“Good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

We stopped at this hotel on our way to the Great Smoky Mountain national park. We did not have any reservation and just stopped by and asked if they had anything available. I was impressed by how big the rooms were and how clean. The staff is helpful and breakfast is of reasonable Quality. Overall it's a good deal for a family with kids.

What an outstanding stay! We usually stay in Roanoke but couldn't find lodging there for Mother's Day weekend. Salem is an easy 20 minute drive to Roanoke do we took a chance. This Comfort Suites is the nicest we've stayed in. The indoor hot tub is hit and relaxing AND salt water -- a real indulgence. Staff over the top helpful and room was clean and quiet. Will stay there again.

As a coupon user, I clip and use motel/hotel coupons on a regular basis. The one area of the country that consistently says "we aren't honoring coupons today" is the Salem, Va. area down through the Christiansburg, Va. area. I have yet to be able to use a coupon...and the excuse is always something like it is national groundhog appreciation day, or a tulip festival or something. I think this was a local graduation. Oh, they had rooms available, but with a AAA discount, the room climbed over $50 from the coupon price. Really? Really. $125.00 plus taxes for a night in Salem, Virginia? I don't think so. On a recent business trip to Long Island, the motels/hotels were far nicer, and far less expensive. This area is a rip off. Find a motel at exit 150 or north on I-81, or if headed south, and taking I-77, go to exit 14 or even exit 8.

Room Tip: If headed north on I-81, go to exit 150 or north of that. If headed south, and onto I-77, go to exit...

My wife and I arrived around 10pm on a Monday night. We did not have a prior reservation and this was out first stay at a Comfort Suites hotel. Immediately we were impressed with the cleanliness of the front lobby/entrance area....which is important for first impressions. The front desk personnel were helpful and friendly. Our room was on the first floor. It was spacious, clean, and very nicely appointed. Immediately on our left was a very nice-sized and clean bathroom with plenty of neatly folded towels of assorted sizes. The shower, sink/countertop, and commode were all spotless. Out hats off to the very capable cleaning staff. It is a relatively new hotel so that explains why the condition of everything was so nice, but the cleaning staff has obviously worked very hard to keep everything in top shape and looking new. There were two very comfortable queen beds at the far end of the suite and in between the sleeping area and the bathroom there was a very nice-sized sitting area with a sofa and good lighting for reading, and across from that a good-sized desk for business travelers or those people looking for a comfortable place to write some postcards to send back home. The beds were very comfortable, the flat-screened TV worked well with many channels, good security hardware at the door, and we found it very quiet overnight. They provide a very ample breakfast from around 6am until 10am and there was quite an array of foods....assorted juices, pastries, Belgian waffles, sausages, cheese omelets, coffee and tea, and many other things. The cold items were properly refrigerated and the cooked foods were kept hot. The whole breakfast area was presented in a clean and neat way with no accumulated debris/trash and the foods were never allowed to run out or empty. Obviously if you are still reading this review you clearly understand that we were very satisfied with the hotel, and we were. There was only one issue we had with our accommodation, and I have noticed in reading other reviews that other guests have experienced the same thing....we found it difficult, even on the first floor to get adequate hot water. At 5 o'clock in the morning there was no hot water, at least not in the 5-7 minutes that I let the bathroom sink faucet run until I gave up. Considering the hotel places little cards around the room promoting eco-friendly practices such as saving water by allowing guests staying multiple days to opt out of daily bed linen washing, this seemed very counter-productive to need to allow the water to run endlessly in order for it to get hot. It was troublesome getting hot water early, but by later in the morning there was enough for showers.
For many years I/we have stayed at Hampton Inn hotels and have been VERY satisfied with them. This recent stay at the Salem Comfort Suites was very much like a Hampton Inn stay....even the breakfast menu reminded me of the Hampton Inn....as well as the comfort of the beds. We would most certainly stay at this Comfort Suites again, and look forward to the next opportunity.

Stayed overnight on our way down South. Never stayed at a comfort suites before, but was very impressed. Very clean hotel. Not far from I-81. Indoor pool and spa was nice. We normally stay in Roanoke but this hotel was great. Reasonably priced hotel, good value for the price. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend to others.

Easy access from I-81. Room was clean, very comfortable and spacious. Complimentary breakfast was very good with variety that would suit just about everyone. Always look for this chain when I travel as they have not disappointed. Close proximity to shopping and restaurants.

This is one of the nicest places we have stayed in the month we have been traveling. The room is big, clean, neat, inviting. The staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the hot tub, but it looked very inviting. It was the only place we've stayed that had bold flavored coffee! A real treat! Not the usual dish-water. The one draw back was the eggs and bacon were cold. Not sure if the burner was not on, or not working. When I asked about it, the young man said "it could be many things." Not sure what that meant. Definitely will put it on our list to places to stay when traveling in the area.
