“Staunton - a great place to stop after skyline drive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

We stayed at the Howard Johnson in Staunton after touring the Skyline drive, Blue Ridge mountains etc of Virginia.
OK, so it's not a top quality motel. The breakfasts are not brilliant.
However, the swimming pool is great, the staff are kind and considerate. The room was cleaned every day. The free trolly bus stop is just nearby if you want a tour of the town complete with comentary.
The rooms are cheap, just $58. But the outstanding thing about the place is the position. It is safe. There is a huge car park (free). It is within easy walking distance of town, in fact it is in town and there are plenty of good restaurants and variety from Italian to a highly rated Indian. It is a mini gourmet town. There is the Copy Shakespearian theatre. A copy Anne Hathaway cottage. A cinema and lots of little museums and businesses. It is within easy driving distance of many other locations, as it was originaly a major rail head terminus, before the Americans fell in love with the car. The town is small town America but with decent architecture and a nice comfortable welcoming feel about it. We ended staying five days before struggling on to the despertion and extremes of Washington,( which we instantly regretted. )

We stayed at the HOJO in Staunton Va for a short trip to celebrate a great friend's wedding celebration. We were there June 22-24, 2012.

We were very concerned about the reviews, as usual, and once again, totally proves that some people just don't get it! This place is so friendly and just a great place to stay!

The HOJO is the only chain hotel (and the only place with a gorgeous pool) in the downtown section of Staunton and is central to everything. You don't need your car, just walk and enjoy the gorgeous cobblestone streets, the incredible 18th and 19th century homes and churches, the view, and the quaint yet up and coming place to visit! To be honest, the streets are not condusive to driving as there are many one way streets and it gets a bit confusing...Much better on foot! From the hotel, very easy access back to the highway and to I-81. Gas is about 30 cents cheaper than our Northern Va area and that was great for fueling up again before heading home!

Check in took less than 2 minutes. 64.00 per night. Front desk is amazing and knows everything about the town and will provide a map and help you out at any time! If you forget any amenities, all you have to do is ask, they provide toothbrushes/paste, razors...pretty nice thought! And this is a homey style hotel. They provide free pool towels! They also provide free newspapers, plenty of brochures and guides for things to do in the area. A continental breakfast is provided each morning and is standard bread/pastry/toaster waffles/cereal and coffee/juice/milk. They have a nice little dining area to eat in. Every floor has a great ice machine and soda/snack machine. The pool is large and gets sun all day and eve...delightful on a hot sunny day...we loved it! Smoking allowed at the pool!

Hotel is 4 stories tall, elevator is quick and spacious. Rooms look to the parking lot/road or pool with a view that is lovely! 4th floor is the smoking rooms. We stayed in a standard King facing the road. The room was spotless and large. Coffee maker w/ coffee and tea, Hair Dryer, and iron/board provided as well. Our king size bed was clean and very comfortable, plenty of pillows and blankets. AC would blast you out! Quiet area, no loud partyin, even though the hotel was filled each night! There is a Hardee's across the street, and a Chinese restaurant in the parking lot. They also have lots of menus at the desk if you want to order in...I might suggest Shenandoah Pizza which is a favorite of the locals....it was delicious! The hotel is pet friendly as well!

On Saturdays during the summer, down by the Train Depot is a spot called The Wharf where they have a farmers market. They sell breads, pies, cookies and brownies, cakes, vegetables, flowers and grass fed beef, honey, preservative free chicken and eggs. It was fun to walk around with a coffee from the shop at the store right at the market. Pet friendly as well. Plenty of parking or again, just amble on down a few streets and enjoy!

There are numerous places to eat and several bars down around W. Beverly which seems to be the strip where the most action is! They actually have several top rated singers play from time to time....Dave Wilcox played on Friday night when we were there and several rock bands were playing Saturday night as well. I do need to put a plug in for a hometown buddie there, Danny Dolinger who plays often in town....I don't know exactly where he plays but he is not to be missed! There is also a Shakespeare Theatre which draws a big crowd and is one of the reasons this town has come back to life after several years of poor economy. The venue we were at for the wedding celebration is called the American Hotel, which is not a hotel any longer but is a venue for reunions, weddings etc...Amazing facility, great architecture and they put up a fantastic time for all of us! The catering was delicious!

So, I must say, that our first trip to Staunton was amazing and we will surely return...We started thinking about taking the train from DC to Staunton for a weekend just for the lazy ride in the bar car...I checked out Amtrak and was 128.00 RT for the two of us. I was bummed it didn't go out of Fredericksburg, which is close to us but what the heck...my husband has never been on a train and the views through the mountains on the tracks would be amazing!

Visit the HOJO, you won't be sorry!

Best wishes TA friends!

The Howard Johnson was convenient in terms of location to historic Staunton, and did have free parking and wifi which was an added bonus. The room was large and comfortable with tv, coffeepot, iron, mini-refrigerator and even a microwave. However, there were some drawbacks in that a non-smoking room was not quite non-smoking. The room definitely had the smell of smoke in the room. While sheets appeared to be clean, there were some marks on them which was not appealing at all. Room was superficially clean but when searching for an outlet in the back of the bed, there was definitely cobwebs and dust hiding in the back.

The hotel was very clean and the employees were very friendly, especially Matt at the desk and Bob, the manager. The rooms were clean, the lobby welcoming and the pool beautiful. It was within walking distance of the downtown, which made it very convenient. I do not expect five-star at this price point, but everything met my expectations and would stay there again.

It comes down to that you get what you pay for, so at $69/night you get this motel with minimal amenities. There was a door that connected to the room next door that seemed like someone had tried to kick down, because the latch was quite like it would almost open with a firm shove. The shower height came up to about my shoulders, so I had to point the water stream up to wash my hair and still contort myself to complete the job. The water was nice and hot though. The towels were like thin sandpaper. The bed was not too bad and the a/c worked fine. The breakfast consisted of a juice and coffee machine, some loose cereal dispensers, and a few muffins. We saw later that the backside of the building there was a large pool. The hotel was situated in downtown Staunton with a Hardee's right across the street. The Mill Grill was about 10 blocks away and a few minutes drive. See separate review for that restaurant.

Room hint: room 320 is where the elevator goes up, so if you don't want to walk too far, request a room in the high teens or low twenties.

Overall, it seemed clean and generally safe, and served the purpose of sleeping and a quick shower.

There is absolutely nothing fancy about this motel. The rooms have exterior doors. The continental breakfast is just that - hot beverages and a small selection of breads and pastries. Aside from the decent selection of cable channels and the very reliable free wifi, this place takes me back to the fifties. But what's wrong with that? My room was quite clean; the desk personnel were friendly and helpful; and the price was right. And the hotel is within an easy walk of most of the city's attractions and its excellent restaurants. A budget-wise alternative that treats travellers with dignity.

Room Tip: It would probably be wise to avoid rooms close to the elevator shaft.
