“Lots of Steps”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

We stepped all the way to the top. You have to go on Ft. Story to get the lighthouse. Ft. Story is a military base, so you will have to go through a security check point that includes a complete vehicle inspection. be prepared. It's also $8 to walk up the steps to the lighthouse.

“Lighthouse fan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

A must see for anyone who enjoys lighthouses and American history. Worth the hassle of getting on base -make sure to have ins proof registration and dr lic. Guides were very informative and friendly. View from the top is splendid - make sure to go on down and check out the first landing site. Great pics of the old and new lighthouse together.

“What a View”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

The lighthouse is located on the Fort Story military base. Upon arrival to the lighthouse there is a small gift shop with unique & historical gifts. There is a short climb to the base of the lighthouse. At the base of the historical lighthouse you have a great view of the currently operated lighthouse and military base. The climb to the top is on a metal spiral staircase. Once at the top of the historical lighthouse you have a great view of the water and other areas of the military base.

“Old Cape Henry Light”

Have been going there for years and never get enough. Actually there is a new Cape
Henry Light just across the road. However, it is not open to the public. Joseph McDonough

“See our nation's birthplace just across the street”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2014

The Cape Henry Lighthouse is well worth the time and effort to see, photograph, and climb.

That said, remember that our nation's birthplace is a 10 minute walk away:

There is a small park located a short distance down the road and behind the modern black and white lighthouse.

A commemorative cross marks the site of where the first permanent English settlers set foot for the first time in the New World.

You will also see a plaque displaying a written account of the Battle of the Capes, the outcome of which assured future generations that we would not be speaking with British accents.

Wooden stairs leading to a beach overlook allows visitors to view where the action took place.

FYI @ comments regarding nonmilitary visitors requiring search + documentation. Remember, this is a active military base. You are guests of those who protect our coast + inland targets of interest such as the world's largest deep water harbor located upriver in nearby Norfolk, VA. Have your personal ID, car registration, and proof of insurance ready. Be prepared to exit your vehicle, open all doors, glove box, and center console; also, open your car's hood. Read and respect all written rules. Be appreciative of their service to our country and their hospitality.
