We were both delighted to find what felt like a quaint country cottage so close to the sea in a large beach resort. Steve and Marie-Louise even took the trouble of hoisting the British "Union Jack" flag next to the Starts and Stripes to welcome us. The cottage was a delight with great attention to detail - chocolates in the hall, a fridge full of drinks and water, towels, chairs and boogie-boards for the beach. You could even borrow a bike! The room was pretty and comfortable but the big treats were rocking chairs on the porch at night and the breakfast experience! To sit at one table with the other guests is not something the reserved English do at B&Bs. However the mixture of home-cooked food and great conversation with the other guests and also with the owners made for a long, lingering morning meal. I think one breakfast lasted from 9:00 until 10:30! Great food, great fun and fantastic people Barclay seems to attract nice folk. A run before breakfast in the glorious sunshine along the 3 mile boardwalk with scores of runners and walkers helped to build up an appetite. There was a wealth of sound advice on where to go and where to dine and CDs & books to borrow. Nothing was too much trouble. A super place to stay for my first trip to the States and, although it is a long haul from UK, as your California Governor once said, "I'll be back!"

We have just returned from another wonderful stay at the Barclay Cottage, and it was just as delightful as our first-anniversary visit! Our room was comfortable and cleaned each day. They serve very scrumpous, homemade breakfasts. Mary-Louise and Stephen are very accommodating, worldly, and knowledgeable hosts, especially with a pregnant lady! We hope to visit again someday.

Steve and Marie-Louise have thought of everything to make it a delightful stay -- comfortable attractive rooms full of family treasures, rockers on the cool porches, bikes and towels for the beach, afternoon snacks, introductions to fellow guests in a friendly setting over a delicious breakfast. Nicely located in a pleasant residential area an easy two blocks from the hustle and bustle of VA Beach restaurants, swimming and boardwalk biking. Thanks!

Our weekend getaway to Virginia Beach to celebrate our anniversary was all the more wonderful because of our stay at Barclay Cottage. The inn was perfect -- nice size room (Alice's Room), comfortable bed and linens, and a superb breakfast that kept hunger pangs away all day! We never ate lunch during our entire stay because the breakfast was so filling. Our hosts, Steve and Marie-Louise gave us guidelines on all the local places to eat and visit. To top it off... complimentary beach towels, chairs, umbrella and boogie board. Ahhh... sipping wine on the 2nd story porch as you watch the world go by. I could go on and on.... a wonderfully relaxing stay. Thank you, we'll be back! ~~S. Banks

Ah, yes. Rocking on the porch, sipping wine, watching the world go by. That's one wonderful way to enjoy a few days away from the rat race! We look forward to your next visit and thanks for reviewing us.

We stayed here during the week of July 4th. We selelcted Barclay Cottage due to overwhelmingly postive reviews left on Tripadvisor about the place. I am very happy to say that we also had a great stay here. The place is impeccably clean, the room ("Lillian's Room") though just a little small, was comfortably decorated and had a very inviting feeling. The bathroom was great and even had a nice spa tub. Little touches made the place feel like home - things like a fridge in the hallway with complimentary bottled water and soda, cookies set out on a tray, and even the CD clock radio by the bed with the assortment of relaxing CDs. Also, the complimentary bikes, beach chairs and umbrellas were very much appreciated. The hosts/owners Stephen and Marie Louise were very nice. When we arrived, Stephen gave me his cell # in case I got lost around town and needed someone to call -- a nice touch. The inn is just 2 blocks (5 min walk) from the beach so the location was perfect. They've got a nice wrap around porch which provided a peaceful break in the action. We even sat up there on July 4th and watched the fireworks that the town launches up over the beach. So long as this place continues to be run by Stephen and Marie Loiuse, we will stay here again without hesitation the next time we go to Virginia Beach.
