!). We also loved the fruit/yogurt/granola parfait. We appreciated all of the little extras, including dark mint chocolates placed on our pillows when our bed was turned down (I got to enjoy my husband's too as he is not a big fan of mint), port wine in the sitting room, very comfortable high quality bed linens, and complimentary bottled water placed in our room on a silver platter & crystal glasses. Overall we had a great time and would highly recommend this bed & breakfast to others, for a nice romantic and/or relaxing getaway or to celebrate a special anniversary or event.

A few recommendations for things to do & eat in the area: We enjoyed hiking the Little Devil's Stairs (which runs along through a gorge with small waterfalls in the creek to enjoy during the hike) in the Shenandoah Mountains, as well as the free wine tasting to the Gray Ghost winery (where we bought 2 bottles of wine). We loved the fish & chips, hanger steak, and cheesecake at the Blue Rock Restaurant & Pub (we sat on the "pub" side) and the duck breast at the Thornton River Grill. We also enjoyed just relaxing sitting on both the front and back porches of the Middleton Inn with something to read.

My fiancee and I recently spent a night at the Middleton Inn and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had gorgeous views of the hills from our large, comfortable room. The Inn itself is beautiful, and the surrounding grounds are expansive -- a relaxing place to sit for hours with a book. The proprietor, Mary Ann, is wonderful, and can offer recommendations about wineries in the area. She treated us to complimentary champagne on our arrival and an excellent pre-dinner cheese plate. Before checkout, we were treated to a fantastic, multi-course meal by the Inn's own chef -- starting with warm, melt-in-your-mouth scones and ending with eggs Florentine that incorporated locally-grown asparagus. If you have dinner plans at the Inn at Little Washington, it's a very short walk from the Middleton Inn -- no need to get back in the car. If you don't have dinner plans at the IALW, you absolutely don't need them to enjoy a visit to Washington, VA -- a stay at the Middleton Inn would make the trip worthwhile. I'd happily go back.

We are not big fans of Bed and Breakfasts, as we like to keep to ourselves. The Middleton Inn was the perfect compromise. Not only is it lovely, but it has a Cottage that is separate from the Main House, which we had all to ourselves. We stayed overnight on a Saturday. We walked to the Inn at Little Washington for an early dinner, then walked around the grounds of the Middelton Inn, played with the cats, greeted the dogs, and watched the horses. The Cottage has its own little yard, with chairs on the front stoop. The next morning, because the weather was so lovely, we sat outside to read the paper. The chef brought us a pot of coffee first, and then brought us a delicious breakfast, which we ate sitting outside again. Overall a terrific experience. I'd definitely return to the Middleon Inn.

We stayed just one night to celebrate our 25th anniversary with dinner at the Inn at Little Washington. The accommodations were just perfect. We stayed in the Cottage. Arriving at 3:00pm we were greeted with a bottle of Champagne with cheeses and crackers. I noted that the glasses were crystal and the trays and cooler silver.
The bed was very comfortable with good sheets and luxurious Egyptian cotton towels.
Breakfast was great with fruit cup, scones and a light and delicious omelet.
The proprietor and staff were exceptional. The property is just on the edge of the village so we walked to dinner.

.
We throughly enjoyed our stay at the Middleton Inn. The Ascot room had a beautiful view of hillsides and mountains. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and we both slept very well. The grounds of the Inn are lovely. We especially enjoyed watching the two horses quietly munching hay in the late afternoon. We did not sample the wine and cheese the evening we arrived, but breakfast the next morning was delicious. Chef presented us with buttery ginger scones and tasty omelettes. No problems accomodating non-meat eaters. All in all a lovely and relaxing time. We will return!
