“Holiday Camping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

We've camped here a couple of times this past year. A couple of things kept this from being an excellent review. First the good: Location! If you're lucky enough to get a campsite on the bay (or beach) side, the views are excellent. You can look out on the Chesapeake Bay and see several large freighters at anchor waiting their turn to pick up cargo in the Hampton Roads ports. The sites are spacious with a fire pit and table. The bathhouses are for the most part clean, but it IS a beach and beach sand gets everywhere.
The not so good: Sand spurs!! The prickly burrs are a big nuisance and can ruin your outing. They are a huge problem for pet owners, both in their paws and fur.
The reservation system won't reserve specific sites in Virginia. You are guaranteed a site, that is, any site that is left. The park staff handling the campsites could be more friendly and accommodating. The staff at the visitor center and camp store were great! We never saw the 'camp host'. This person has a prime spot to camp in return for certain jobs they must do to 'pay' for their campsite. They should also serve as an 'ambassador' for the park. When we were there they needed a new ambassador.
Overall we had a good time and the location can't be beat! We'll be back.

Horrible reservation system! We ended up having to move campsites right at dusk. Park rangers we're rude. Even though we got there early to get close to a bathroom we still ended up out of walking distance from one. They told us the site we originally picked out had been reserved so we had to move. We checked the next morning and no one ever set up on that site. We offered to pay extra for the site because I am pregnant with twins and it was right next to the bathroom, but they said someone was waiting to get set up there. Ridiculous, I will not return there. Luckily, there are much better campgrounds in the area.

We book our campsite in March for a Labor Day Weekend stay. Campsites are assigned on a first come basis. Because were arrived late in the evening we had two sites left to choose from. We were beside a major four lane highway in Loop H -Site H30. The 6 person per site limit is not enforced here - leaving the bathhouses maxed out and filthy. We will be back in this area in March but booked a hotel instead of returning here. On a positive note the sites are shaded and well maintained. The staff is very friendly.

Room Tip: Arrive early to get a good site.

Virginia State Parks have consistently been ranked among the best in America, and First Landing State Park is probably THE most popular campground in Virginia. Located bayside just west of where the Chesapeake meets the Atlantic, First Landing State Park features SPACIOUS campsites of all types - primitive, water/electric, and full hook up. In addition to being spacious, it is shaded and most sites are very private! Because the campground is so popular, I would highly recommend making your reservation weeks if not months in advance. It is very unlikely that you will be able to get an open spot on a last-minute notice.

My husband and I got a campsite in June for father's day weekend, and my family was a few sites down on their own. For being so close to the craziness of Virginia Beach, the campground is very quiet and peaceful for the most part, and the beach was not crowded. At times it may not be as peaceful due to the fact that the campground is adjacent to Fort Story, a Navy base. It is not uncommon to be able to see and hear the military practicing beach assaults on their neighboring beachfront. Very cool!

The campground has a bike trail to the boardwalk at the main drag of Virginia Beach. I think the trail is a couple miles long, but easy for anyone in shape to conquer. Old Cape Henry Light House, built in 1791, is located in Fort Story. With a valid drivers license, the military guard at the gate will allow you on base to see the light house as it is open to the public. Keep in mind that your vehicle may be randomly searched when entering a military base, so make sure that the knives, axes, or any other "weapons" or tools you use at the campground are not in your car when you enter the base!!! It's only $3 to enter the light house.

Also on Fort Story is the marker which commemorates where the Jamestown settlers first landed in 1607 (hence the name of the campground!).

We enjoyed primitive camping about forty-five minutes from Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, VA. Nice beach area and super clean amenities...The park staff members were courteous and professional...Camping at its best! The park offers lots of tours and activities throughout the season...Reserve sites online.

This place is very silent and unbelievable to have inside a city. Try getting a camp site which is towards the beach side as camp sites within would seem a bit crowded. Its kind of weird that even after reservations you still have to find the empty camp site. Something the park officials should consider to add. Other wise this place is neat, clean and very well maintained.

We stayed in site H20 for 5 nights in late April/early May 2010. We had our dog and arrived early enough to pick from all the sites in the loop. We had privacy, easy access to the beach and bathrooms. We were able to attend a wedding - we took our wedding clothes to the dry cleaners the day we arrived. We booked our dog over night at the doggie day care center a few miles away for the wedding day and night. Having so may conveniences so nearby yet camp in wilderness was wonderful. You could hear the highway traffic but after 11 p.m. it died down - we slept like logs. The tree coverage in our site was perfect. There was a sunny spot big enough for our table and chairs. The camp store was good. The beach was empty and our dog was able to run like the wind for hours.

Room Tip: Loop H Site 20
