My wife and I stayed here one Saturday night on the way driving home from visiting our daughter in North Carolina. While we have stayed many, many times at this hotel when it was a Microtel, this is our first stay since it did renovations and became a Quality Inn.
Check-in was slow because no one was manning the desk and we had to wait for someone to appear. Same was true on check out. The staff were all new folks (to us) and we noted that having no one manning the desk never happened when it was Microtel. So, service gets a 2.
The look of the hotel inside is *much* better/cleaner/fresher. In addition, they have added a nice large breakfast room, a stylish lounge area and computers and printers in a public space. So ambience gets a 4.0.
The room had many more outlets, as well as USB charging outlets and better lighting than before. So, room overall gets a 4. Unfortunately, the mattress was terrible and saggy. There is no way it was a new mattress, unless they bought the cheapest thing possible, Having a good night’s sleep on a decent mattress is absolutely my top priority for a hotel stay and I had requested a firm mattress. So, I gave the mattress a 2, lowering the room to a 3.
The breakfast the next morning was only fair. While it had warm things, the waffles were doughy and tasteless and the sausage, while tasty, was the thinnest patty we'd ever seen. The “cheese omelet” was folded egg around a Velveta core. Not too good. So breakfast was a 2 (for effort). The standard for what hotels in this class can do for breakfast is the Holiday Inn Express in Orange, VA. For more detail, see our review of that hotel.
We paid $69 non-refundable for a one queen bed room. Before the renovation/rebranding, we used to pay $52 (refundable) for the very same room, so in terms of value, we give this a 2.5.
Thus, overall, we’d give this hotel a 3.0, although it actually seems like a 2.5 and a less favorable rating than when it was a Microtel. While the Microtel was being renovated/rebranded, we stayed at the Mint Hill Days Inn instead. I have reviewed that hotel elsewhere on TripAdvisor.
