“Great lunch stop”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

After a morning of bird watching, we were hungry for lunch. Since it was a beautiful, sunny day here in Virginia, people were out and about and lunch stops were very busy. We had passed the Barn Door BBQ earlier in the day and thought it could be a good lunch stop--and it was. They had two styles of BBQ--North Carolina and Texas, along with ribs and BBQ chicken, with a selection of side dishes--potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, mac and cheese. The platter comes with a main dish and choice of two sides. The portions were very generous, the food very good, and the service fast and cheerful. There aren't any tables anywhere, but next door is a concrete foundation just right to sit on. It looked like most people were getting their food to go, but we decided to take "a seat" and enjoy the sunny day. The BBQ operation is inside the Upperville General Store and is open seven days a week. The BBQ operation offers a catering service as well.

“Exploring Sky Meadows State Park and Pick-Your-Own-Fruit farms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

Exploring Sky Meadows State Park and Pick-Your-Own-Fruit farms and found this wonderful little BBQ place in Upperville, VA. Amongst more expensive dining options within 100 yards, this is a value-laden alternative. This is a carry-out place and a little grocery housed in a very small building (perhaps a former gas station?). They also cater. The downside: there is no seating. One could find a spot on the curb outside, but a better option is to head to a local park for a picnic.

Menu is hand written on the board - and service provided at the counter. The offerings include smoked BBQ beef and pork as well as ribs and a number of other hot foods (including chicken and pizza). The beef/pork is offered with choice of sauces: North Carolina (vinegar-based), Texas (tomato-based), and Texas sweet. My wife tried the smoked brisket sandwich with cheese (no sauce)- wonderful flavor, smokey, tender, and very tasty - could be enough for 2 people. I had a BBQ beef sandwich with Texas sweet sauce. The meet is cooked with the sauce which may turn off some people - I really enjoyed it. Added slaw (meh - next time I'll order the beans). Sandwich and slaw: $5 ...great bargain! Hot veggies were OK, but don't think I'd order again. Pie slices, corn bread, and a few other things offered.....didn't try them though. The grocery offered sodas and other drinks - including some specialized sodas I've never seen before. Pretty cool.

The country-store atmosphere, tasty food, and bargain prices make this a great hidden gem.
