Could only getaway for one night mid-week, as we had to get back to the kids, but it was worth every penny. Sure we could have stayed at the other Inn, but why would we, when we could have the cottage house all to ourselves. The cottage house is well worth the extra cost, as you can come and go as you please and with lots of privacy.

“Lovely, romantic getaway”

Middleton Inn

May 5, 2008

The setting is just so lovely - a large, beautiful converted home overlooking lovely lawns; barn complete with horse nearby; cats and bounding dogs (all outside) as a welcoming committee. When we arrived, we were offered a nice glass of wine in the sitting room, which gave us some time to chat with the other guests and start unwinding while looking at the relaxing view. Coffee available from 7:30ish was nice; breakfast was brilliant, prepared by their personable and accommodating chef. After breakfast we just sat on the back porch and enjoyed the view - shame we only had one night. At $295+, our room was a bit pricey I think in comparison with others we stayed in, even in places such as Savannah and Charleston where you'd expect nice inns to be pricey. And the bathroom was made up of 3 parts - one with toilet and small sink with all the towels; one shower room without towels; and an exposed vanity with sink but no towels. So just a little odd and you had to plan (take the towel into the shower, etc.) a bit to use the areas. But different certainly, and the vanity didn't look out of place within the room. (Sorry no pictures of the house or our room, they were lovely.)

This was our ninth visit to the Middleton Inn, and it was so delightful that we are busy planning our tenth!

As we drove up the hill to the beautiful Federal manor house, we saw horses grazing in the paddocks, and the owner's yellow labs coming to greet us.

Being dog lovers, we were delighted to learn that two of the guest buildings, specifically the cottage and the log cabin, are now pet friendly.

Middleton has the most fabulous breakfasts, and pays special attention to (and remembers) any dietary restrictions and allergies. We and other guests raved about the scones, and the inn graciously provided the recipe. The entire staff is always so pleasant and helpful -- definitely giving the guests a jump start to a wonderful day. They prepared a different and creative breakfast each of the seven days of our visit. Two of our favorites were a light as air strata and a lusciously decadent orange-glazed French toast.

Best of all we love and never tire of looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains through our bedroom window with a roaring fire in the fireplace and a good book to read.

If one can arrange a visit to this beautiful spot , it is a treat not to be missed.

Perched on a hill overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, this B&B is as charming as it gets. The property has been beautifully restored, and the sitting and eating areas, both indoors and outdoors, for all guests to enjoy are cozy and welcoming. The bedrooms in the main house are spacious, comfortable and decorated with a terrific sense of style. The proprietor, Mary Ann Kuhn, is just lovely and emits a wonderful sense of warmth when you come through her doors.

As an animal lover, I adored looking out the window (while enjoying my freshly brewed tea and warm scone) and seeing her 2 retired horses lazily grazing on the property. They were even happy to accommodate my desire to rub their muzzles and treat them to an apple.

The guest is king/queen, and Mary Ann and her very capable staff will accommodate any request to ensure a memorable visit to the Washington, VA area and her unique inn. A wonderful, relaxing, "recharge your batteries" type of experience. We'll be back!

“Outstanding Retreat at the Middleton Inn”

My organization held a three day Retreat in the lovely little town of Washington and used the Middleton as our headquarters. We found the accommodations warm and inviting, the service outstanding, and the food delicious! Mary Ann Kuhn, the innkeeper, made a special effort to accommodate our unique needs, from helping us to find a location for a yoga class and wreath making to making dinner reservations and sharing information on local hiking options. We found the Middleton to be a perfect venue for enjoying all that Rappahannock County and the Blue Ridge have to offer and would definitely return.
