“A better breakfast would make a huge difference”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2011

We found this hotel difficult to find, driving south along the 581, even though we came off the 581 at the correct junction. The correct turning to the hotel is immediately after a ramp to the 581 and before the junction allowing you to turn right for the shopping mall. It is possible to get to the hotel from the shopping mall but only if you know you way around it. Obviously, being first timers to the area, we didn’t!

We were warmly welcomed at reception and quickly checked in. Our room (200) was massive, with separate bedroom and lounge areas. There was lots of storage space. We even had our own exercise bike in the bedroom which we occasionally used.

We had independent air conditioning in each room but both were a little noisy. Also the a/c unit in the lounge seemed to have a mind of its own – it worked perfectly OK in the afternoon and evening but sometime overnight it always seemed to stop working. The chambermaid always seemed to be able to sort it out.

We had a microwave, fridge and carafe coffee maker in the suite. We also had a lovely little duck for the bath. Unfortunately ours appeared to be dead as it would only float upside down or on its side!!

The room and bathroom were always very clean, though we were surprised that the basin soap was removed after one day, even though it was perfectly usable. Thereafter we hid the soap to stop the chambermaid removing it! The main negative aspects of the room were the lack of a full-length mirror except in the bathroom and the only towel rail being above the w/c.

The breakfast area was very small, comprising ~5 tables. We ended up taking what we wanted back to our room! To be honest, and we know the lady responsible for it tried her best, we were disappointed by the selection available. There was yoghurt, fruit juice but only tinned fruit salad. There was a very limited choice of pastries (in cling film), some bagels and some cereals. There was also hot food. Coffee was always available when we wanted it and it was always hot.

The hotel claims that several restaurants are approximately 0.1 miles away. We definitely disagree with this. The nearest restaurant is the Red Palace (Chinese), followed by a Texas restaurant and Applebees – the first two are probably 0.1 miles away. TGI Fridays is about 10 minutes away by foot, which makes it about 0.5 miles at our walking speed. Carabba’s is a little further at about 15-20 minutes. The Olive Garden and Red Robin restaurants are a little further than TGI Fridays.

We were at the hotel for 3 nights but were surprised that both room keys failed to work on returning to our room on the afternoon after our second night. The hotel offered no explanation for this but we were quickly given two new room keys which worked. However, having experienced a similar problem later in our holiday at a different hotel chain, we wonder if it is a deliberate US hotel policy – for reasons unfathomable to us.

The hotel is very well located near to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Natural Bridge and nearby towns.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this hotel – the suite was great and very comfortable. However, the hotel should improve its breakfast selection for non-hot food (e.g. fresh cut fruit, bigger area, muffins).

We stayed here to be in close proximity for an early flight from ROA. This is definitely a step above your average Best Western. Rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly. The grounds were clean and well cared for. It has an indoor pool which did not appeal to us during July, but I would imagine their winter visitors would love it. The only negative is trying to get to the hotel through the Valley View Mall traffic. Our regular double room has a refrigerator and microwave. The free continental breakfast wasn't much to write home about, but hey...it was free. I will say the coffee was pretty good.

We stayed here last week on a trip along 81. Is the absolutely the "finest" hotel you have ever seen - as the previous poster complained about? It's a normal hotel - it doesn't bill itself to be an elite hotel - nor does it have elite prices...

This was a very nice hotel though. The desire to serve the customer shows in a lot of little ways. We had a king bed room. There was a recliner in the room which won over my husband - a great place to relax in a comfortable way. The breakfast was above the usual cereal, fruit and waffles. They had eggs, sausage, breakfast burritos and sausage gravy biscuits.

Our room was quiet and the bed comfortable. The staff was always very helpful - almost like they are trying to win an employee of the week contest - always ready to be of service or show concern.

Overall, I would say that the management really wants to get good reviews (the trip advisor sticker on the front door, their comments here...) and as in all businesses, the employees follow the lead of management. This is a place you can stay and know that not only will they try to help you out if you do experience a problem, but are thinking of the little extras that make a hotel stay a little bit nicer than usual.

We ate at a Texas Steakhouse across the street (walking distance) which also had very nice and helpful employees.

Read the reviews of this hotel and we were expecting a lot better. Most of the reviews we read said that this was one of the finest places they'd stayed in...... not sure what the previous reviewers were comparing this hotel to but we were unimpressed. There was nothing outright horrible about the hotel (except the dirty shower and showerhead that didn't appear to have been cleaned since opening day), but there was nothing particularly remarkable about the place either. I will say that the staff was very nice though.

Dear Tim,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We are pleased our hotel is consistently ranked second out of thirty-eight hotels in the Roanoke area. While the staff works hard to bring the Best Western legendary service to our guests, it sounds as though in your case, we failed. One of the ways the management and staff of the Best Western have been able to offer such a great hotel is by actullay listening to what the guests have to say. The guests tell us what they want and where improvement can be made. All of those comments and reviews are used as a learning tool to improve both product and customer service. With that said, when I say "thank you for taking the time", I sincerely mean it. I apologize for not "wowing" you. Hopefully you will return again and leave the hotel wiith the ability to post and outstanding review like so many of our other previous guests.
Sincerely,
Gary Purvis

Stopped here last night on the way to NC. Found a coupon book called Coupon Savers in VA. Got a rate of $65.00. This included hot breakfast....eggs, waffles, yogurt etc. Reasonable food. Clean room. Super nice staff. The heated pool was fabulous for the kids. Great break after a long drive. They also gave the kids rubber duckies tom play with. Best hotel and fabulous price.

Best Western Valley View - a terrific hotel and great place to start our "northern" motorcycle journey on the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway!

The "rubber ducky"in our room was the BEST!!

After an exilarating "back roads and mountains" ride across West Virginia, the Virginia Best Western Valley View offered all we needed to relax (spa & pool), wash down our bikes and have an amazing night's sleep. Our nutricious breakfast in the morning was varied & ample to get us started on our journey north along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Staff went out of their way to make our visit enjoyable.
