“Great hotel, we'll stay every time we come to Roanoke”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2011

Really nice hotel, very clean, nice room with very comfortable beds, great AC, microwave/fridge. Nice touch was a tiny rubber duckie with plenty of bath towels in the very clean bathroom, and also a cool leather swivel chair with a leather footrest, for sitting up and watching TV. Perfect location, right on ring road of Valley View Mall, so plenty of restaurants, movies, shopping nearby. Nice indoor heated pool, but no hot tub. Elevator right by lobby. Nice fast complimentary laptop computer in lobby with printer. Nice little continental breakfast with pastries/fruit/yogurt/waffles/sausage/breakfast burritos. VERY clean and nice. Located by the airport but we never heard a plane while sleeping. Perfect for visiting kids up there, and will recommend to my friends with kids in college there!

Room Tip: On the Best Western site, choose best rate.

Very pleasant welcome from the Manager who understood my wishes and obliged with a good room. Room was very clean, comfortable and with a exercise bike. Breakfast room is small for the size of hotel and basic but adequate.

Not only is this one of the dirtiest rooms I have ever stayed in, the musty smell lingered in our clothes even after we left. The shower head in the bathroom that was not adjustable and the sink stopper would not open up only added to my dissatisfaction.

How dissapointing to read that your experience with us wasn't a positive one. I'm so sorry for that! We would hope that all of our guests could leave saying that they enjoyed their stay. But we realize that things break, items get over-looked and errors are made. Not often, but they do happen. My concern with your review however, was when I read that the room you were in was one of the dirtiest rooms you've ever stayed in. Best Western International inspections are very thorough and detailed. Within the Best Western ratings, we ranked only 16 points from being awarded the President's Award of Excellence (a prestigious award that recognizes Best Western's cleanest hotels). In saying that, it shows that we work hard to provide clean rooms to our guests. Remember, things do get overlooked as I stated, but not often.

Also, we take our guests' satisfaction seriously. Whenever a guest reports a problem or states their dissatisfaction to management, we try to remedy it immediately. I hope that you gave us a chance to make things better at the time of your visit. Your review didn't mention that you reported your problems, but I trust that you gave us an opportunity to compensate for your dissapointment.

We were in town for two nights and had our small dog with us. There were not many dog-friendly hotels in Roanoke, so we selected the Best Western Plus based on their pet policy ($25 pet fee) and favorable reviews here.

All staff members that we encountered were very friendly and accommodating.

The hotel itself seems neither old nor new, and the decor is average - not what I would choose myself, but not as cheesey as hotels once were. The rooms are rather small, but are equipped with flat-screen tv, microwave, and fridge. Our AC was ample and not too loud. Our room, bathroom, and the common areas were very, very clean, which is especially notable given that we were in a pet-friendly room.

The pet-friendly rooms seemed to be grouped together on the first floor near a back door which was convenient for walks. The room was clean and in no way smelled of pets (yet didn't smell of mass quantities of cleaning products, either). We heard the occasional bark from a neighboring dog, but it was not disruptive in the least, and it was a bit comforting to know that fellow pet-owners nearby would probably not be offended if ours made a small disturbance herself. As pet travel arrangements go, I can't think of any hotels that have done it better.

Though for the price I paid ($86 per night), I can hardly complain about a safe, clean hotel with free (if small) breakfast, the Best Western Plus did lack some of the touches that I have become accustomed to even at value brands like Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn. The rooms were on the small side, the pool was small and a little dreary, the business center was hardly worth noting, and the bedding was not as nice as the fluffy comforter with freshly washed duvet that I see at many hotels these days. The beds were basically covered with a blanket and sheet; more blankets were available but we had to go to the front desk to get them. Foam pillows were not available, and the room didn't have extra pillows, or even bags to take laundry home in.

In all, I would certainly stay here again if traveling with a pet, but would probably venture elsewhere if I found myself in Roanoke again.

