Walked in and noticed an 'off 'smell, like old smoke but also musty. Would have stepped right out again but for generally positive reviews we'd seen. And the place looks clean. Were seated by a brusque middle-aged woman who also proved to be our waitress. The tables next to us were receiving cheerful and efficient care from a young lady. (Apologize for apparent ageism here, but nobody wears name badges these days and we'd like management to know who shines and who doesn't.)
I was waffling between a reuben and french dip and the waitress, who might also have been manager on duty, said no contest, get the french dip. Eventually it appeared and was the worst I
have ever eaten, dry meat no amount of dipping could rescue. Left half. The chips were good.
Coffee not delivered before or with meal. Asked again but only received it when we were ready to
leave. Rude and defensive woman then indicated it was my fault as I had asked for coffee with milk and they only serve with creamers. Meanwhile, the delightful waitress was nearby charming
her lucky diners and we were experiencing waitress envy. Staunton is chock full of great eateries. Why should we try the Clocktower again?
