“poor management”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2011

It was the worst place I ever stood in. We stood in room 237 and 239. room 237 kept having a power shortage and when you would call from desk to turn the lights back on they took forever. On occasions our keys wouldn't open the door and we found ourselves struggling with the door for a good five or ten minutes. Tub and tiolets are dirty. Housing cleaners are very friendly but they have no other choice than to smile and nod because they don't understand a word you say. Men that are there to clean the pool spend their day making sexual advances to the female guest.
They hang out by the pool drinking and making passes to young 15 year old. Their coffee was aweful. House cleaning never knocks when they decide in the late afternoon to come to your room to clean it. Sure you have a safe in your room for your valuable but cant use it because you have no key.

This is all management lack of managing. The staff does whatever they please. Why would you hire people that dont speak english to deal with americans. Doesn't anybody check the work that house cleaners are doing? why isn't someone directing the staff to start cleaning early in the morning so that they can be done by one in the afternoon? Has anyone checked to see if they bedspreads been washed. Where is management?

We selected this hotel as an overnight stop for a short weekend trip. What a bad choice. Everything was old and dirty. Anything and everything chrome or metal in the room was rusted. The sheets were dingy and yellowed. The sink would not drain. The restaurant was held together with duct tape. The rat traps under the stairs was a delightful touch, as well.

My family stayed here and when we walked into the room it was clean and smelled good. The mattresses were like new. I checked them and they were sealy posturpedic brand. The room had a microwave and refridgerator that worked awesome, as well as a nice size tv with HBO. The staff was very friendly and they offered a free breakfast each morning. The pool was clean and went to 8 1/2 ft. I would stay here again and would recommend it to any of my friends or family. The only downfall to the stay was a very slow wifi connection. My computer only picked up at most 3 bars the whole time, if not lower. I didn't feel like having to sit in the lobby to get fast internet so I had to deal with the slow speed.

Have stayed at this hotel twice and have been very pleased each time. Hotel is an older drive-up park at the door style, but don't let that put you off. Hotel has been totally refurbished! Our room had a super-comfy king pillow top bed with lots of pillows, also a mini fridge, microwave & coffeemaker in the room. Lots of space to spread out and relax. Included was a free hot made-to-order breakfast! We will definitely stay there again!! Stop along the highway at the welcome stations for the travel coupon booklet and save even more on this value!

This motel is old and shows its age in many areas. Outside entrance to rooms, doors that don't close well and worn carpeting, just to mention a few.

I spent several nights here and fortunately only needed a place to sleep. But the motel was OK in several areas. Both our double beds were very comfortable, our pillows were good, and our bedding was good and seemed clean. Our room had a mini-refrigerator, microwave, small coffee maker and a table with two chairs. Our cable TV had a good selection of channels. The wireless internet connection worked fine, although it was somewhat slow. All of the front desk staff were pleasant, accomodating and knowledgable about the area. Our room was also quiet.

On the negative side, our room was somewhat small, making everything very crowded with little room to move around. Our bath and toilet area was extremely small, but the sink was outside the bathroom making this tolerable. Our toilet bowl had a brown ring at the water level, giving the impression it had not been scrubbed since who knows when. Our towels were well worn, thin and very dingy looking (not white). Our washcloths were the same way, one of them so worn it had strings hanging from it.

As previous Trip Advisor reviewers wrote, breakfast was very basic and served from the kitchen with a choice of three items - a) scrambled eggs with bacon and toasted white bread, b) two pancakes with bacon, or c) biscuits and gravy. Also orange juice, cereal, milk, coffee or tea. Hot coffee and hot water for tea were also on the counter all through the day.

For an old, budget motel, this motel met our minimal requirement of getting a good night rest.

Ahhh the choices for lodging when you stay at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia: not very many! I know that "seasonal" hotels have to make their money when they can to stay in business; but I really wish there were more reasonably priced hotels close to Kings Dominion. To avoid confusion: we stayed for a night at the Days Inn Carmel Church, near Kings Dominion. There is also a newer Days Inn by Kings Dominion. I was surprised to see that one (also a One Star!) going for over $100 a night. We did priceline and really didn't want to pay more than $50 and our Name Your Price ended us up here... We went to the park during the day and just basically wanted a place to sleep for the night not out of the way to/from D.C. Well, the location is pretty good at least.

Positives:
For a One Star motel, they do have a few positives. There was a mini fridge, free wifi (although I can't vouch for that), and mini microwave in the room. HBO, of course. It was relatively clean. Not nasty, I suppose. It's not like there were bugs or rodents or anything....I'll go over the negative parts of the cleanliness in a bit. They do have a small swimming pool outside. It doesn't open until Memorial Day, I'm pretty sure; so it wasn't open last weekend. They do offer a free hot breakfast in their on site breakfast diner. They give you a choice of one of the following: Egg/sausage/toast, Egg/bacon/toast; pancake/bacon/toast or Cereal with milk. Not sure why you don't get toast with your cereal with milk but who am I to question! lol. We decided against the free breakfast and went to the Waffle House nearby, instead.

Negatives:
We first checked into a smoking room, even though our Priceline request was for non-smoking. There has been a LOT of smoking in that room. They should at least make an effort and spray some Fabreeze or something. It really did reak of smoke. We went back to the front desk (drive up room) and told them. Not very graciously, she said "You didn't request a non smoking room". She didn't give us the warm and fuzzies when we checked in and certainly didn't now. She said the only rooms left that were non smoking were two double beds. Not a big deal, I guess, but the place didn't seem that full. Plus, she never apologized or gave any sympathy. Not the best customer service, for sure. Our non smoking two double bed room was pretty clean, for the most part. BUT there was a pretty big cigarette hole (how do you not see that or not replace it??) in the blanket on the bed. The water from the sink and shower was brown. Brown. I thought it may have been a situation where you let it run a minute and then it's clear. Not so. It was brown. The last time I wanted to brush my teeth with bottled water was in Mexico. :-)

Part of me wants to recommend this motel due to the freebies and "it is what it is" (a place to sleep). Especially, if you can get a great deal (name your price, etc). But, I think many people would be disappointed and I think you can do better: Especially when the "normal" prices are $70-$80. At least when we priced it out, anyway. Bear in mind, there are not a lot of options for hotels close to Kings Dominion. If possible, maybe travel a bit (Richmond, Fredericksburg, etc) for a better hotel/motel for the same price.
