We just made it back and had a very good time. We were in the cottages that were closest to the beach. The outside needed painting, but we found the inside to be very clean and plenty of room for our family. We were very close to the boardwalk that takes you to the beach. It was very relaxing to have our very own beach and not having to deal with all of the hullabaloo at Virginia Beach. There were others there, of course, but not near the crowd that you would have at Virginia Beach. I would agree that service was not top notch. However, this is a government ran organization and one needs to keep that in mind. Also, I believe this facility was being run by the same parent organization as the ones who oversee Shades of Green at Disney. I know the operator who took my reservation was down at SofG. From what I understood, they are making the transition to be run by the same folks that handle the Navy housing in the area. This could be an improvement if management is local. We shall see.
Overall though, a very nice stay. We used the kitchen quite a bit. Just to make you aware, basic cooking supplies and plates are provided, but baking sheets, pot holders and dish rags are not. Being former Army, we adapted and overcame. Also, in our area, three condos shared one open grill. The grill is like you would see at a park and does not have a cover. Bring extra charcoal. This did allow me to get to know some of the navy representatives next door.
The units are in three unit modules, but the way they are built, you do not see the neighbors much. Your deck gives you privacy. I did not hear the neighbors. I don't know if they were quiet or if there was good sound proofing.
I do have to comment on the beds. I was ok, but my wife appreciates a soft bed. All of them appeared to be of a board like consistency. Be warned and maybe bring an air mattress if you need a soft mattress.
Like I said, my family of 5 had lots of space, lots of fun and overall, enjoyed ourselves. Not sure when we will make it back, but I know we will sometime.
