I can't say enough good things about the Sugar Tree Inn. My boyfriend and I went for my birthday and stayed two nights. We purchased the wine package and were greeted by Becky and Jeff (the owners) when we arrived with a wine and cheese buffet. The wine was from a local vineyard and the cheese was delicious! Becky and Jeff are wonderfully warm people and incredibly easy to talk to. We stayed in the Blue Ridge room, which is in the furthest out building (a minute's walk to the main house), and I highly recommend it. It was cozy and had a large shower and excellent Aveda products and the bathroom was sparkling. Our room included a large deck with two comfy chairs that looked out on the forest below. We watched the sunset both nights! The bed was extremely comfortable and there was plenty of space to lounge around. We went to Gerdie's (a local country store) for dinner the first night and had pulled pork bbq sandwiches. The patrons and owners of the store could not have been nicer or more hospitable. The next day after delicious omelettes, fruit and fresh muffins we climbed to the top of Crabtree Falls, which is about 20 minutes from the inn. We didn't even need to eat lunch as we were still so full from breakfast. There is also a great vineyard nearby (Rockbridge), which had much better whites than reds, but again the owners could not have been more hospitable. We also saw the world's first wheat reaper, an herb garden, a restored mill and an early 19th century home (all within 15 minutes of the inn.) That evening we dressed up and joined the 14 other guests for an incredible four course dinner (I had quail, a house salad with homemade dressing, a delicious chocolate cake, and chilled peach soup) prepared by their young chef who is going off to cooking school in Cali, which was served along with a wine tasting. We had the privilege of trying four wines from a Charlottesville vinyard, and they were all explained by the vineyard's sales manager who stayed at the inn overnight and answered all of our questions! The next day we awoke to a great buffet brekfast (the sausage was to die for) and headed out to explore Lexington (which is about 30-40 minutes away.) It was a magnificent experience and one I won't soon forget. You must try the Sugar Tree Inn!

The location is terrific. It is in the mountains, with a beautiful view. Unfortunately, this makes it a little difficult to get to. The small road leading down to the inn is full of switchbacks and hairpin turns, but that just makes it more of an adventure. The innkeepers are friendly and the food is good. Our bed was the softest and most comfortable I have ever felt.

Very romantic room , decor and all.(Goshen Pass). Much nicer than shown in photos. Remote location, great for hiking and relaxing. It is a little drive to see other things in the area, but so what! Breakfast was homeade and delicious. A very country hot breakfast. The owners and help could not have been nicer! A wonderful place to visit for a quiet romantic weekend!!!!!

We stayed here several yrs ago. The inn now has new owners and hopefully the dining experience has improved. The inn consists of a main bldg- our room was the Wildflower Suite in the main bldg- very spacious with a bathtub and no curtain in the corner- open and exposed to the rest of the room. The room was very nice if the bathtub situation doesn't bother you. I can't remember if there was also a shower in the bathroom or if the tub was the only bathing option. In addition to the main bldg there are some other bldgs- kind of like duplexes 100 yds away. The location is off the beaten path. There isn't a town of Steeles Tavern- just a cross roads. The inn is kind of nestled part way down a hill so views aren't long range but of the tops of some ridges. There's a nice big open front porch with rockers (not much in the way of views) and we met some nice guests. My main gripe was the required (?) purchase of dinner. The food was quite mediocre (frozen tortellini was the vegetarian option one night) and the owner had the irritating habit of coming around to each table mid meal and saying "Well?.." It was like being in someone's house, of course you weren't going to complain. Everything at breakfast was sweet - muffins- no plain breads and even a fruit salad which was bizarrely sweetened with honey.
A few yrs ago the only other dining option close by that we knew of was a truck stop.
The inn's location is good for touring Skyline Dr and wineries.
I can't recommend unless the food has improved or more dining options have become available in the vicinity- at night on the dark and twisty mtn roads you don't want to drive far.
I hope the new owners have explored some local food sources like seasonal fresh berries and tomatoes and farm raised trout. It doesn't have to be gourmet to be good.

I am the new owner of The Sugar Tree and can assure everyone the dining experience has improved... vastly. We offer an excellent four course dinner in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.. the only thing we serve that is purchased frozen is the ice cream.
The Wildflower suite (actually the Sugar Tree Country) does have a 'jacuzzi' in the bedroom, which most of our couples enjoy as it affords a nice view of the woodburning fireplace. It does have a shower in the bathroom.
Both the Washingtonian and Hampton Road magazines featured us in 2004.
Come try us... you won't be dissapointed!
