“Excellent Overnight Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2008

On the road for several days, staying mostly in Hampton Inns. Chose this one for distance from starting point in Boston this morning. Lovely little town, beautiful homes. Red Lobster directly across street from hotel, which was good for dinner. Feel we've stayed at this hotel a few years ago - the hotel's appearance on a hill and the nearby Exxon station seem very familiar. The young man at check-in was very helpful. Wifi internet access was up to Hampton Inn standards, very important to us. The room was clean and comfortable. This was our first hotel with a large flat screen TV in the room. Complimentary hot cookies and coffee, as usual. Far enough from the highway so there's no traffic noise. As I write this we haven't had breakfast yet, but the breakfast room looks inviting. We'd definitely stay here again.

The hotel is being updated, but our room on the third floor was as nice as any Hampton. It was quiet, newly updated, clean and standard breakfast fare in the morning. Once again, Hampton came through with above the norm in cleanliness and modern room fixtures. Comfy bed with those clean blankets for each new guest.

  • Liked — I can count on Hampton Inns to be clean and quiet and comfortable
  • Disliked — Breakfast fare is not particularly healthy, but it is standard for American hotels

We have stayed in several Hampton Inns around the country and this one was definitely in need of room redecorating. Our room was very plain and drab both in color and decor. The sheets were cheap and scratchy and the mattress had some sort of metal edging that was uncomfortable when getting on or off the bed. I was surprised at the look of the room especially for over $122 per night including taxes. The room was though a good size and the bathroom had a very large counter area around the sink.
One reason why we chose to stay there was because of the "hot" breakfast adverised. We stayed for 2 nights and both mornings the "hot" breakfast consisted of fried eggs premade and shipped to the hotel for reheating and serving. As you may guess this was a huge disappointment as they were far from tasty. The variety of cold breakfast items was good with danish, etc. nice and fresh. After the first hot breakfast, I mentioned to the lady at the front desk how awful these were and she wrote a note to request scrambled eggs for the next morning - that didn't happen but at least she tried. The staff in the breakfast area were not at all friendly. The front desk staff was helpful and our housekeeper very accommodating.
My husband was attending a meeting nearby and I had the day to myself so I wanted to explore downtown Staunton. This was another reason to choose the Hampton Inn because it was just 2 miles or so from downtown. My only choice of transportation was to take the only cab co. in town. It cost me $20 round trip for that short ride downtown. A low cost shuttle provided by the hotel would have been nice.
Downtown Staunton was fun and lots of great little shops to explore. A free trolley takes you around town. On Saturday there was a farmer's market that was fun. The Pampered Palate and the American Cafe were good places for lunch. We had a fabulous dinner at the Depot Grill and one at the restaurant right next to it in the train station. It was a fun weekend but I would stay elsewhere the next time. I have had nicer rooms at half the price. We heard the Quality Inn was really nice and was only $56 per night.

We stayed here in late July. it was a great place to stay. The place made such a good impression that Hampton Inn is the only place I want to stay when traveling. the staff was very accomodating. The beds ae out of this world with lots of pillows. I would definitely stay here again.

We arrived at the hotel about midnight. The parking lot was full, but we managed to find a place near the entry. We reserved a king room, but were upgraded to a large suite. We loved the room. Room was clean and big. We did not hear a thing, even thought the hotel was fully booked.
Very nice view on the mountains and easy interstate access (about 1 mile from the Staunton exit).

We skipped the breakfast and chose to eat at the local country kitchen instead. However, the breakfast room looked good.

We paid $ 99 plus tax. A bargain! If we are in the area again, we will definitely visit again.

Requested a non-smoking room by telephone. The plate on the door said non-smoking. The room smelled slightly from smoke and it was not until we got back from dinner that we realized that the rooms on both sides were smoking rooms. The smoke from those rooms and perhaps others came in through the vent in the bathroom and by the next morning the room smelled like we were chain smokers. The odor was intolerable. It smelled like a bar. Complained to the front desk and we were credited but the ordeal was not worth it and 2 weeks later I am still sick from it with throat and sinus irritation. I would never again stay in that motel. I would rather sleep in the street. The air would be cleaner.
