“Out of the ordinary”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

Although the ambiance is a bit stark, the food and service is quite good. We had the spanakopita appetizer, lentil soup, and the lamb kebob and chicken tawook wrap as entrees. All were very tasty. For dessert, the walnut baklava with Turkish coffe was just the right ending to the meal. We'll definitely go back to try more of their offerings.

“Best Falafel around!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Very simple place with good food for a reasonable price. Nice selection of food as well. My wife had the Kabob with Chicken and could get over how moist and favorable it was.

“Pleasant Mediterranean Cafe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

We hadn't been into Azar's at Hilltop for awhile, and stopped in for a late light dinner last Saturday, after driving each other crazy during 5 or 6 hours of Christmas shopping. What used to be primarily a market for packaged and some freshly prepared Middle Eastern foods is now primarily a small cafe serving an expanded selection of fresh vegan and meated dishes, still mostly of Mediterranean origin. The entire menu is available for takeout, and there is a cooler containing already prepared dishes --- as well as a good selection of their "famous" desserts --- if you're in a real hurry.

The cafe is decorated in a pleasant but little-bit sterile fashion, and works well as a place to stop in and get a quick bite (You know how some places are laid out/decorated/lit to be warm/inviting/settling, and some places are more clean/functional/sterile? Azar's is the latter.). Hostesses and waitstaff are also pleasant, direct and no-nonsense --- maybe the flesh-and-blood version of the cafe's functional motif? --- and we were quickly seated, beveraged and ordered. Our Falafel appetizer was served baked (they also offer it fried) with shredded lettuce, tomato, cucumber and Tahini; both the falafel and tahini were mildly seasoned, but good. We then shared a lamb wrap, which we found to be a little sub-par, primarily because most of the meat was tough and overcooked. Their homemade Tzaziki was excellent, but, unfortunately, it was probably the best part of the wrap. And the warming of the pita and the wrap itself was a little extreme for our tastes --- it seemed almost to have been toasted in an oven, rather than warmed. No dessert, and we were in and out in a little over a half-hour, spending $24.38, pre-tip, on our appetizer, wrap and one iced tea. Tummies filled, but that's about it.

So maybe we're just a little more spoiled now, in our likes and dislikes with Middle Eastern restaurants and cuisine --- another wonderful Middle Eastern spot has recently opened at Hilltop, and the old Azar's wraps just don't seem quite the same. But it's still a good spot to grab some vegan/GF, and, even though we didn't partake this trip, the baklava still looks scrumptious. But, if you're like us, you won't feel like tarrying for too long. Or maybe you'll just get the takeout.

“DELISH vegan burger and wrap...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

and the fries weren't shabby either! The vegan burger and wrap were absolutely outstanding! The stuffed grape leaves were ok...I've had better off the shelf at MOM's. All the tables quickly filled up due to a town event, and the atmosphere went from pleasant to terribly loud...so much so we had to raise our voices to be heard. I don't think the patrons were excessively noisy, but the construction of the dining area seemed to amplify the sound. Definitely worth a stop in, and we'll be back the next time we're in town!
