“Had a great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2004

We stayed at the Dunes from 8/8/2004 to 8/12/2004. After reading some of the negative reveiws, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. We had a very nice stay. The staff at the front desk were very courteous and helpful. Our room was great--comfortable bed, wonderful view of the boardwalk and beach from our balcony. The housekeeping staff was very good--no problems with linen supply, and the room was nicely cleaned every day. The elevators aren't the newest, but they worked without any problems. The double space parking in the main lot isn't ideal, but the one time we were blocked in, it took no time at all for the staff to move the other car. We will definitely stay here again. The only disappointment was finding out that the Golden Griddle was destroyed by hurricane Isabelle. We had eaten there on prior trips to Va. Beach, and found the food to be great, and the staff very pleasant.

We found this last minute and read a review that said it was ok, well do yourself a favor and skip it,there are tons of places to stay in Virginia beach that offer good rates. You get what you pay for.The beds were terrible, the room smelled like urine and the hallways were filthy.I have traved a great deal so I know a bad place when I see it.We checked out early!

On a whim, we decided to watch the fireworks over the ocean on July 4, 2004. We embarked on a long drive from Dayton, OH and arrived around 3pm on July 4. We thought we'd be able to find a cheap place to stay, but boy were we wrong. After countless phone calls and being stuck in horrendous traffic, it was either pay $150 for a flea bag hotel and sleep with roaches, or pay $210 for the last King Jacuzzi room on the 5th floor with ocean view this hotel had. We were VERY happy here. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were nice. The jacuzzi was clean and worked very well. The view was FABULOUS (perfect for the fireworks), the staff was ok (although we requested a late check out since the check out here is 11am, and were only granted a check out time of 11:30 - not very generous considering we paid them a fair sum of money for the night's stay). Everything seemed clean and well-maintained. The pool seemed small, but yet, who needs that with the Pacific Ocean at your door? The elevators seemed to work fine for us, and although the double parking seemed a pain, we found a spot easily across the street for free. Considering some places were charging $25 to park, this was great. We would definitely stay here again. Excellent location right on the beach and all the rooms have ocean views. However, I wouldn't want to be on the ground floor because the view is obstructed and I like a balcony. Personally, I would recommend the third floor and above for the best views of the ocean and the boardwalk activity.

Locks on back door would not lock. It took four times before lock was changed. Coffee pot had hair pieces all around it. Hair dryer also had hair sticking out of the back. It took two phone calls to front desk to receive extra linens. Bath tub was not cleaned after housekeeping came each day. Parking is not very accomadating and should be listed on website and all advertisements.

We had a very peaceful, comfortable stay at the Dunes. The front desk servants were very nice and professional. Our room was kept clean each day. We can't wait to go back there to stay again. We ate breakfast at Mary's Place, reasonably priced and good.

We usually stay at a hotel during sand soccer and Neptune Fesitval. Last year we stayed at the Dunes and really enjoyed our stay. The day of checkout, we were still in the playoffs and wanted to rest some. For some extra dollars, we extended our stay until 6 PM. It's a kid friendly hotel and the Golden Griddle restaurant has some of the best food.

Thanks for providing rooms, lobby, coffee, etc, when our bus broke down in your parking lot prior to our 9 am scheduled departure. You made the unscheduled stay of 51 AARP members quite comfortable until we finally got underway at 6 pm.
