“A bit basic and pricey, but a quaint comfortable escape from it all”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2011

LOCATION – Nice rural location, easy to get to from the Swift Run gap junction of the Skyline Drive. Some amenities in the nearby town of Stanardsville.

CABIN – Cabin was a converted caboose (railway carriage for the uninitiated!) It was a little more basic that I assumed from the description, but was clean and comfortable. Just about large enough for 2 people.

Fully equipped kitchen (hotplate but no oven). No TV. Small air conditioning unit. Very small bathroom with a shower and a toilet but no sink, basic toiletries and no hairdryer. Door did not lock, but was OK for us as we were only there for one evening.

Linens are not included in the price but are available for a small fee.

Nice raised outdoor area with table and chairs, grill and fire pit. Great to sit outside in the peace and quiet with the stars and wildlife.

SERVICE – Very friendly and helpful staff/owner. Very easy to book directly on-line with immediate confirmation. Able to pay with credit card.

VALUE FOR MONEY – I would say that it was a little overpriced when compared with what you can get for the money in a chain hotel in a larger city, but for the area the price was not too bad.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE – Comfort, peace and quite, nice to get away from it all (including the TV for the evening). Good to stay somewhere a bit unusual with a bit of character. OK for a couple of nights, but would start to feel a bit cramped for a longer stay.

We stayed in one of the cabooses during our week-long honeymoon in central VA. It was very cute, but I will say it was very cozy (small).

When we first arrived, it was dark and we had trouble finding the office.

Our caboose was great for 2 people, but would not have been comfortable with any more than that. There was a kitchenette with two stove burners, mini-fridge, sink and coffee pot. The coffee was not provided. The bathroom was very small with just enough room to turn around in. It had a toilet, medicine cabinet and shower stall, but the only sink was in the kitchen area.

The bed was full size in a small room with just enough space to walk around to both sides. It was not very comfortable because you could feel all of the springs in the mattress.

It would have been nice to be able to open the windows, as the weather was very nice while we were there. However, there is an air conditioning unit that you can control yourself.

Something we found odd was that the door did not lock. If you leave the site, you should probably take any valuables with you. The cabooses did have decks around 3 sides and a fire pit and grill, which we did not have time to use.

It seems like I'm complaining, but overall, we did like it. It was cozy and cute and just a neat experience to stay in a caboose. I wasn't expecting too much for a room at a campground anyway.

The site for our tent was nice, however keep in mind that it was one of the more "private" of the sites and we could still see our neighboring campers. Our site had a fire pit and grill, and also happened to have a nice view.

Now, this place is perfect if youre just looking for a woodsy outdoor area to camp with the kids or a outdoor space near the woods to party with a bunch of friends and family. However, you'll be disappointed if you want a true deep woods forest atmosphere.

Don't get me wrong; the owners are great, the other campers are friendly, there's lots of stuff for kids to do and the location is perfect for also visiting Charlottesville and/or Shenandoah. But this place was LOUD and packed with other campers when we visited.

Will we come back here again? If we want a quick getaway from DC and want to do some hiking in the Shenandoah, then sure. But we are also definitely open to finding a place with more natural surroundings that is more quiet.

Also, I'm very disappointed that we bought firewood from them that was not dry enough to burn because it hadn't been seasoned long enough. A waste of $5. :(

We have stayed here for the last 3 years - twice in the Cabin and once in the Caboose. The cabin in a good location with a lot of privacy. There is no running water inside or toliet but it's near by. The Caboose is fully loaded bathroom and kitchen. Others complain about the small bathroom but you have one so don't complain! The owners of the campground are really nice and each year the other campers seemed to be very friendly - so get out walk around and meet people. See ya next year!

I am an experienced camper and prefer being out in the woods without a neighboring tent within snoring distance. This campground gets that. I got a large campsite for $25.00 that could have accommodated 4-5 tents easy with a nice rock fire pit and a grill. I went with my wife, my 3 year old son, (his first overnight camping trip) and my sister-in-law and her husband. It was quiet and wooded. There are "rustic outhouses" that feature flushing toilets. There was a nice long hayride for the kids. I needed a screwdriver and the owner dropped what he was doing between hayrides went to his house and found me one. They also have cabooses that you can stay in and I plan on going back to do that.

No problem getting our 31 foot motor home into a nice size space. Found the owners to be very corgial and accommodating. Pool was very clean with a nice slide. Full hookups except for cable, but we were able to get 20 digital TV stations off the air antenna. Quite and restful place. Do not expect big city or urban amenities here. If you want a nice quite, peaceful stay this is the place

We were so disappointed when we arrived at the Caboose we rented. There was a bad odor, very cramped quarters, no TV, no heat except for space heaters which were on 24 hrs. a day, refrigerator didn't work & we lost food, no sink or mirror in bathroom (try shaving like this) bed was N/G and the space so small you couldn't put your arms up! We looked at 2 other units but they weren't any better. We advised the owner of the problems and asked for a refund but he wouldn't give us anything back.
THIS WAS SO OVERPRICED AND I HOPE NO ONE ELSE WILL GET SHAFTED LIKE WE DID!
