“Upscale, small town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

We found this restaurant by chance and were surprised at the upscale atmosphere and quality of food located in the small town of The Plains, VA. The restaurant's food and service are more typical of a large city. We had pasta and seafood, both were excellent. The wine selection was good and the service was outstanding. Given the location the menu is pricey, but worth it for a special occassion.

“Underwhelmed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

We had been referred here by several people. The atmosphere was was ok. The food was average. We have had much better Italian food elsewhere. And, our creme brûlée was over cooked.

“Ity was better in my high school cafeteria”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

Last night we met good friends at Girasole, an Italian restaurant in The Plains, not far from Middleburg. The weather was beautiful and the place was packed. We had a nice table outside.

The restaurant was clearly understaffed for the large crowd. It took something like 45 minutes to receive or initial drinks order and perhaps another 30 before the starters arrived. The heirloom tomato salad was wonderful, but the mussels in white sauce were very disappointing. Those two items covered five of the six of us for starters.

Three of made the mistake of ordering veal scallopini. It was awful. The slices were not thin; they were the size of small hamburgers and so filled with gristle as to be difficult to chew. As there was no taste beyond the gristle, it didn't really matter. My wife had two bites; I ate about one-fourth of mine. The other person who ordered it ate perhaps as much as I did. With virtually no outside lighting it was difficult to see, but the "sauce' on the veal resembled burned ketchup. There was some sort of tasteless hush-puppy looking item on the plate; I don't know what it was but it was not worth chewing either. A waitress noticed we'd eaten virtually none of it and was very apologetic and offered to fix us something else; but by that time we were two hours into this visit and really didn't want to wait any longer.

Our entire visit with our friends -- two of whom were from out of town -- was further damaged by the ear-piercing "singing" of a young woman warbling into a microphone. Conversation was limited as a result. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating, but hurried and harried.

My wife and I had not been to Girasole in several years, as our last time there was also disappointing -- and very expensive for what it was. This will be our last trip to this overpriced, understaffed, and extremely indifferent eatery.

“Simply excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

A very large menu with multiple complicated and specialized ingredients had me wondering how they use it before spoiling since only two parties were dining there on a Sunday evening and the location seemed remote. Very expensive but great food. I rarely order gnocchi because most places serve heavy, lumpy, gummy gnocchi that is tough to digest. These were light as a feather in a delicate sauce with many wild mushrooms. May agree with another poster that the use of salt was a tad bit heavy. Worth traveling to and the owner seemed very attentive.

“what a lovely garden and Sunday brunch served at table”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This restaurant has a lovely garden, with beautiful flowers and a fountain. Gardenias were in bloom right next to our table. The service was very good and attentive. Loved the smoked trout and the heirloom tomato salad. Great crusty breads too.
