“A jarring mix of upscale venue, service, wine list, with disappointingly average food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

An upscale, expensive restaurant that delivers a sleek, modern ambiance, very professional service, very extensive wine list. Within this context the food is jarringly average. Together they deliver an mixed dining experience. Note that there is nothing wrong with the food per se, just solid average fare out of line with its price, e.g., supermarket quality rolls served in lieu of Italian bread. Overall, a mixed recommendation. If each component of an entire dining experience (venue, service, food) is of equal value to you, then Emilio's is worth a try, perhaps more than once. If the food is the primary component however, it is highly probable that you will be disappointed.

“Dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012

Great service, cozy atmosphere but not real "private". Food wonderful for a special night out, as the prices are a bit high but worth it.

“Fine, a little fussy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

The gaps in the reviews for this one must come from folks' bringing to it different expectations. That's not surprising: like all the places that Calvin Trillin calls "Maison de la Casa House," a lot of the food is ordinary and isn't exactly Italian (or anywhere else-ian), but it's presented and served as if it's a big deal. The ingredients are certainly better than what you'd get at a more ordinary Italian joint, and if the service can be a little slow and annoying, someone in the kitchen is trying to do the right things. When we were there last the smell of cleaning fluid blasted us when we walked in, and we stood in the little lobby forever waiting for someone to seat us (even though only 3 tables were occupied), but it was still a more comfortable choice than an ordinary pizzeria or diner, and the food was a jot better.

“Very tasty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

A huge menu offers many interesting Italian entrees. Our meals were very tasty, and the service was friendly and quick.

“Very Uneven: Learn to Make Drinks!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

We have eaten at Emilio's many times, but have become disappointed largely because of the beverage service. When you order a drink, it is unlikely your server will know how to make it. I ordered an old-fashioned and was given a small glass of whisky. Five times I or members of our party have ordered "something and soda." It can't get much simpler than this, right? Evidently it can, because the server brought us "something" plus a fluid that tasted like tap water. Sending it back did no good; it returned as flat as ever. We have been told that servers have to make drinks themselves, because there is no bartender on the first floor. (Don't know if this is true, but it seems so.) Also, a recent bottle of decent red wine was almost $10 cheaper at another nearby restaurant. (Granted that Emilio's is a more upscale ambiance.) For the drink prices, Emilio's should do better than this.
