“A great weekend away during the off-season”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

My husband, infant (8-months-old) daughter and I spent a relaxing January weekend here taking in the ocean views and enjoying the peace and quiet. The staff was excellent and accommodating of our baby's needs; Rashawn, Shawna, and Nikki were particularly helpful, providing us with delivery menus, a highchair, and plastic tableware on our evening in.
We were somewhat disappointed when we arrived that our room wasn't ready - it was still waiting on fresh linens. Granted, we got there at 12:30 and check-in is at 4, but I'd e-mailed and called in advance to request an early check-in. The desk clerk was very helpful and recommended a lunch spot while we waited, so we wandered down the beach for some food. When we got back at 2, our room still wasn't ready; the desk clerk then pushed housekeeping to finish, and they said it would be ready in five minutes. This rush might explain why housekeeping put a queen-size fitted sheet on our king-size bed. That made my husband absolutely crazy all night, but it was rectified the next day. Housekeeping staff also were nice enough to set up a Graco portable crib that I'd requested. It was great not having to worry about bringing a pack 'n play, but the downside was that the hotel didn't provide a mattress for the crib; instead, they folded several sheets together and lined the bottom. My daughter moved around quite a bit and constantly pulled up the sheet, then cried when she bumped her head on the hard surface. Next time I'll probably bring my own pack 'n play.
Our room was on the 11th floor and had a spectacular view of the ocean. We were a bit nervous about being across from the elevator, but the hotel was quiet (with the exception of the occasional Gollum-like cough from a neighbor who sounded way too sick to be traveling; fortunately, good insulation muffled most of that noise). The layout of the room was terrific (we had a studio room with king-size bed). The bed and TV were separated by a small partition from a sofa bed and TV, making this an excellent arrangement for families with small children.
Apart from the very minor issue of waiting for our room, our only complaint was that the indoor pool was cold and dirty. We were excited at the prospect of taking our daughter to a pool for the first time, and even more excited when we saw how nice the pool looked through the lobby windows. Well, it looked pretty from a distance, but up close was another matter. The water was tepid at best, and there were small brown pieces of...something...floating in the water. We spent five minutes in the pool and got out quickly, disappointed that our daughter's first swimming adventure was in a bust.
On a brighter note, the weather was sunny and pleasant enough for walks on the beach. We also enjoyed visiting some of the local restaurants featured on the show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (I'd recommend Whitner's BBQ any day - yum!). We also got some great pictures of our little one at the aquarium. All in all, a fun weekend and very nice hotel!

We stayed 4 nights on the 6th floor overlooking the ocean (all rooms do). It was wonderful to wake every morning to a sunrise over the beach; we even saw dolphins feeding and pelicans flying by. Weather was mostly sunny & cold but warm enough to walk on beach. Every night to look out balcony at the Holiday Lights was amazing. Room was clean, staff very friendly, parking deck convenient, breakfast was good, typical Springhill Suites and dining area was plentiful. Did not utilize indoor pool but was very popular with families all hours of day & night. We like the suites hotels and this one did not disappoint. Our only issue was noisy small refrigerator; maintenance came right up and tried to fix it. Lasted few minutes, then he replaced the unit. Visited family in area, would stay here again but not during summer as rates are very high. Kudos to Marriott for another great hotel!

We stayed four nights in a one bedroom, end unit suite on the top floor for a special occasion. It was very clean, comfortable, and incredibly spacious. The furniture and carpet is a bit worn and could use an upgrade though! The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept very soundly due to the room being so quiet.

The best part about the room is the incredible view overlooking the ocean- it is truly mesmerizing. Even though it rained everyday we were there, we enjoyed just relaxing in the room looking at the ocean. We really appreciated the small kitchenette and enjoyed eating in for lunch and dinner a couple of days.

Breakfast each morning was consistently good and plentiful. Every staff person we encountered, especially Nikki Henderson, the Hotel Manager, was cheerful and welcoming.

We will definitely stay here again...thank you for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: Book a one bedroom suite on the top floor.

Our overall experience staying in this hotel was excellent! Room cleaning was fantastic and excellent room cleaning service by Judith. We've been a loyal customer of Marriott and we always enjoy our stay but this is the best experience we've had in terms of cleanliness and overall experience.

Booked this hotel through Marriott Rewards, had a very good rate for an oceanfront suite. Front desk staff was pleasant, check in was quick and effortless. We found the room to be super spacious and fairly clean. Doors were very dirty, I suppose from kids putting their hands on them. Pool area was very nice, although we didn't use it because it was full of kids in town for a soccer tournament.

I would recommend you stay here, but you may want to hit Starbucks or 7-11 if you want java because the hotel coffee is terrible.

On business in Norfolk for the last month -- I stayed Monday through Friday -- Every Monday, I was welcomed back by Jay -- greeting me by name -- when he saw me during the week he always went above and beyond asking if everything was okay and what he could do for me -- his customer service traits are most excellence ...

the hotel itself is great -- large clean rooms, quiet (especially in November/December) -- a great breakfast and the views of the oceanfront are great. Did not use the gym or the pool but they looked ... follow the path from the elevator to the boardwalk/ocean in seconds ... Highly recommend staying at this hotel as I will when I return for business or pleasure ...

Room Tip: I stayed on the 6th, 7th, 12th and 14th floor -- they all were great ... 2nd floor has larger balcon...

We flew out to Norfolk, VA from California to spend Thanksgiving with our grown daughters who live in Virginia Beach. We have stayed at SpringHill Suites on four (4) different occasions (celebrating High School Graduations, Nursing School Graduations, Retirements, and Holidays). It's always been our "Go To" place to stay while in Virginia Beach. The rooms are always large and spacious, allowing us room to move around in; very clean - big thanks to Vesela (our room attendant) for keeping it so clean, stocked with fresh towels, and lots of tissues as we all came down with colds during our stay. Since each room faces the Atlantic Ocean, the view is wonderful. We enjoy watching the waves crashing on the beach. Because of the holiday, the hotel was exceptionally crowded during the breakfast hours although the food staff tried to keep everything well replenished. See you next year!