We found this hotel difficult to find, driving south along the 581, even though we came off the 581 at the correct junction. The correct turning to the hotel is immediately after a ramp to the 581 and before the junction allowing you to turn right for the shopping mall. It is possible to get to the hotel from the shopping mall but only if you know you way around it. Obviously, being first timers to the area, we didn’t!

We were warmly welcomed at reception and quickly checked in. Our room (200) was massive, with separate bedroom and lounge areas. There was lots of storage space. We even had our own exercise bike in the bedroom which we occasionally used.

We had independent air conditioning in each room but both were a little noisy. Also the a/c unit in the lounge seemed to have a mind of its own – it worked perfectly OK in the afternoon and evening but sometime overnight it always seemed to stop working. The chambermaid always seemed to be able to sort it out.

We had a microwave, fridge and carafe coffee maker in the suite. We also had a lovely little duck for the bath. Unfortunately ours appeared to be dead as it would only float upside down or on its side!!

The room and bathroom were always very clean, though we were surprised that the basin soap was removed after one day, even though it was perfectly usable. Thereafter we hid the soap to stop the chambermaid removing it! The main negative aspects of the room were the lack of a full-length mirror except in the bathroom and the only towel rail being above the w/c.

The breakfast area was very small, comprising ~5 tables. We ended up taking what we wanted back to our room! To be honest, and we know the lady responsible for it tried her best, we were disappointed by the selection available. There was yoghurt, fruit juice but only tinned fruit salad. There was a very limited choice of pastries (in cling film), some bagels and some cereals. There was also hot food. Coffee was always available when we wanted it and it was always hot.

The hotel claims that several restaurants are approximately 0.1 miles away. We definitely disagree with this. The nearest restaurant is the Red Palace (Chinese), followed by a Texas restaurant and Applebees – the first two are probably 0.1 miles away. TGI Fridays is about 10 minutes away by foot, which makes it about 0.5 miles at our walking speed. Carabba’s is a little further at about 15-20 minutes. The Olive Garden and Red Robin restaurants are a little further than TGI Fridays.

We were at the hotel for 3 nights but were surprised that both room keys failed to work on returning to our room on the afternoon after our second night. The hotel offered no explanation for this but we were quickly given two new room keys which worked. However, having experienced a similar problem later in our holiday at a different hotel chain, we wonder if it is a deliberate US hotel policy – for reasons unfathomable to us.

The hotel is very well located near to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Natural Bridge and nearby towns.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this hotel – the suite was great and very comfortable. However, the hotel should improve its breakfast selection for non-hot food (e.g. fresh cut fruit, bigger area, muffins).

We stayed here to be in close proximity for an early flight from ROA. This is definitely a step above your average Best Western. Rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly. The grounds were clean and well cared for. It has an indoor pool which did not appeal to us during July, but I would imagine their winter visitors would love it. The only negative is trying to get to the hotel through the Valley View Mall traffic. Our regular double room has a refrigerator and microwave. The free continental breakfast wasn't much to write home about, but hey...it was free. I will say the coffee was pretty good.

We stayed here last week on a trip along 81. Is the absolutely the "finest" hotel you have ever seen - as the previous poster complained about? It's a normal hotel - it doesn't bill itself to be an elite hotel - nor does it have elite prices...

This was a very nice hotel though. The desire to serve the customer shows in a lot of little ways. We had a king bed room. There was a recliner in the room which won over my husband - a great place to relax in a comfortable way. The breakfast was above the usual cereal, fruit and waffles. They had eggs, sausage, breakfast burritos and sausage gravy biscuits.

Our room was quiet and the bed comfortable. The staff was always very helpful - almost like they are trying to win an employee of the week contest - always ready to be of service or show concern.

Overall, I would say that the management really wants to get good reviews (the trip advisor sticker on the front door, their comments here...) and as in all businesses, the employees follow the lead of management. This is a place you can stay and know that not only will they try to help you out if you do experience a problem, but are thinking of the little extras that make a hotel stay a little bit nicer than usual.

We ate at a Texas Steakhouse across the street (walking distance) which also had very nice and helpful employees.
