“Nice Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2009

We were pleasantly surprised when we checked into the Holiday Inn. The lobby and rooms have been re-done, tastefully and upscale. We had an amazing view of the golf course and mountains from our room. The breakfast was excellent. When you first drive up, you see the old look of a contemporary Holiday Inn but the inside is much nicer. They still need to do a few updates like the old ceiling fans in the dining room. The staff was excellent. We will be back!

My wife and I frequently travel from New Jersey to North Carolina and Staunton is a great stopping place. The Holiday Inn at exit 225 on route 81 consistently has provided excellent value for our money (they don't run travel book coupons anymore). The staff is professional and courteous, and the property well maintained. I don't know where the picture on the top of the page came from - think it's a clock tower in downtown Staunton which has nothing to do with the Holiday Inn. Anyway, we will continue to plan our trips using this motel as a welcoming traveler's host.

My family of 4 (2 adults, 9yr old, 11 yr old) enjoyed our overnight enroute to the town of Lurray to see the caverns. The Holiday Inn was an easy-off the highway. Not quite ready for dinner, we drove around to see what was in the area for later; not much! We checked in to our clean but VERY standard room. Nothing special, but fine for overnight. No fridge, etc. We went down to the restaurant for dinner and were reminded about Kids eat Free; my husband got a crock of soup, I got a chicken sandwich, my kids each received meals with drinks and dessert and good "side" choices, my husband and I had sodas, and our bill was less than $13! Food was very good. Food was slow to arrive, but service was attentive and friendly. Entire staff was very helpful and pleasant. They also had full dinners available. Restraunt overlooked the pool, and you could hear screaming kids a bit, as well as the "lounge" one room over which had a loud band playing. Didn't bother us, but could bother someone looking for a quiet setting. Later we went to the pool and that added the hint of "special" to our stay - it was small, but the indoor/outdoor feature WOWED the kids! They loved swimming from the inside, under the glass to the outside. It was about 9:30pm when we were swimming, and the hotel lounge was seperated from the pool by a glass partisian. You could smell smoke (stale smell) a bit, and the music was very loud. Overall, we would go again.

We stayed here for one night while passing thru on the interstate. We got a terrific deal for $60 thru Hotwire. The hotel staff was accommodating with our request for a king size bed and high floor location. The location is right on the interstate, so ask for a room at the back of the hotel if traffic noise bothers you. It is well outside the city itself, with nothing else around except for a golf course. You'll have to pay for breakfast in the onsite restaurant which has a good menu and food. BTW the picture they show of the red brick building is not the hotel, but something in downtown which you will never see. We had a good sized room with comfortable king bed, desk, easy chair, TV (no frig or micro), high speed internet worked fine, good shower head, everything nicely furnished, clean, attractive. Only complaint would be the hallway carpeting could use a good cleaning.

The rooms are spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. Service was excellent; the person on the desk got a peanut butter sandwich for my husband when he was having a low blood sugar episode and we were unprepared for it. But the internet was awful. It was not just our laptop; even the hotel's computer had internet so slow that it wasn't worth trying to use it. If internet is important to you, stay somewhere else. If you don't need it, you'll be pleased here. However, you should be aware that they do not have a free breakfast.

The hotel is conveniently located just off interstate 81- about two minutes north of Staunton. Starbucks-gas stations etc are just off the next exit 222 which is about a 2 minute drive. We arrived a lot earlier than check in time but they found a room cleaned and ready for us. The room is large with a King bed, miro wave and small fridge. The lighting is good and our room had a view of the golf course. The bathroom is well lit a good size with lots of soaps etc. We're right next to the elevator but I did not hear a thing.

The day we arrived there were two children’s beauty pagents here , lots of kids around. When I asked at the desk for a dolly to take our things up to the room, they could not find one. Apparently people were keeping them in their rooms...the hotel apologized and found one of the staff to help us take our things and our cat up to the room.
Once in the room we found that the toilet was not as clean as it should have been. My husband asked one of the housekeeper who was working on another room to come and remedy the situation, which she did immediately and was very pleasant. A while later, the head housekeeper showed up to apologize for the lack of cleanliness and asked if they could offer us a free meal at the restaurant here. We accepted of course and the hotel also discounted our room charge! Amazing customer service!

We had dinner in the restaurant on site and were very pleased with the quality and value. The bedding was new and the bed very comfortable. The view from our room was wonderful and the room was very clean. And even though the place was full of kids....we did not hear a thing all night.

This hotel is undergoing a total renovation and we were fortunate enough to get to stay in the part that had just been done. Everything was new and the staff were very friendly. We had also picked up a coupon book while stopped at a rest area along I-81 and we got the room for about $85 per night compared to much older, lesser quality hotels in the area at $149 per night. It also has a great indoor/outdoor pool and the food in the restaurant was surprisingly good. For those traveling along I-81 and needing a place near Staunton, you can't beat this one!
