We stayed here almost a year ago to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and have been meaning to leave a positive review. Everything previously mentioned here is true - GREAT breakfast (my husband enjoyed it more than the dinner at the Inn), professional and warm hosts, nice and comfy rooms,... We plan to come back here and do the Tour D' Epicure. I like it that there are a lot of sitting spaces - outside with an expansive view, in the sitting area that has the help-yourself port, the room with the tv, computer, and reading material. When we booked the room, it was too early to make reservations for The Inn. No worries, Diane put it in her calendar and said she'd put in the reservation for us as soon as we get into the reservation period (30 days prior?). It is evident that this couple set this B&B with your comfort in mind. The adorable lab Stella, through either training or invisible fence, will only stay a distance from the adirondack chairs so that you are free to either admire Stella from your chair, or go into her zone and play catch. The Pearsons have a cutie infant/toddler (who was introduced during breakfast), but we never heard a peep from that child throughout our stay - how do they do it?

We stayed at the Foster Harris for one night following dinner at the Inn at Little Washington. Staying overnight after dinner at the Inn, and staying at the Foster Harris House especially, was a great decision for us.

We stopped by the Foster Harris House briefly before our dinner reservation at the Inn to freshen up. Our friends, who were not staying overnight, also changed into clothes for dinner at Foster Harris. Diane was friendly but efficient, showing us the common areas and our room, and allowing our friends to use a vacant room to change. The B&B is within a 5-7 minute walk or a 1 minute drive from the Inn, along the main country road.

We stayed in the Compton Room. The bed was very comfortable and the shower and L'Occitane amenities were lovely. Breakfast was definitely the highlight of our stay at Foster Harris. Breakfast rivaled our dinner at the famous Inn at Little Washington the night before. John is an excellent chef and we very much enjoyed sitting on the porch listening to music and enjoying the scenery during breakfast. Diane also gave us directions to Shenandoah for a hike after breakfast.

All in all, it was a wonderful stay and we would love to be able to spend a few more nights if we are in the area again.

Everything about our experience here was fabulous! Diane made us feel at-home immediately. We chatted easily as she took us around the house to select our rooms and point out where to find what we needed. She even gave us a great inside tip about asking to see the kitchen at the restaurant where we had reservations that night. The rooms were adorable. I got a great idea for our guest bathroom at home from a great little detail the owners removing eye-makeup. And last but not least, the food was absolutely amazing! John is an amazing chef and we cannot wait for him to publish a book. Breakfast included a 4-course gourmet breakfast that started with homemade ginger scones, a parfait, followed by a poached egg drizzled with chipotle sauce alongside mango-glazed bacon with asparagus and avocado-tomato salad, and for dessert a german pancake filled stuffed with lemon curd. The Foster Harris House exceeded our expectations and raised the bar for all b&b's we'll stay at from now on. Check out some of our pictures from breakfast!

My girlfriend and I booked a night at Foster Harris based on reviews we saw at Tripadvisor. It turned out to be one of the best weekend retreats we have had. We liked the location for couple of reasons:
i) It is only 30 min drive from Skyland drive
ii) It is 2 blocks away from Inn at Little Washington

When we arrived at the property, we were warmly greeted by John. He accompanied us to our room. We were pleasantly suprised by the ambience of the room and a great fragrance all around the house. John gave us a quick tour of the property. Property has just 5 rooms and John & Diane personally take care of it. Linen, bathroom, toiletteries (they use l'occitane), bed, living room, media room, patio for breakfast, garden...it was all great

However the best thing about our stay was breakfast that John cooked. It was a four course meal and one of the best breakfast we have had. It began with Fresh juice, tea/coffee and ginger scones. I still have the frangrance of ginger hitting my nostrills. It was followed by fresh fruits with vanilla custard and then main course. Main course was egg on a puff with chipotle sauce, tomatoe/ avocado salsa and bacon with mango chutney. Followed by this was small bites of pancake with banana and chocolate sauce. Just yummy.

We will definitely return

The Foster Harris House is one-in-a-million. Innkeepers John & Diane MacPherson are extraordinary hosts and the Inn itself is lovely.

My husband and I have stayed in many, many bed and breakfasts over the years. We swore them off several years ago because we found so many innkeepers to be, in our view, either too needy (wanting to monopolize our time) or slightly odd and off-putting. Our three night stay at the Foster Harris House turned out to showcase the best of what bed and breakfasts can be.

If you enjoy good food (and many of the Inn's guests dine at least one evening at the renowned Inn at Little Washington right up the street) then you will swoon over the breakfasts prepared by John. To say they are sublime may be an understatement. They rival any meal we've eaten at The Inn--or anywhere else for that matter. I could write an entire essay on the glories of breakfast at the Foster Harris House.

Diane is a warm and thoughtful Innkeeper who answered our questions about what vineyards to see and what new restaurants to visit with excellent recommendations. Everything she suggested, we thoroughly enjoyed. And that's not always the case.

As avid hikers and bicycle riders, our visit to the area was designed to enjoy those pursuits. And did we ever! In addition to taking spectacular hikes, John and Diane (who are both avid and excellent bicyclists--John having ridden professionally) provided us with maps of their favorite routes. Especially for my husband, (a Tour de France junkie) a highlight of our stay was the morning that John offered to ride with us. Since I'm just a "weekend cyclist," I was somewhat concerned that I would be riding too slow. If that was the case, John never let on. He made us feel like the pleasure of the morning was all his and matched his pace to ours. That's true kindness.

The property, in Washington, VA, is at the foot of the Shenandoah Mountains and, perhaps more importantly to some, within walking distance of the Inn at Little Washington. The rooms are nicely furnished and the MacPherson's provide much appreciated "extras" in the common areas. There is, for example, a refrigerator stocked with bottled water and soda to which guests may help themselves. Guests may also use the phone (to make both local and long distance calls) at no charge. Finally, a computer for the use of guests is available. This was particularly helpful as cell phones and other wireless forms of communication don't work in this area.

On our last day, we departed early in the morning in order to squeeze in one more hike before heading back home. As we headed out the door, John and Diane handed us a bag filled with croissants still warm from the oven. We've spent lots of time since our visit trying to figure out the earliest possible time we'll be able to return!
