Naturally, our expectations were very high as we headed to Little Washington. The town is charming, the inn is lovely, and the staff is friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Our room was quiet and every detail was well thought out. We enjoyed the grounds and meeting the garden staff (Very helpful and informative! They gave us some tips for our garden.)
The dishes on the regular dinner menu were fun to read and creative. Try the Bloody Mary Gum Drop. I still don't know how they captured that flavor in a gum drop.
Unfortunately, they weren't very creative with my request for a vegan menu. We let them know far in advance (twice). They have many vegetarian options, but nothing really outstanding or created for vegans. I've asked other restaurants if they could prepare a vegan meal and they have been very accommodating and created amazing dishes. So, after being assured that they would definitely accommodate my vegan request, I was excited to see what they would do.
Well, it was quite disappointing. They didn't do anything. The personalized menus are nothing more than the same menu given to everyone, but with your name printed on the top. Nothing customized for vegan. At tea, they served me crudite as the vegan option. Other teas (try Salamander or Rosemont Manor - where I have had inventive vegan scones, tea sandwiches and even ice cream!) I was also impressed at the Ashby Inn - when they personalize a menu, they only list the items that fit within your dietary needs.
We had a wonderful trip, because we always find things to enjoy. But, I don't feel a need to return. We actually canceled our 2nd reservation there. Just not worth the time, money, or trip.
