“The most romantic place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2008

First I`ll start by saying "We travel alot"
When we arrived at the Sugar Tree we immediatley felt like we`d been there before. That`s because within a minute we were in the kitchen with the owners discussing the dinner menu for my wife`s limited diet.
Chef Jeff was very accomadating.
The hospitality was warm and friendly, and the food was delicious.
The charm and location of the inn is among our favorite places to visit.
The personalities of the owners and wait staff was gracious and warm.
You`ll leave feeling like you made some good friends.
We did meet some other wonderful people there as well.
You can feel the love when you walk through the door.
The close proximity to the parkway makes it very convienent.
We highly reccomend the Sugar Tree Inn.

My husband and I had a lovely stay at Sugar Tree Inn Oct. 19-21. We felt welcome and relaxed as if visiting friends, even though we had just met Jeff and Becky Chanter, the owners. Our room, Tye River, was cozy and comfortable, especially the bed. The towels were thick and fluffy and wonderful linens are on the bed.

Becky serves a delicious hearty homemade breakfast that will give you the energy needed to hike Crabtree Falls Trail. They throw corn out for the deer in the morning so you can watch them through the huge glass windows while you are eating. Fortunately a casual dinner is offered on weekdays so you are saved the trip into town. It was a very good spaghetti/meatball meal, complete with salad, hot bread, and dessert. The meal was hearty and plentiful.

My husband forgot our camera and fortunately the gift shop sells disposable cameras so we could take pictures of the beautiful fall foliage.

We actually had a better night's sleep here than we did at our next stay at a supposed "5-star mountain lodge" that sits near House Mountain outside of Lexington. We wholeheartedly recommend a stay at Sugar Tree Inn for a quiet retreat.

The Sugar Tree Inn is a beautiful getway location in the awesome Blue Ridge Mountains. We stayed there 10 years ago and fell in love with the location, the accomodations and the owners. Fortunately, the location and accomodations remain top notch. The owners, however, are another story. Because of them, we will not return. There were many problems but the main one was their lack of caring and unwillingness to offer us the friendly service we are used to from the many inns we have frequented over the past 20 years. The owner, Jeff, acted like we were disturbing him when we checked in on Thursday afternoon. He told us the room was "upstairs" and gave us no further information. When my husband asked about the keys he looked annoyed and said "we don't lock up here"...a very unwelcoming feeling for sure! We had problems that night with the heat and it turned out the thermostat was broken. We have dealt with these problems in the past, no big deal, but were told by Becky, the owner, that is probably our fault since we had the fireplace going at night!! Duh!!! We had the fireplace going to keep warm! Nothing was taken off of our bill, not even a free glass of wine for the inconvenience.
We were relaxing on the porch with a glass of wine with several other couples when "chef Jeff" informed us we couldn't drink our own wine on the property, only in our room!! I checked with another innkeeper in the area and there is no "law" other than the ones the innkeepers made for themselves to make more money on selling their own wine.
I guess they were upset with us because they didn't even prepare our fireplace the final night we were there.
If they sell the place, we will go back because it is beautiful but as long as Jeff and Becky are the owners, we will not be back!!!

In the interest of public civility, my only response will be that my enforcing Virginia ABC laws obviously did not sit well with them. Furthermore, they should consult with the Virginia ABC board, not another innkeeper, if they are interested in what the laws are. The laws are clear, and my ABC agent has made it equally clear that he enforces them.
We are sorry they did not enjoy their stay!

Great location, fine food and great innkeepers who could not have been more helpful. Our accommodation was away from the main house and to be honest was a bit disappointing. It was all clean enough inside but old and poor quality furnishings; the deck had not been swept or cleaned in a long time.

Also it was impossible to sit and enjoy the porch on the main house because of the bizarre decision to retain a nest of bees right outside the front door. A bee keeper could have had these bees moved to a hive in no time.

We stayed here about 11 years ago and decided on a return visit over the Labor Day Weekend. We chose to have dinner on Sat. night. What a fabulous meal! although a little pricey $35/pp still inexpensive compared to restaurants where you can get a gourmet meal. I chose the Mahi Mahi with encrusted with pineapple and my wife had the beef tips. I don't normally order Mahi Mahi in a restaurant as it tends to be too dry for my taste - even when cooked a little rare. This was the best I'd ever had! My wife loved the beef tips as they were outstanding as well. Breakfasts were equally as good especially the baked Oatmeal. Those of you who don't like it need to try it and then you'll be a believer.

It was great to see the deer grazing out the window as we were dining - both breakfast and at dinner times.

The hummingbird feeders on the front porch are also a great way to watch the local wildlife while relaxing and enjoying the views of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mtns.

We took a trip over to Rockbridge Winery after a morning of climbing Crabtree Falls - which is a must see and do.

The Winery was having a local band that played a variety of folk and Irish tunes - all of which were real foot stompers. I think the wine helped a little too. I must say Rockbridge Winery has some of the best wines in Virginia!

Jeff and Becky were the best of hosts and always around when you need them or have a question.

A secluded out-of-the-way, yet, close-in B&B

Very friendly hosts who took our little short vacation and turned it into a wonderful delight.

Food was good (need more rolls) and the wildlife (the numerous hummingbirds were a bonus!) was very interesting. Scenery and views were astounding. Really had a great time !

Our bed was VERY COMFORTABLE and we look forward to visiting again.

My husband and I have stayed at the Sugar Tree Inn twice and on both occasions it was on Valentines weekend. The place is perfectly romantic. On our second trip it snowed about 6 to 8 inches overnight! The inn keepers are OKAY. But we don't go to meet and become friends with innkeepers. We actually haven't been back in two years because of the bad taste left in our mouths from our last trip. Again the place is absolutely perfect for a romantic getaway and the food is EXCELLENT. However, the lady owner punched in our debit card number wrong and told us that our card was declined when we paid on the last day. I told her that was impossible (because it was impossible!) and she didn't want to run the card again! FINALLY she did it with a *sigh on her face and the an expression that read "I know this card is still going to be declined" but OF COURSE it went through. We are a young couple and I guess she assumed that we are a bunch of bums or something. I have no idea what she was thinking but my husband and I were very embarrassed over this exchange. She did apologize to us. This is the only reason that I don't give the place an excellent rating. Anyway, we are going to go back to the Sugar Tree this Valentines if they have availability because we really loved the PLACE that much. I told my husband that I just can't stay away! Two years has been too long!

Hmmmm... not quite sure what to say... as you can see from our other reviews, this obviously is not Becky's (the "lady owner") normal demeanor. We certainly hope these folks come back and give us another chance,,,, We know they will be glad they did!
