“Return Vacation to Cutty Sark”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

May 30 - June 3

I vacationed at Cutty Sark back in 1997 with my family when I was younger. We stayed in the Cottage on the Corner of Atlantic and 37th St., definitely a vacation to remember and thought it was worth revisiting. This time we decided to stay in a Efficiency Room because it was just 2 of us. The room was perfect for what we needed. We decided to cook rather then dine out each day, which saved us so much money! Everything was so close and within walking distance, the car didn't move from our spot the whole stay. The Air Show was amazing to watch we were entertained each day. Overall was a great time and we will visit back soon! :)

My husband and I wanted to get away for a looong weekend and we happened to come across "Cutty Sark" during our Google search for places to stay. Right away we knew the location of the efficiencies were right on point of where we wanted to be located. You gotta love this place for the location alone-we were steps away from the beach, shoppes and so on; The Cutty Sark is situated right on the main strip of Atlantic Avenue off 37th Ave which is MUCH MORE quieter than farther up around 19-25th Avenues-which can be a nightmare (traffic-wise) with all the bars, restaurants and late night activity. The room we rented was quaint, clean and had everything the two of us needed during our stay. The bed was extremely comfortable and the balcony provided extra relaxation to just hang out and talk. Our visit was very quiet and comfortable - even the cleaning lady, (who's name I can't remememer now) was very courteous and accomodating. We hardly used the little kitchenette, but it was great to know we had the option to prepare a meal right in our room rather than go out to a restaurant. The bathroom was basic, yet very functional.

Before departing, one guest (who had checked out) asked my husband and I how we liked the room and while we were ecstatic and pleasee withy our accomodations, this guests responded that they were dissappointed and the building was too old and nothing was like what was expected based on the internet pictures and such. Well, you know what I say to that? If you're looking for a Five-Star Hotel then that's what you should book and stick with. Cutty Sark is priced competitively, but you get so much more for the money and I agree with the poster, WendyZT - this place is "intimate" and that's what we were looking for. The stay was a great experience and this is definitely on our list of favorite spots to stay in VA Beach. This a "Mom & Pop" family run business, so please support them-especially in this economy, where we're seeing a lot of the family businesses taking a dive up against bigger hotel franchises.

I would recommend th Cutty Sark to anyone (friends, family, etc) on a budget! We're pretty basic easy- going folks, so this place met, if not exceeded our expectations. Vacationers - book this place as fast as you can!! Cudos to the Koch Family and thanks for an awesome and restful weekend-we'll be back soon with the rest of the family!

Mr. and Mrs. Patton

Room Tip: Try to get one of the efficiency rooms with a balcony- the views are perfect

This is a real little gem of a hotel/motel. If you're used to luxury accomodations, this might not suit you, but if you enjoy something a bit more intimate, this is the place. Mrs. Koch and Jerry were great hosts, our room was clean and had all the appliances and dishes necessary for a comfortable stay of a week (wish it was longer!). The room was a great size for us and our two teenagers and the location was amazing, the best on the beach (the north end is quieter than the south end). From our balcony, we had a spectacular view of sunrise over the ocean, something you're not guaranteed when you stay at a huge hotel. It was so convenient to be able to park right beside the building and walk up a few outside steps to our room rather than traipsing through a hotel lobby in a bathing suit! The beach and boardwalk are just a few steps away. The Cutty Sark is not fancy, but it offers true value for money and really lets you take in the charm of Virginia Beach. We'd love to go back!

Room Tip: A large family might choose to stay in one of the Cutty Sark's historic cottages. There are sep...

The hotel is a little dated but it was very clean and had everything you would need to stay a few days (stove, microwave, toaster, pots/pans, silverware, refrigerator), The owners were very nice and were willing to accommodate to our needs and had great recommendations of where to go and what to do. It was worth staying here rather than spending twice as much at a different place. Next visit back to VA Beach I hope to stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the ocean view

