This motel is great for one night when you are traveling and need a decently-priced place, especially after a long day of travel. I had done some research on tripadvisor first, as I really wanted to stay in Staunton as a road stop, having started the day in Rhode Island on a trip that would land me still about another 5 hours south of Staunton the next day. I remember some of the reviews saying it may not be the best place to look at from the outside, but the rooms are nicely decorated and updated, and that is all true.
I've already provided feedback to through the link I received in an email from Red Roof Inn following my stay, and am pleased to report that the manager took the time to write me back a personal email acknowleding my small concerns.
The Cons: When I arrived to check in, at approximately 9:40 p.m. (after a long day of driving, let me say that again!), I was a little disappointed to find that their computers were not quite working up to speed. There were two groups of people in front of me, and I ended up waiting in line for a good 20 minutes. Granted, the lady at the front desk did apologize every chance she got. These apologies of hers were in between chit-chat with truck drivers who were checking out by a separate system in which they just have to sign out on a sheet on a clipboard that is at the front desk. It was obvious that some of these truckdrivers are repeat customers. As the lady behind the desk massaged the computers to work faster, she also kind of inappropriately flirted with at least one of the truckdrivers. At one point, she flippingly told him to "shove it." I know she was just teasing, but that's inappropriate in front of other guests. The couple and their son in front of me in line had a dog with them, in the lobby. (I'm guessing it's a pet-friendly motel). The dog was fine, and well behaved. After it was FINALLY my turn to check in, and the folks in front of me had gone out of the lobby, the front desk lady said how glad she was that that smelly dog was gone from the lobby. He seriously did not smell at all! Inside the room, the only negatives I can point to were that there was a small, hard piece of something that looked like it came from a pineapple, near the floor of my bed. I'm glad I wasn't barefoot when I nearly stepped on it. Inside the bathroom, there were pieces of the soap wrapper from the previous occupants on the floor, quite visible.
The Pros: Overall clean, comfortable room. Plenty of space. Well decorated, seemed updated. Very quiet location. Fast access off/back on the highway. Breakfast offerings were ok, a little sparse perhaps, but fine if you want a bagel with peanutbutter, orange juice and coffee to get you started back on the road. Friendly houskeeping staff. Friendly morning lobby staff. Again, pleased that I received a personal reply from the motel's manager by email after voicing my concerns in the online review link I received from Red Roof Inn about the above-mentioned small issues.
A tip: I would highly recommend booking a room ahead of time. I can't remember if they offer AAA discounts, but try all available rates that pertain to you for the best deal on the Red Roof Inn website. With tax, this room (two double beds, nonsmoking) cost me about $75. Remember the couple ahead of me that I mentioned with the dog? Well, they were booking two rooms on-site that night. One was for their grown son. They quoted him a base price before tax of almost $80. His room ended up being right next door to ours. For the parents (and the non-smelly dog), the best that the lady behind the desk could offer them, she said, was a queen room for $99 before tax. Call me crazy and cheap, but I don't think this place is worth $99 a night. $70ish, yes, close to $100, nope.
Check out historic downtown Staunton, which is off this same exit, just in the opposite direction as you took off the highway to get here. It's very quaint and there is plenty of shopping and sights to see.
