“a peaceful and unique nature gem!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

Back Bay is a uniquely beautiful place to enjoy sand dunes, wildlife, the beach, ponds, and the natural beach! It was fun to see various turtles, pelicans and other birds, cottonmouth snakes (eek! at least they stayed in the water so we could safely enjoy them from a distance), and search for tracks of wild hogs, horses or other wildlife. Plan at least half a day there and bring sun protection! It's definitely worth a visit because of its peaceful and natural beauty! There are worthwhile tram tours on select days (see their website for details).

It's 30-40 minutes from the Virginia Beach town center but depending on the season, you may find out about picking corn, strawberries, or grapes in the Pungo area along the way.

“Naturally Beautiful Treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Back Bay NWR is located in Virginia Beach, VA which is Virginia's largest city. Not far south of the tourist filled oceanfront you will find a beach you have only ever imagined. On the beach you see nothing but the scenery, ocean and wildlife. No condos, no beach cottages, no hotels, and no roads. Except for the annoying Carolina people who have grandfathered beach driving permits and ocassional ranger, there is nothing to see but nature. Lots of birds and animal noises. There are nature trails where you can walk through what this area looked like before people. If possible, bring a bicycle and you can ride on the beach all the way to the Carolina line. As previously mentioned, there is a fee during the summer to enter unless you have a National Park Pass. Someone said they cost $10, but that is not exactly true. National Park Passes cost $75 per year and can be used by 2 people. IF and only IF, you are over 65, then the passes are $10. Best bargin going for seniors because these passes are good at every National Park. While in VB, take a ride south on Genral Booth, turn onto Sandbridge Road and follow it to the end.

“Go to Back Bay Wildlife Reserve!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Six of us piled in the car and spent the afternoon exploring the grounds. The admission cost is $5 per car...so one of the few bargains in virginia Beach. Be sure to bring sunblock, bug spray and comfortable shoes (flip flops are fine too). There are trails through the wildlife preserve and also trails through the dunes to the beach. We saw frogs, nutria, cooton mouth snake, birds, fish...had a lot of fun. For bikers, this is a must do. $2 to enter on bike or foot.