Being on a budget, we were looking for something within the $100 a night range close to the beach. This MOTEL is a 30 second walk to the boardwalk. Literally just walk across the street and your toes are in the sand. We were on the first floor and had a fantastic view when we looked out our huge window, so I imagine most rooms would have a decent view. Our room faced Atlantic Avenue, but there was not noise from traffic and the road did not ruin our gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean. There is a larger hotel in front of the Cutty Sark that may block some room views, but the convenience and the rates are perfect, so our view was just a bonus! We arrived late Friday night, after midnight, and they had our lights turned on for us and keys available to pick up when we arrived. They made it convenient for us to check in the next morning which was nice. When we arrived, the A/C didn't seem to be working, and I wasn't sure about the room, but it was very spacious, very clean, had a mini fridge, coffee pot, microwave, couch, dresser, TV, stove and sink. It smelled a bit musty when we arrived, but I have asthma and am allergic to molds and I didn't have one asthma attack during our stay. The next morning we checked in and they were already working on the A/C issue and quickly had it resolved. The musty smell quickly went away - so it was probably just from the humidity. There is a heated pool that looked clean, although we did not get in. The grounds were kept nice. Parking is limited. Since we arrived late, we were't sure where to park and had to move our car in the morning, but each room has a parking space for one car which is conveniently located in the parking lot where you would walk into your room. The only downfall to our room was a small double bed, but even that ended up being quite comfortable. There was a washer and dryer outside of our room, and a soda machine - as well as access to WIFI. Since this is a Mom & Pop type establishment, and not a huge chain, I would say it was an outstanding place to stay. If you want luxury and plush accommodations - this is NOT the place for you. Stick with the big chain hotels. But if you are looking for a clean place to sleep with extra amenities, friendly staff and a place that won't empty your wallet, I highly recommend the Cutty Sark. When you first walk into your room you may think it is a bit outdated, but look at your glass half full. This Motel has a lot of charm and history -I'm sure. I would certainly recommend it to a vacationer on a budget who is looking for a charming, quaint, clean place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on either end of the motel so you have a gorgeous view!

Took a while to write this review. My family was to stay in late August before school started check-in on Thursday and out Sunday. Irene came blasting through Friday and Saturday. Cutty Sark told us Thursday they were staying open even though the Govenor had declared a state of emergency, which means no unneccesary travel into the state and told us no refund unless Virginia Beach declared mandatory evacuation, which according to the Virginia emergency website, they did. Mrs. J. Koch declared that the hurricane passed them by, that there were no evacuations and it was beautiful weather in Virginia Beach during Irene and we would have had a wonderful time. I believe the numbers were in the 100's of thousands of people without power and Mrs. Koch claims the weather was beautiful and that we would have had a wonderful time. She also stated that on Sunday the weather was quite nice...the sustaining winds on Sunday were 50 mph....enough for wind burn on the beach I'm sure. She has refused to give us a refund even after contacted by her Chamber of Commerce. Her only offer was for us to use our deposit towards another trip....I don't think I want to chance a stay at her hotel anytime in the near future. The Chamber of Commerce for Virginia Beach wrote us a letter telling us that they were sorry, that Virginia Beach really is a very nice place to visit and that they hope we won't let this deter us from visiting in the future. This was suppose to be my kids first trip to the beach...we live in central Pennsylvania, so a 4.5-5.5 hour drive into an unknown category hurricane was out of the question...especially when Virginia had issued the State of Emergency...and we would have quite possibly had to turn right back around and drive home in hurricane rains. Then when we started seeing all of the coverage on TV we knew we made the right decision...our kids would have been scarred for life having experienced that for their first trip to the beach. Beautiful weather...yeah right.

We are very sorry that this lady was so frightened by the overly ambitious news media that she
wanted to cancel her long held reservation. When she called here to tell us of her plans, we told her the truth when, we said the weather was beautiful and that they should come, that all beach activities were continuing. When Irene passed us by, miles to the East of us, all Beach activities resumed. I believe there was a sand soccer tournament, or surfing competition continuing on. I know it had to do with young people, we had some staying with us. We are situated on the East Coast of The United States. We have, sometimes, as many as 20 named storms that threaten us, but thru some miracle of exact location of our Resort City, we seldom get a direct hit. The same is not true of our neighbors to the South. They have so many mandatory evactuations that many Vacation Rentals, (Hotels and Cottages) require you take out Travel Insurance. We do not have that requirement because in the 50 years we have lived here, we have only had one Mandatory Evacuation of our Resort . Our policy on refunds is the same as the Travel Insurance. We make full refund when there is a Mandatory Evacuation. When a personal decision is made to not keep a reservation, we cannot make refund. That is a personal decision. Again, I am very sorry that this family chose to cancel their reservation.

My husband and I spent 3 nights here (Aug. 29- Sept. 1, 2011) right after Hurricane Irene went through. The motel is north of the busiest part of Virginia Beach, on the west side of Atlantic Avenue. We could see the ocean from our balcony on the third floor by looking on either side of the taller hotel directly across the street on the beach. The motel is older but clean and in good repair. The bed and other furniture were comfortable. The refrigerator was small but kept things cold. The owner was pleasant and welcoming. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Room 33 has a good view of the ocean and is on the third floor, but no elevator.
