“Been coming here 20 years!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

I have stayed in every room aspect of the Cape Henry Inn for the last 20 years (even as a former VA Beach local!) - from the bungalows, cabins, to the inn itself. It's been a family tradition and never disappoints. This past year we brought all of our dogs and had the BEST time! The dog beach is absolutely wonderful and morning runs along the beach offer spectacular views of dolphins.
Keep in mind this is still a military base, so you must be respectful to those defending our freedom.

Made reservation a year in advance for the renewing of marital vows. Website shows beautiful new cottage on oceanfront, not so when we checked in. Old cottage w/no view of ocean, paint peeling off exterior, beds that were hard as concrete, toilets didn't flush properly, a/c quit working & had a cottage musty smell. Only 1 old tv in living room w/rock hard furniture. Staff was very rude, impolite & non-accomodating. Asked to be moved to another cottage when we brought luggage in cottage. Front desk staff said we could but had to call back in morning to talk to supervisor. Did just that & supervisor stated they were "booked". So just like the advertisement of cottage we were lied to again. Wasn't offered anything for our inconvience. Fortunetly, we have a timeshare in Va Beach & checked out & went there. Less $ per nite, beautiful 2 bed/bath w/full kitchen & flatscreen tv's in each bed/living room(s). Super staff & beach was a walk across the road. Will not recommend to anyone!

I am a low-key kind of person. I don't need a lot of to-do to be happy, so the fact that the Cape Henry Inn was so quiet was AWESOME! The first day of our trip we spent on Virginia Beach. It was Memorial Day weekend so of course it was crazy busy. When I realized that Cape Henry Beach in our own backyard had less than 100 people on it, its own showers, pool, snack bar, and rental equipment, I was so happy. We stayed in a typical Dune room, put the Do No Disturb sign on, and enjoyed the weekend. We had no issues with staff, amenities, or the beach. The only tiny drawback is that the one tv was located in the living room/couch area. I would have liked another tv so I could watch it from bed, as well.

Room Tip: There are no restaurants on site so bring a bag of groceries with you if you don't wish to leave...

Family spent mother's day weekend at Cape Henry two bedroom cabin. Walking distance to beaches. We have our own bonfire pit, picnic table and swing in the front patio. Enjoyed very much.

The cape Henry Inn was great because of its location. If it were not right on the beach i would give it an overall rating of three. The staff is friendly, but there didn't appear to. E enough of them. The room was quite large, but you couldn't see the tv from the beds. Also at night people from outside on the patio could see into my room, because they only had the light nylon curtain installed. The beach is right in front of the inn, and the beach on Dt Story is small and quiet.

I would stay there again because it is the cheapest way to stay on Va beach, but the resort itself is a clear step below the other armed forces recreation centers ( I have stayed at all of them now).

My Daughter and I spent two nights at Cape Henry. The morning of the first day, the receptionist was nice and accomodating. She booked our room and told us that she was going to call us when the room was ready for use. We spent the day out and upon our return the new reception was not so accomodating. However, the person that did the night shift, gave other guests the room we were already staying in. The guests tried to open our room door while we were there. We got quite scared that someone was trying to open our door. When I told them that this room was already taken, they apologized and went back to the reception. I called the receptionist only to see that she was very rude , not apologizing for her error. She blamed her previous colleagues of her error. And on top of it she was very amused with her error. She kept on laughing on her lack of professionalism and her terrible mistake. I only wish Cape Henry is aware of some of their unprofessional employees. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay and will come back.

My wife and I booked a cottage 3 months in advance of our stay, only to find out when we arrived that we would be staying in the Inn. The room we reluctantly took was clean, but simply wrong for us and obviously set up for the Handicapped; of which we are not - we are both extremely athletic and capable. The shower, though intended for less than stable persons (ease of entrance, hand rails, etc) was as slippery as standing on banana peels and due to its low wall entance, water spilled onto the bath floorm aking the entire bathroom dangerous. When we finally crawled into beed, we found we were sleeping on a heayy duty plastic mattress cover, which made noise at each movement and prevented us from having a good night's sleep. What's more, the TV was not connected, and when we called the front desk for help with the tube, they said they would send a maintenance man to fix it - he never ever showed, even though we complained 2 more times that evening. Oh, and regading their WiFi, they charge nearly $7.00 per hour. In all our travels since retiring from the Military, two plus years ago, we have never been charged for Wifi. This place is a nighmare and since it's Gov funded and operated, they don't really care about your stay, like say, privately owned Inns, hotels, etc. PS: though we were booked for two days, we left in the middle of our first night (1AM), because of all the problems we were suffering from and the Inn's staff inability, or interest, to resolve.

Room Tip: STAY AWAY and perhaps the Government will sell this facility to a private owner who gives a darn abo...
