“No Frills Pleasantry”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2010

Pleasant from the moment you arrive. Front desk staff helpful. No frills room-clean and well maintained. Free breakfast-continental and well stocked. Cleaning staff -prompt with requests. Pool looked clean and maintained. Had free bicycle use, didn't use this opportunity ourselves. Refig, microwave in good working order. Balconey view-excellent!

Modestly priced but excellent value-added and all in all a superior operation! Staff offers high quality gracious service, attention, patience, cordiality and good will. They're highly competent, highly motivated and extremely polite, fully interested in making your stay entirely enjoyable.

Rooms are pleasant if not a bit dated (they're in the process of renovation). Beds are fine. Microwave is standard but the larger fridge is great for storing a bunch of snacks, drinks, sandwiches or whatever which require refrigeration.

Excellent ocean views from the balconies, although the plastic furniture needs updating. Large heated pool is fine as are lower and upper decks (with convenient picnic tables) for sunbathing.

Continental breakfast is also fine --bagels, cream cheese, juice, cold cereals, etc (no eggs or waffles, but the coffee is great) and if you need a more substantive breakfast, try Angelo's next door. (Avoid Angelo's for anything other than breakfast...dinner service is slow and indifferent, as is the food.)

Leonard and Art, the managers, are experienced hoteliers and a have in-depth knowledge of the area and its venues. Other desk staff are also helpful. Try Tau Togs (a short walk) for seafood. The Jewish Mother (also a short walk) for some of the best corned beef or brisket sandwiches west of the Hudson and south of DC, Rockafeller's (on Rudy's Inlet) and Ammo's (on the pier) for Greek fare as authentic as what one finds in Athens.

The 27th street hotel location is a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown, which was fine for us...but there's still plenty of "action" for the kids. For older "kids" try the Hilton bar and restaurant., just up the street from the Econo Lodge. Additionally, the Hilton has an upscale reservations only business dress code casual restaurant which serves steaks on a par with New York's best and service to match. With wine and tip, expect to pay a minimum of $225+, for two... which is really not bad by comparitive standards. (Tau Togs, although seafood oriented, serves excellent steaks for much lower prices as well.)

If you're looking for a large fancy hotel, this is not the one for you. But, if you're looking for a clean and friendly hotel, I highly recommend this one. My family stayed there Sept. 17-19th 2010. I booked with this hotel solely on the recommendations from Tripadvisor.com. I was pleasantly surprised. I will surely stay there again. Just beware of one thing...the parking lot only has room for 1 car per room. They are really packed in, but there was always an employee assisting with parking, which was invaluable for a parking lot of this size.

I highly recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Virginia Beach. We stayed in April and although it was a little chilly for the beach, this hotel really made our trip with the bicycles! Also, the pool was kept clean and warm, so we still got to swim. The staff was SO FRIENDLY! Everyone we encountered was more than willing to help us with anything we needed. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 on the rooms is because the walls are a little thin, but to be right on the beach and have a wonderful private balcony overlooking the Atlantic (which was wonderful for breakfasts watching the sunrise) is great. A++++!

There were four of us on this trip that stayed at the econo lodge on the ocean. We were pleasantly surprised. The location was right on the beach with rooms facing the ocean.
The continental breakfast had a variety of items that were well stocked and kept neat and clean. The staff was helpful but not well informed as to location of restaurants and
information concerning some restaurants in the area. Excellent location. Would stay
here again.

The rooms are ocean front, spick and span clean, balconies to watch a beautiful sunrise, free bike usage to ride the boardwalk, friendly helpful staff, Wi-Fi, reasonable rates and the beach right out your front door!
Thank you Tripadvisor for the hotel reviews as they were accurate in their appraisal of the Econo Lodge on the Ocean. We will recommend this hotel to our family and friends!

After reading other reviews on this location, we decided to stay here instead of a pricer hotel at the end of the boardwalk. We were VERY pleased with the location, beach front balcony, free bike use (love this amenity), friendly English speaking staff and housekeeping was great. Front desk called to see if we needed anything about 20 minutes after checking in. Older hotel, clean w/micro & fridge, coffee maker. Nice pool area for socializing. Keep in mind, no elevator but only 3 stories. Nice continental breakfast and free coffee all day. Yes, we will stay here again.
