“Very neat & clean, great view of mountains”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2010

Management was very polite & pleasant. Rooms were spacious & very clean. The view of the Blue Ridge Mountains was great. The breakfast buffet was plentiful with many selections.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location and the view. My family had 3 rooms, one of which was infested with bed bugs. The hotel knew they had the problem and tried to exterminate. When a refund was requested, we were told because we booked through a 3rd party they couldn't do anything. Also, the continental breakfast was HORRENDOUS! If you want a view, but don't mind sleeping with bugs, this is the place for you!

The HoJo was a pleasant surprise among the moderately priced htels in the Salem area. When you combine easy access from I-81 with great service, clean rooms, a quiet night's sleep , and a hearty breakfast, this hotel is hard to resist!

The Salem HoJo will be our stopping point in the future.

The three of us (husband, wife and teenage son) spent a night here on our way to Washington from Alabama. We were very pleased with the place for it's location, price, breakfast and the room. The view from the top of the hill was fantastic.
We will stay there again....

I was very happy to find this motel after more than 30 years of driving I-81 once or twice a year. It is easy to locate; if you are northbound, you can see it on the hill to your left. Take exit 137, then turn left at the end of the ramp. Take your first right, an immediate right if southbound; go under the highway if northbound, then right. Then go 1/2 mile and turn left into the driveway on the left. It is steep with a sharp turn into the motel driveway. Courteous and helpful check-in. My room was huge: it had a king-sized bed, love seat, coffee table, writing table and chair. (Plenty of room for a fridge and microwave, guys; where were they?) The view from the window on the interstate side is spectacular: Salem VA and the Shenandoah Mountains. The breakfast was pretty good, too. Great selection of restaurants within a mile toward Salem. The reason for losing a star (really just half a star)? The bed was way too soft and the heater/air conditioner too strong an airflow (although the noise is very smooth and didn't keep me awake). This is now my motel for all trips south from New England.

scooper47's top tips: 1. Use a coupon if you have no reservation. Try roomsaver dot com or travelcoupons dot com. I saved twenty-two dollars plus tax over the Internet rate. 2. Ask for a room on the second or third floor, interstate side for a view; the other side should be much quieter. 3. Avoid this motel if you are towing a large trailer or conditions are icy.

Basic facilities. I would have reviewed this hotel on my frequent flyer page, but didn't have the option. Location is good as long as you don't have a trailer to haul up the very, very step road & driveway! Great view if you are not on the backside of the building, too! HBO was not available due to some lawsuit filed by some parent who didn't know how to use parental controls, but the front desk didn't say that on my first call, and the monthly schedule was still in the room as if it was available. Fitness center out of order. Pool greener than my best pesto. No micro or mini-refrigerator which should be standard these days. Linen worn, but clean? Maybe the breakfast will redeem the place, but definitely not a repeat place for me!

I always read reviews before I select a hotel. I think this is just my nature of trying to get the best deal for the least cost. I look for ratings and then scan down to find the hotel with the most stars at the least cost... and believe me that doesn't always turn out well. So this hotel had a lot of reviews and not all good but at least some reviews. So let me say for the cost you get a nice view a fairly comfortable room... cleanliness is modest and the breakfast had some desires but it will do. So I wouldn't count this out if your trying to save money and want a place that is as nice as some of the more expensive hotels in the area.
